Alec Lightwood is a cop for the NYPD. He comes from a long line of cops in the family. He loves his job. He loves following the law. 

One day he brings in a con man that his father had been hunting down for years, only to discover how inhumanly beautiful he is. The con man, Magnus Bane, is forced to work with Alec in order to either get his sentence shortened or avoid jail altogether. He tries his best to get on Alec's nerves, and Alec can't take his mind off this criminal, no matter how hard he tries. Magnus gets under his skin like no other person has ever done before. 

Over time, Magnus opens his eyes to the world around him and Alec soon realizes that sometimes you have to break the law in order to follow it.

"I know, I know," Ragnor said, holding up a hand. "Just hear me out. He's transferred from Los Angeles and nearly got himself fired. His father's an old friend of mine - Capt. Lightwood.
