They're supposed to stay confined to the background, like the good little human-shaped white noise makers they are. Well, for whatever reason, it's middle-sister Mary Bennet's time to shine. In this version of the story, she has massive sway over the events within. Not that she's trying to influence the main plot (although she has had it with all the sitting), but when an accidental spill turns things on their head, she decides to go with the flow.
