Too young for war

4 years later

"elena?" I hear a soft voice say from the door. I open my eyes slowly to see Ella looking at me with a smile on her face. "it's time to wake up, Aaron is making us breakfast"

I groan and put my pillow over my face. Someone then walks up the stairs.

"you should have learned by now, Love, that she won't wake up that easily" I hear Aaron say to her.

And then, suddenly the light are on, the curtains has been opened and my duvet is taken away and put at the end of my bed.

"That was not necessary Aaron, I was already awake." I tell him irritated, and removes the pillow from my face.

"we have some things we want to talk to you about, so get dressed and come down stairs." He tells me and they both leave.

I groan as I get up from my bed and walk to my closet.

we now live in a house, and not at sector 45. The house is new, and very beautiful! My favourite part is the garden though- where it's a small stream and flowers all over the grass, I love it.

The house is yellow, but Aaron wants it to be painted another colour. I like it though, but sadly I can't change his opinion and make him keep it as it is now. He is so stubborn sometimes.

I get dressed, summers here so I put on a white summer dress, jewelry, and take out the socks I use to curl my hair, and It works perfect!

going down stairs I smell toast!

Ella is standing with Aaron in the kitchen, but looks up as I walk down to them.

"I love that dress on you elena, you look great!" Ella says smiling knowing she gave it to me.

I smile, "thank you! at least you are nice in the mornings" I tell her knowing Aaron is there as well.

He rolls his eyes as he puts my toast on a plate. "Eat." He tells me then and puts a carton of orange juice in front of me.

I lay my head on the table still tired, Almost falling asleep again.

"Hey" Ella says touching my shoulder, "we wanted to talk to you about something."

"What" I huff as I'm still laying with my head down.

"remember we brought up school?" And as I hear her say that, I'm up.

"no way, you know my answer, I will not go to a public school." I tell them fast.

"James will be there, and it will be a big opportunity" Ella says.

Aaron keeps quiet because he knows why I won't go.

I talked to him about it not so long ago, but I don't think Ella knows. I don't have a problem telling her, but I can't tell her.. it's embarrassing..

"I will not go, end of discussion." I tell them, walking away, and going to my room.

.....

Later that day, maybe an hour after the talk with Ella and Aaron I hear my door open.

"heyy little sister, ready to go?" James says.

"go where?" I ask confused.

"We're buying ice cream!" He smiles and leaves.

I walk fast after him to catch up.

"why?"

"it's summer, and I need to eat something cold!" He says, "plus, you haven't been much out of the house."

It's true, I haven't done much lately, I was sick just some days ago, then I was with Kenji and nazeera and we watched some movies kenji wanted me to see. After that I have been sleeping over at James and Adam, which was fun, because Adam wasn't home most of the time, so we could do whatever we wanted.

Other than that, I've been with either Ella or Aaron, or both.

we go down the street, and as I'm on my way to cross the street, I'm pulled back not so gently.

A car passes and honks.

"oh my god Elena, are you crazy??" James says staring into my soul in full panic.

"You need to look where you're going, can't just go over a road like that."

Shivers go down my spine.

I look down. "Sorry—" I tell him with an apologetic smile.

He lets out a small breath, and we walk over as there are no cars to be seen.

James is two years older than me, so he's 15, Turing 16 in not so long! Which also means we wouldn't go to the same classes if I were to go to school.

It's been 4 years since the war and everything, and since then houses have been build, shops, farms, hospitals, cars, and of course school...

I have always been learning by reading at sector 45, why can't I do that now too?

James has been going to school for 2 years already, but he went to a school 1 hour away from here, now a school has opened here too, and his class is moved here, and I have gotten the opportunity to go.

"You are never this quiet Elena, what's on your mind?" James asks, bringing me out if my thoughts.

I look at him, and let out a small breath.

"It's just that Aaron and Ella wants me to go to public school! Aaron isn't pushing me, he just tells me I should try." I tell him. "But Ella wants me to go, she says it will be a great opportunity and that I will learn a lot and make friends."

"And what's the problem with that?" James asks.

"the problem is that I don't want to make friends.."

"Or are you afraid?"

"I am not afraid James, I am capable of making friends whenever I want."

"You sound just like your brother."

"Our brother you mean."

"Yeah, sorry, but you get my point." He says, "and I'm not sure the thought has hit you yet, but Juliette is most likely pushing you because she never got the chance to go to school and make friends herself. + the only friend you have is me."

"I have kenji, naze—"

"friends your age Elena."

I roll my eyes and don't say anything.

"You don't want to go to school because you are scared." He says.

"No, I'm not scared James."

"I know you don't like big crowds with people you don't know. you always go another way if the town is full of people."

I have nothing to say on that.

We're both quiet the rest of the walk, we eat ice cream on our way home, and my mind is full of thoughts.

I really don't want to go to public school..

It has been such a long time since I have written on this story, so I don't know if the characters act different (in a bad way) for you readers 😭 but I hope you like it!
