A hush fell over the crowd as the king prepared to speak.
For this crime, the queen of darkness..... Shall be put to death!
The crowd gasped looking at one another in disbelief.
A small child broke from the crowd with tears welling in her eyes.
She fell to her knees looking at her king, still not believing what she had just heard.
But sire, she is my mother, what am I to do without her.
No one dare speak up before as this babe had. Her courage emanated from her, giving others strength to stand fast by her side.
The king looked out at his people, feeling their sadness, knowing their pain.
He didn't want to see the queen cease to live. He thought again of the crime she committed. She killed a man to protect a child, not even her own flesh and blood. What bothered him the most was seeing the darkness overtake her. She was uncontrollable. The king spoke again.
She will not die today. She will live her days in the Cage. Her darkness will never see the light of day again.
He knew he had to what was right for his people, not his heart. He fought off his own pain as the guards carried her off.
