Part 13: Maya

I walk back to my temporary home when I hear the news that the Matthews have picked up Riley.

As I walk inside, I see Shawn putting down his phone. Once he sees me, he freezes.

"What?" I ask. He looks down from my face. I dont follow his gaze.

"Maya," he says, "I know I promised, but..." he stops.

"But what? It was a simple request! You can't let them know where I am!" I say

He shakes his head. "I just got off the phone with Katy".

Upon the mention of my mother's name, my face drops. At that point, I begin to realize that...yeah, I actually do miss her.

"She really misses you" he tells me. "You really need to go back."

I smile sadly, "But I'm not ready..."

He puts his hands on my shoulders. "You have to be strong. Whatever happens, just know that your best friend will always be there for you, and that she cared so much about you that she left her own home to try to find you."

As he says that, tears begin to fall. I smile.

"Yeah" I say, "I do miss her. And my mom" I add.

At that he smiles, then abruptly turns away.

I notice the sudden movement.

"Shawn?" I ask. "Everything ok?"

He turns back to me and shakes his head, smiling sadly. "Yeah, everything is fine."

I smile at him. "I know you care about my mom" I say.

"What?" he asks, surprised.

I smile knowingly and poke him. "If you want her, go get her" I say.

He laughs, "Really?"

I nod my head.

And I know just what to do.

We sit down on his couch and after a while, I say "Hey Shawn"

"Yeah Maya?"

"I think it would be best if you could accompany me home."

His face lights up.

"Yes Maya, I think I'd like that."

I smile and nod my head once. 

I get up and gather my things into my bag, including Riley's phone and the picture from her wallet.

I sling my bag onto my shoulder and head back out into the living space.

I see that Shawn is ready to go.

He wraps his arm around me then we walk out his front door.

Hey guys! Yeah, I'm finally gonna wrap this book up!

I think we got a few more chapters to go, but I'm so happy it's finally ending.
