The Pythagorean Cup of Justice The Pythagorean Cup, also known as the Greedy Cup, is a drinking cup designed in ancient Greece by the mathematician and philosopher Pythagoras. The cup is designed so that if it is filled over a certain amount, the liquid will overflow through a small hole in the bottom. This ingenious design was meant to prevent one from over-indulging in wine or other beverages. Pythagoras is believed to have invented the Pythagorean cup because he wanted to find a way to avoid overindulgence and maintain temperance. The cup was designed to prevent a person from drinking too much wine. The cup was made from a hollow, two-handled vessel with a plug in the bottom. When the cup was filled with wine, the plug would be removed and the wine allowed to pour out until the drinker's desired level of intoxication was reached. When the plug was put back in place, any further drinking was prevented.
