Acceptance

“He must really love you.” James said as I showed off my new ring.

“I guess so” I laughed looking adoringly at it.

“Are you going to tell Jordan about it?” he asked me softly.

“Yeah, I mean he deserves to know.” I answered turning my back to James.

I picked up my phone and fired a text to my brother.

“Hey come over I have something to show you.” I typed quickly.

10 minutes later there was a loud knock and he let himself in.

“Hey.” I said awkwardly raising a hand to wave.

He noticed the ring on my finger right away. I didn’t even have to say anything about it.

“What is that?” he asked grabbing my hand to get a better look

“A ring.” I said.

“Like an engagement ring?” he asked cautiously, looking angry.

“More like a promise ring.” I said smiling.

“I’m sure Aleks is really good at keeping promises.” Jordan scoffed sarcastically.

“How would you even know Jordan? Can you please stop acting like this?” I pleaded.

“I’m trying to look out for you.” He said quietly looking almost hurt.

“Well stop it. I don’t need you! When will you get that?” I said, my voice trembling.

“I see.” He said, taking a step back.

“I just wish you saw what I see in him.” I said stepping towards him.

“He loves you, doesn’t he?” He said, realizing he wasn’t stopping me.

“Yeah, and I love him too.” I said taking my brothers hand.

“Then I guess there’s no stopping you guys, huh?” he smiled and for the first time in a long time he truly resembled my father.

I just smiled, my bottom lip trembling. I wanted to cry, but because I was happy for once.

“You have my blessing.” He said smiling, wrapping me up in a bear hug.

I felt like we were five again, and we were as close as two people could be. Maybe we both still loved each other after all.
