We sat on top of the car, talking for a long time. But after a while we grew silent. A few minutes later, you asked me what I wanted to do most in the world, right at that moment. I thought for a minute, then replied,

"I want to slow dance with you, because I've never had a real slow dance before. When the song comes to an end, I want you to kiss me. Finally I want you to tell me why you're at the hospital".

I was afraid you would say no. Instead, you slid down, turned on the car radio, and put in a CD. Then you grabbed my hand and asked,

"May I have this dance?"

I nodded. You helped me slide down and we danced. It was three minutes of pure wonder. When the song slowed, you leaned in and kissed me. It was amazing.

We got back on the car, you wrapped your arms around me. You told me what was wrong. How you were sick, and you weren't going to make it to next year. That if you made it six months you would be lucky. You said you didn't mind, you had come to peace with it. And then you met me. You said you were thrilled you met me. You told me you thought you loved me- even if it had only been a week. And then you, less than a year away from dying, apologized to me. You said,

"I'm sorry I won't be around. That I'm going to leave you. I'm so sorry Sam".

I was crying. You were too. But I smacked you anyway.

"Don't apologize to me! Your sick, really sick, and you're apologizing? Please don't apologize".

You laughed a little.

"Only you would smack a sick man, blue eyes".

"I see no man," I teased.

You put you hand over your heart dramatically and said,

"Oh, your cruel words stab me like a knife!"

I looked at your eyes and said,

"I'm sorry".

I think you knew I wasn't talking about the joke because you said,

"Thank you".

We sat for awhile, joking and talking like we always did. But before I was ready, it was time to go.
