Many years have passed since the war between Eluria and Rurdinia ended, yet the peoples of both countries still refuse to see one another as anything but latent enemies. Rurdinians have always seen any kind of reliance on magic as a crutch, even as places like Eluria continue to prize those same traits in their people. An unexpected encounter leads Zuriñe, an Elurian girl, to be adopted into a wary Rurdinian family. Instead of using the Elurian girl's presence as a way to grow and heal some of the old prejudices left behind after the war, Zuriñe grows up surrounded by people who refuse to see her as anything but a threat and a nuisance. Years of relentless negative comments about her heritage only reinforce the idea that she is nothing but a black sheep in her perfect Rurdinian family. Then, one fateful summer day, Zuriñe receives a tantalizing bit of gossip about her malicious uncle's ghost of a son that pulls her away from home and down the road of self-discovery. With the help of her half Elurian mentor, Zuriñe finally begins to see her magic as something good, even as it leads her away from her home and eventually into the company of a man she grew up despising.
