This plays out in season 2-3 after Lucy was kidnapped by Caleb. Lucy has been struggling a lot with mental health since the kidnapping, and has nightmares all the time. She often has panic attacks as well, especially after a long day at work. No one knows that Lucy's struggling. She's to scared that she'll get judged if she tells anyone so she just keeps it too herself. But when the nightmares starts to get worse and her panic attacks come more frequently which drains her. Their shared background helped them advance quickly, and during their rookie year they began dating-marrying just two years later. By 2009, Tim had earned his promotion to Training Officer while Natalie was tapped for Detective, fast-tracked into Narcotics, and partnered with her Academy friend, Isabel Blake. But by 2019, everything had changed. Isabel's struggle with addiction began in 2016, and Nat had gone deep undercover in a cartel ring-six months in when a new wave of rookies joined the LAPD.
