deep in the quiet night
telephone rang .. loud
we were awakened
venecia's guy .. Mario was in
she got up .. quickly dressed
even though it snowed all nite
she'd rush to go pick him up
two hundred and fifty miles away
In northern colorado .. denver
related she'd be back in ten hours
mountain driving is treacherous
especially in deep snow
ice .. black ice everywhere
viola and I laid back down
fell asleep .. an hour later
a loud truck horn blared
I jumped up to my feet
looked out of a frosted window
rather strange .. the noise was
for we'd only one close neighbor
in the snow covered foothills
of the great rocky mountains
three drunk .. wasted rednecks
were ranting .. cursing up a storm
brandishing pistols in headbeams
it took me a few minutes
to realize the rednecks
had to be looking for viola
then I thought .. oh great
standing .. my back to the wall
first chance I got
crawled through the house
out the wide back door
came walking around the front
shot the headlights out of the truck
the truck's partially missing grille
looked like a jagged tooth monster
i'd also shot up the body and windshield
the three drunk rednecks jumped in the truck
spinning gravel .. breaking the house windows
