"The law is hard but it is the law"

Alec Lightwood is a cop for the NYPD. He comes from a long line of cops in the family. He loves his job. He loves following the law.

One day he brings in a con man that his father had been hunting down for years, only to discover how inhumanly beautiful he is. The con man, Magnus Bane, is forced to work with Alec in order to either get his sentence shortened or avoid jail altogether. He tries his best to get on Alec's nerves, and Alec can't take his mind off this criminal, no matter how hard he tries. Magnus gets under his skin like no other person has ever done before.

Over time, Magnus opens his eyes to the world around him and Alec soon realizes that sometimes you have to break the law in order to follow it.

Magnus narrowed his eyes. "You're using your concerned voice, which I hate." "You're getting a partner." Magnus sat up straight. "What the fuck, Ragnor?" "I know, I know," Ragnor said, holding up a hand. "Just hear me out. He's transferred from Los Angeles and nearly got himself fired. His father's an old friend of mine - Capt. Lightwood. I've known the kid since he was in diapers. He's a good cop. Smart. Passionate. But... a bit of a loose cannon. Kind of like someone else I know, back when they used to wear more eyeliner than sense." *** The first week had been... rough. They were both stubborn, with completely different work ethics, which had left its mark on their first days together. On top of that, Magnus was still upset about having cut his vacation short. They started with easy jobs - like the occasional drunk who thought urinating in a public fountain was a protest against capitalism. Magnus breezed through the days with detours into half the bars and cafés in the borough, calling them "informant check-ins." Alec called them "wasting police resources" under his breath. The second week was a tiny bit better. By the third week, they even laughed. (Sequel to Project Revenge) "You asked me to run away with you once, do you remember?" A conversation plays in my mind like a song. Slow and distant. "Yeah," he sighs wistfully "i remember." He looks at me up through his long, blonde lashes from where he's perched on edge of his mothers corner sofa like he shouldn't be looking at me at all. Like somehow he's sinning. "Do you ever wonder what our lives would be like if we'd actually gone through with it?" A question i had asked myself every single day for eight years. I watch it register across his face. "I did. It used to be all i thought about." He admits and rises from his seat to busy himself with straightening out the picture frames on the side table. His long, tan fingers lingering on some more than others. "What's changed?" His back tences as i ask and he turns to me attempting to straighten out his disheveled shirt and tie "Everythings changed Clary. I'm getting married in the morning." °°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°°° Time changes everything, even love. Clary Fray had convinced herself that, despite everything, she was over Jace Herondale. She no longer thought about his lazy smirk and care free attitude, his bright gold eyes that could put the sun to shame or even the way those eyes had looked at her once the way mankind gazed apon the night sky. Or so she thought until she recieved an invitation to his wedding and the years melted away.
