season 7 episode 18

Calliope Iphegenia Torres was one of the few people in the hospital to not stare at Holly as some type of sad widow. Instead, she offered Holly donuts and let her in on all of her crazy surgeries for a whole month. Calliope Iphegenia Torres cared deeply for the red haired girl and took it as a responsibility to mother her from a distance.

"What the hell happened?" Mark asked, jogging up to the group of surgeons waiting outside of the hospital for Callie's ambulance.

Holly spared a look at Derek before sighing, "Car versus truck." She shook her head, "It's all we know." She muttered to herself, "What is it with people in this hospital that I care about getting into vehicle crashes?"

"And her injuries?" Mark questioned, glancing at Derek and Holly for answers, "What-- the baby?"

"We don't know yet." Derek responded, looking out to see how far the ambulance was.

"Well," Mark turned at the two, "why the-- why the hell don't you know? Someone get me a trauma gown."

"Mark," Dr. Webber spoke up and shook his head as an intern ran off to get him a gown, "you need to sit this one out."

"I'm not sitting this one out." Mark defended, "That's Callie. That's my kid."

"Which is why you can't." Webber explained, "I'm sorry. You can't be a doctor on this one."

"Screw you." Mark scoffed.

"Sloan." Owen warned.

"Screw all of you." Mark shook his head, putting on the trauma gown.

"Look at me, Sloan." Webber walked up to him and placed two hands on his shoulders, "Look at me." Mark, who was trying to avoid his gaze, looked up, "Maybe I don't understand what you two have, how you have it, but I understand this, she is your family. Callie Torres and that baby are your family, and the best way that you can help your family is to step back and let the rest of us do what you can't rationally do-- save their lives. Okay?"

Derek glanced over at him, "Mark."

Mark sighed, "I'm in the room, you hear me?"

"Okay." Webber nodded.

"I'm in the room." Mark affirmed with a strong voice, wanting it clear that he wasn't leaving Callie's side.

"Okay." The ambulance pulled up and Webber nodded at Owen, "Hunt, you're in charge."

The doctors ran forward as Owen led the group, "All right, everyone. Multiple blunt trauma protocol. Let's go."

"Tachycardic and hypotensive en route." Arizona informed as she got out of the ambulance, obvious head and chest injuries." She backed away, accidentally bumping into Owen as he walked up to Callie, who was lying down on the gurney.

"Callie?" He asked the unconscious patient, "Callie?" Callie slowly opened her eyes as her gurney was put on the group, "We got you, you hear me? Everything is gonna be okay."

"She's hemorrhaging." Meredith noted.

"Wait." Teddy advised as Derek and Holly went over to check on her pupils, "Hold on. Is that blood coming from her chest?"

"What?" Bailey asked, looking over.

Callie muttered something to Bailey as Holly and Derek shared a look before wheeling her inside.

Needing to rush Callie into surgery, the doctors wheeled her gurney from the trauma room to the elevator as Callie saw herself singing.

"Too many people." Webber shook his head at the amount of people in the elevator, "Get out."

Knowing she'd need to take the staircase, Jackson was ready to switch out of the elevator with Holly, "Holl."

Holly turned around and shook her head at him, "I'm good."

He sighed shortly, his eyes following her as she ran to go to the staircase.

Holly looked at the scans in the O.R., "C.T. shows a large epidural and subdural."

"I need to get in there." Derek nodded at the anesthesiologist, "Is she under?"

Knox nodded, "We're ready for you."

"All right." Derek looked at the scrub nurse, "I'm going in. I need a 10-blade. Bipolar to Dr. Kepner."

"Bovie." Bailey nodded at a scrub nurse as Lexie sat down next to Callie.

"Wait." Lexie spoke up upon seeing Callie's eyes flicker and her frown her eyebrows, "Wait. Stop. Her anesthesia's too light."

"Oh, I can fix that." Knox got up from his chair and adjusted the anesthesia.

Holly's eyes widened, "Oh, my God."

"Damn it, Knox." Derek sighed.

"We're on the run here." Knox defended.

"People." Webber spoke in an authoritative voice, getting their attention.

