Chapter 40

“Mom?” Danielle called out.

“Yes dear?”

“Can I ask you something?”

Danielle sat down on the bed next to her mother who was reading a book.

“Ask about what?”

Danielle paused for a moment before asking. “About the baby.”

Mrs. Roberts put her book down.

“Why do you want to ask about the baby?”

“It’s like this,” Danielle said, slowly. “I’ve been thinking a lot while my head doesn’t hurts. And I distinctly remember that we don’t have neighbors that have little children.”

Danielle paused before continuing.

“Next to us is an old couple who doesn’t have a grandchild or a little baby and on the other side of our house are bachelors which of course don’t have any children yet. And I don’t think there are any couples that live in this neighborhood that has a baby or works in London.”

“What are you trying to say Danielle?” Mrs. Roberts said, trying to hide her worries about Danielle finding out. “There is a new couple that has moved in here not so far away from our house. Maybe you don’t remember them because they have just moved in.”

Suddenly, Danielle started to cry.

“Danielle darling what's wrong?” Mrs. Roberts asked, taking off her reading spectacles.

“I have this, feeling, inside my heart telling me that there is a big part of my life that I couldn't remember.”

Danielle paused for a moment and sniffed. Tears were falling down her cheek like rain.

“I also have this feeling of missing someone but I don’t know who. And I have this strange feeling about this baby.”

“What strange feeling?”

“I feel like, this baby,” Danielle pointed at the baby who was sleeping next to Mrs. Roberts. “Is mine.”

“What do you mean yours? This is our neighbor’s baby.” Mrs. Roberts frowned.

“Mom, be honest to me, please.” Danielle pleaded. “I have after labor signs on me, like, I’ve been craving for sour foods, my back hurts like crazy,” Danielle paused to think. “And my period is way too much, like as if I have just gave birth to someone.”

Mrs. Roberts remained silent, not knowing what to say.

“Please, mom, is this my baby?”

“Are you listening to yourself?” Mrs. Roberts asked. “You sound crazy. You don’t even have a boyfriend, how on earth could you have a baby?”

Danielle took out the picture of her and Greyson and showed it to her mother.

“Is this my boyfriend?” Danielle raised my eyebrow.

Mrs. Roberts took a deep breath.

“Look, it’s not that I don’t want to tell you.” She said, looking guilty. “The doctor said not to pressure you. And I don’t want to stress you out.”

Mrs. Roberts took a deep breath again, swallowing hard.

“This is your baby, and he is your boyfriend.” She said, slowly. “I thought that if I told you this, you would have a brain attack or something because of the shock.”

Danielle looked at her baby.

Suddenly, she ran beside him and picked him up. She kissed him over and over, crying ever so softly.

“I knew you were mine…” Danielle cried. “I knew I’m your mother.”

The baby started to cry, startled by all the commotion.

Danielle hugged him and cried.

Suddenly, Danielle collapsed on the bed.

“Danielle?!” Mrs. Roberts cried out. “Oh my, I shouldn't have told you that. This is all my fault.”

Danielle has blacked out on the bed next to her baby. The baby was crying so loudly making Mrs. Roberts head spin.

Mrs. Roberts picked up the baby and put him in his crib and went back to Danielle.

She took a piece of clean cloth and wetted it with water before wiping it all over her face.

Mrs. Roberts sighed.

Why is this happening to you my child? Mrs. Roberts sighed again.
