Now this particular sub-genre could incorporate any number of preexisting sub-genres, however it deals with something very specific: The Future.

It's reasonably clear (although that is, perhaps, a stretch) to foresee what is going to happen over the next few hundred years - to a point, anyway.

For example it's wholly likely that in that space of time there will be at least one more World War, that technology will advance to the point of being able to reinvent itself and that so-called 'reality television,' will get worse and worse and worse...

There are, of course, an inordinate amount  of other events that will almost certainly come to pass. 

However the Alternate Future sub-genre of science fiction ignores futures that are likely and instead, deals in futures that (probably) won't happen but possibly, however unlikely that possibility might be, could happen.
