Chapter 19

He didn’t know how much longer he could take it.  It had been what, days?  Hours?  He’d been in his wolf form for so long he didn’t know what day it was anymore.  Time ceased to exist while Jason remained in his canine state.

The afternoon that he fled Dava’s backyard seemed so long ago.  He’d searched, hunted for her but to no avail.  Several times he had crossed paths with the Alpha and somehow knew that he was searching for her too.

But neither of them spoke.  He was going his way and the Alpha was going his.

Jason ran at full speed through the familiar trails of the forest. He jumped over logs, side stepped trees and leaped over winding creeks.  He knew that time was of the essence and the more time that passed the less chance that he would be able to find her untouched.

He couldn’t forget how possessive Adam had acted in the parking lot when he approached Dava.  Jason had told Adam the day before that he had planned on making Dava his mate but Adam didn’t listen.  He was just like every other Alpha wolf out there, wanting something that he shouldn’t have.

He knew good and damn well that the Pack would never accept Dava as an Alpha’s female.  Why would he even consider putting her through that?

Adam wasn’t stupid.  He was letting his carnal desires rule his thinking.  In the end the only person that was going to end up hurt was Dava.   He should have just left her alone and then none of this would have happened in the first place.

Jason had a plan.  This was going to be the year.  He planned to woo her, make her want him as much as he wanted her before he asked her that ever important question- to accept him as her mate.

He’d watched her every day the year before.  He saw her shyness and thought it was endearing.  He saw her intelligence and admired it.  He saw her soft heart and craved it.

And now- now she was gone.  No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t find her.

He refused to give up though.  She had to be here somewhere.  From what he heard of the accident, she had been injured badly.  Adam couldn’t have gone too far with her if she needed medical assistance.

Coming to an abrupt halt at the creek, Jason’s wolf took in his surroundings.  He needed to get his bearings and think about where he was going to look next.

Lifting his head in the air, his senses went on full alert.

He could hear the woodpecker pecking in the tree above him. He sensed the young, terror stricken doe across the creek watching him. He could hear the wing beats of the bee that huddled over a dandelion to his left.

Jason turned his head and the light breeze blew gently against his snout.

There he picked up on something else.

Something odd and out of place.  Something that one wouldn’t usually find this deep in the woods.

Blood.

He scented the fresh blood and froze, honing in on that peculiar scent.

He drew in a deep breath and catalogued the unique smell.  It wasn’t just any type of animal blood, he realized- it was the blood of a wolf.

His heart rate escalated.  This could be the clue he’d been looking for.  Turning around, he darted off in the direction that the scent was coming from.