"Take a breath, everybody." Owen advised, "I mean it. Stop what you're doing and every one of you take a breath and center yourself. There's no room for rushing here. We rush, we make a mistake, so, everybody... take a breath."

The group of doctors collectively took a breath, all praying and hoping that Callie and the baby would survive.

"Hey." Lexie leaned forward and nodded at Callie, "Just breathe. Callie, relax. We've got this. It's under control. Just breathe." Somehow, possibly with the medication, Callie was able to hear Lexie begin to sing, "Two A.M., and she calls me 'cause I'm still awake, 'Can you help me unravel my latest mistake? I don't love him. Winter just wasn't my season.'"

Looking up at the gallery and noticing only Arizona there, Derek sighed, "Someone needs to keep an eye on Mark." He looked at Holly, hoping she would do it.

Holly, who hadn't looked up to see his eyes on her, nodded before she looked up and noticed him staring at her, "What? Me? No, I'm staying for Callie."

"Little Grey." Richard suggested, making Lexie stand, "Eyes on Sloan."

Lexie nodded and walked out of the room, noticing Jackson's eyes on her.

Helping April monitor Callie, Holly looked out to see Mark and Arizona fighting louder.

"Well," Arizona refuted, "we all want her to live, but what's her life gonna be like if she wakes up and her child is gone?"

Mark scoffed, "What's her life gonna be like if she's dead?"

"Oh, God." Arizona shook her head, "It's not that simple."

"It is." Mark defended, "I don't like it."

"Wait." Bailey sung, raising a hand.

"It's horrible," Mark continued, "but it's that simple."

"Wait for the dawn..."

"We can have another baby." Mark reasoned, "We can't have another Callie."

"Oh," Arizona nodded with a tight smile, "so you're just gonna screw my girlfriend again?"

"...my dear..."

"Oh, for God sakes." Mark groaned, "Get over it. We screwed."

"...wait till the sun gets here..."

"It is Mark." Arizona glared, "It is a big deal."

"...and you will wait too long..."

"Big deal." Mark scoffed again, "Well, if that's what it takes to make another child-- my child-- we'll screw again."

"...he will be gone..."

"No, you won't." Arizona shook her head as Bailey walked inside slowly.

"Yes, we will."

"You are out of your mind."

Bailey frowned her eyebrows at the two arguing as she shut the door, "Wait. Wait till the sun shines through, wait till the sky is blue," Bailey walked over to Callie's side and placed an arm on her shoulder, "And you will wait too long, he will be gone. He will be gone."

Mark and Arizona continued to yell in the background as Bailey, Holly, and April hummed along, "Ooh... he will be gone. Ooh, ooh, ooh, he will be gone."

Jackson leaned against the Nurse's station in front of Callie's room, ignoring the verbal fight between Arizona and Mark escalating as he thought back to his argument with Lexie. He felt like a hypocrite, having judged Lexie for continuing to harbor feelings towards Mark and yet he continued to care for Holly more than a friend. He sighed, looking down at the desk as he thought of how to set it right with his girlfriend.

"Ooh..." April, Holly, and Bailey sang in unison, all looking at Callie, "He will be gone. Ooh, ooh, ooh. He will be gone."

Holly held Callie's hand as Bailey replaced the bandages on Callie. Remembering the donuts and surgeries, Holly glanced over at Arizona and Mark-- mentally reminding herself to check on them like Callie checked on her.

Slowly, her eyes trailed off to a figure by the Nurse's station. She sang softly as she thought about her and Jackson, "Wait till you doubt no more, wait till you know you're sure, and you will wait too long..." Seeing him begin to look up, Holly averted her eyes quickly as she glanced back at Callie, remembering his relationship with Lexie, "...he will be gone."

"She's gonna wake up." Holly assured, sitting next to Mark as she offered him a donut. Mark exhaled, stressful hands rubbing against each other as he mentally contemplating eating it-- he was still cooling off from the heated argument, "She's the type to fight--"

"Was George?" Mark countered, harsh eyes leaving the donut to land on hers.

Holly cleared her throat, "He was hit by a bus. Callie was in a car accident." She frowned her eyebrows, looking back at him, "I know you're upset--"

"Upset?" Mark scoffed, getting up as he began to pace around the room, "I'm not upset-- upset doesn't begin to cover it. I'm furious!" Mark yelled, throwing a glass vase to the wall.

