I walk up the stairs in the "hole", leading up to the schools main hallway with Maya right behind me.
We reach the top and stand right beside each other.
"It feels different being back" says Maya.
"It's like being a whole new person"
"Well" I say, "it feels right, doesn't it".
We make our way towards our lockers but once we reach them, dozens of people begin to crowd around us, asking all sorts of questions about our experience.
"Omg, we're you like, scared when you ran away?" asks Sarah.
"Did you meet a cute boy?" Darby asks Maya.
Lucas and Zay suddenly appear.
"Woah woah woah" says Zay, pushing through the crowd.
"Break it up, get back to your classes" Lucas says.
The crowd then breaks up.
"Finally, room to breathe" Maya says, looking relieved.
Then she turns to Lucas.
"Why hello Huckleberry! Shouldn't you be off riding your Ranger Rick horses with a banjo singing huhurrr huhurrr"
"Well, she's definite back to normal" says Lucas.
"Hey Maya, it's good to have you back" says Zay.
He steps up to hug Maya, and Maya hugs him back.
"Same for you Riley" he tells me, so I go up to hug him too.
"You're a good friend, Zay" I say, which causes him to blush.
"I really missed you Riley, and I'm so glad you're safe" says Lucas.
He then pulls me into a tight hug, and right after turns to Maya.
"Well, didn't you miss me too Huckleberry?" Maya says.
He pulls her into a tight hug.
"Of course I did" he says. "Please, don't do that again"
Maya just smiles then says, "You're a really nice guy Lucas, which is why I wish I had a smoothie right now"
I look at her and give her a knowing smile.
She returns my look with a shrug as if to say it's nothing but I continue to look at her.
Once Lucas and Zay leaves, I whisper to her.
"So, what's the ship name gonna be, huh? Laya?"
"Riley! That was nothing" she says.
I play punch her in return.
She rolls her eyes then says, "Besides, I thought you liked Lucas"
I just give her an over exaggerated shrug with a happy frown.
"What if I'm over him?" I say jokingly.
"Rileyyyyyyyyyy" she says, squinting her eyes.
"Oh, I know! Lucaya!" I say.
"Riley..."
"Uh oh"
"I'm gonna get you!" she yells as I start my run to our classroom.
She happily chases after me.
We run together, laughing as we go along.
