And just a year since war was ceased
By mother's words that cried for peace
The king in sickness layeth down
And passed by law his son the crown.

And Pedro rose his wife he took
Who long since life had well forsook
A box on marbled stone he laid
The woman heart of king had gave.

Beside his throne inside his court
Where will of son a father thwart
He laid the box and bayed them all
He counted chief among his thralls

To come and homage pay to Queen
That since her death the man had deemed
The lady over all the land
That sat below his sovereign hand.

And many came to scrape and bow
Before his Ines lowly cowed
As though a living queen she sat
And beauty still her form begat...