Holly's eyes widened as she whispered, "Okay." She wanted to leave the room, but reminded herself of the arguments she would sometimes have with Callie and sighed before sitting back down. Passing a glass cup to Mark, she asked, "Want to throw this to the wall, too?"

Mark looked at the glass shards on the floor before grabbing the cup from Holly's hand. His breathing paced as he stared at the cup in anger, aiming to throw it on the wall until something in him stopped himself, "...No."

"Mm." Holly hummed, "Do you want to talk about--" She stopped, looking down at her pager before looking at Mark with wide eyes, "It's Callie."

"Slowly push the heparin." Teddy nodded at a nurse as Holly kept her eyes one the I.V. in Callie.

The second she saw blood, Holly announced, "We've got blood!"

"Damn it." Derek sighed, getting up quickly with Holly as they rushed over to Callie, "We gotta go back in."

"It's the heparin." Cristina reasoned, "Dr. Altman, we can still do the percutaneous repair. It'll work. I know it will."

"Dr. Yang," Teddy reminded, "the decision's already made."

"Get me more lap pads." Bailey told a scrub nurse, "Got a lot of bleeding down here."

"The baby's having decels." Addison informed the group of surgeons, having come in to help save Callie's baby after Lucy didn't know what to do.

"This is not working." Owen sighed, nodding at Cristina, "Yang is right. We need to reverse the heparin and try the percutaneous repair."

"What?" Teddy shook her head, "No."

"Get me a percutaneous catheter kit." Cristina yelled out, rushing over to Callie's bottom half to start the procedure.

"I can do this." Teddy assured, "I just need-- damn it."

"Flip on the echo." Cristina announced, "I am going up through the groin."

"No." Teddy denied, "I said I've got this."

"Dr. Altman," Owen instructed Teddy as Cristina asked for Jackson's help, "stabilize the heart and step back."

"No," Teddy continued, "I can get it. I just need to-- damn it."

"Dr. Altman." Webber tried to get her attention but she continued to work as she shook her head at the man, "Dr. Altman." Webber spoke in his strong voice, making her look up, "Dr. Altman, Step away."

The surgeons in the room grew awkward at the confrontation as Teddy stared at the Chief before throwing her surgical instruments down on the tray and stepped away.

"You can do this. One step at a time." Owen assured.

Cristina nodded back at him, "One step at a time."

"Step one you say we need to talk," Owen sang, "He walks, you say sit down it's just a talk. He smiles politely back at you, you stare politely right on through."

"Removing the needle over the guide wire." Cristina announces as she does so, "Catheter."

"Some sort of window to your right." Meredith sings, assisting Dr. Bailey.

"Forceps. Suction to Dr. Kepner." Derek nods at a nurse.

"As he goes left, and you stay right. Between the lines of fear and blame, you begin to wonder why you came."

"It's going in easy." Cristina smiled, "Get the T.E.E. ready."

"Where did I go wrong?" Teddy joined Meredith in singing, "I lost a friend."

"Somewhere along in the bitterness." Holly sang along as she glanced at Jackson briefly, "And I would have stayed up, with you all night, had I known..."

"How to save a life." Teddy finished.

Leaning against the Nurse's station, Holly watched Arizona hold Callie's hand as she felt a few tears trickle down cheeks-- the encounter with Mark reminded her of George.

"You okay?" Jackson asked, walking up to Holly with a granola bar outstretched towards her.

"Yeah." Holly smiled with a sniffle, grabbing the granola bar from his hand before she unwrapped it and took a bite, "I just hope Callie is, too." She nodded at him, "Thanks."

"Yeah," Jackson nodded, looking back at Callie, "me, too."

"So," Holly cleared her throat, remembering Lexie saying something about a small argument, "h-how are you and, uh, Lexie?"

"Oh." Jackson nodded, having come out of the resident's lounge after making up with her-- telling her he wasn't the type of guy to wait around for a girl who's in love with someone else and Lexie assured she wasn't, "We're good."

"Good." Holly nodded, biting into her granola bar again, "Good."
