"Y/n! Wait up!" I heard someone call.
I turned around to see my friend.
"What?"
"Are you free tonight?"
"Yeah, why?"
He showed me an invititation he got.
"I can bring a plus one!"
"I don't know, Shawn."
"Please?"
"Only if you don't leave me."
"I won't, promise."
"Fine. What time is it?"
"Starts at eight, so I'll pick you up around seven thirty."
I nodded.
"Thank you." he smiled, hugging me.
"Yeah, yeah." I laughed.
"Okay, I have to go meet up with Madelyn, so I'll see you tonight."
"Okay, tell her I said hi."
"Will do. Thanks again." he smiled, walking away.
I turned around, continuing to walk home.
Guess I'm going to a party tonight when I'd rather be at home.
Once I got home, I had my regular after school snack-a peanut butter and jelly sandwhich, and walked up to my room, continuing to watch a show I started yesterday.
Once it was around five, I decided to do some homework so I wouldn't have to worry about it later.
When I finished half of the things I needed to do, I saw it was already six fifty and knew Shawn would be over in fifteen minutes.
I've never been to one of these high school parties cause dumb drunk people annoy me, so I didn't know what to neccesarily wear. I grabbed a dress shirt and my leggings to play it safe.
Once I finished getting ready, I heard the doorbell ring.
I walked downstairs to see Shawn talking to my mom.
"Yeah, you should come over for dinner sometime. And bring your family with you!" my mom smiled.
"Of course! I'll tell my mom to call you when she has time so you guys can arrange something together."
"Hey, Shawn." I said.
He smiled at me.
"Be careful, okay, y/n? And have fun."
I smiled and nodded.
"Come home before midnight!" my mom called to me before I got into his car.
"I know, mom!"
Shawn drove away and said, "You're gonna have fun, I promise."
"Um, yeah, sure."
He grabbed my hand, giving me a reassuring squeeze.
He started driving into the driveway of a mansion, but there wasn't any music blaring.
"Are you sure we're in the right place?"
"Yeah. Why?" he asked, taking off his seatbelt.
"I thought youu were invited to a party?"
"Yeah?"
He stared at me for a bit until he realized what I was thinking of a party.
"Ohhhh, you thought I was taking you to a high school party. No," he laughed. "I was invited to a formal gathering."
"Oh." I said. "That's a relief."
"Yeah, now let's go."
I helped him take some cakes he brought with him from the car.
He knocked on the door and gave me a smile.
"Ah, Shawn! It's so nice to see you again! Your mom is already in the back. Thank you for bringing cakes, you can put them on the counter in the kitchen." the lady smiled.
"Oh, who's this?" she smiled, looking at me.
"This is my best friend, y/n. Y/n, this is my mom's friend, Mrs. Jamie."
"Hello, it's nice to meet you." I smiled.
"Nice to meet you too, sweetie. Im glad you could come." she smiled, inviting us into her house.
I followed behind Shawn into the kitchen.
"Woah, her house is huge."
"Yeah, I haven't been here for a while."
I placed the cake on the counter and Shawn said, "Let's go out. I think everyone is out there."
I nodded.
When we reached their backyard, I saw a bunch of people standing around and talking.
I saw a boy who looked to be about our age.
"Who's that?" I ask, motioning to the boy.
"That's Zach. We used to bros. I haven't seen him in a while."
"He's gorgeous." I smiled.
"Shush." Shawn said, rolling his eyes.
"No, like, he's so pretty."
"Then go talk to him." he said, pushing me towards Zach, causing me to bump into him.
"Sorry!" I said.
"Woah, are you okay?"
"Yeah, I'm okay. Sorry, I didn't mean to bump into you."
"No, you're good. I'm Zach."
"Y/n." I smiled.
"I've never seen you before. Are you from around here?"
"Yeah, I go to the local high school."
"Oh cool."
"I've never seen you at school?"
"Yeah, I actually am at the university that's a few minutes away."
"Ah, cool. Are you a freshmen?"
"Nope, I'm a sophomore. What grade are you in?"
"I'm a senior." I said.
"Aw, cool. Last year, enjoy it."
"Eh, I'm just waiting to graduate." I laugh.
"That was me too." he smiled.
I stared at him, smiling in awe.
"You're really cute." I blushed.
"Really? Thanks. You're really pretty."
I smiled, looking at the ground.
"Would you maybe, I don't know, want to go out sometime?"
"Yeah, I'd love too."
"Great. Can I have your number?"
I nodded, typing my number into his phone.
"I'll call you tomorrow."
I smiled.
"Okay, everyone! Dinner is going to be ready in five minutes, so you can start coming in!"
"Come on." he smiled, holding out his hand for me.
I grabbed his hand, intertwining our fingers.
As we were walking inside, I began looking for Shawn.
"Are you looking for someone?" Zach asked.
"Oh, um, no. I'm going to go use the restroom real quick. Save me a spot." I smiled, walking to find the bathroom.
I saw a lady walking in the halls and asked, "Excuse me, do you know where the bathroom is?"
"Yes, if you just go straight and turn left, it should be on your right."
"Okay, thank you, ma'am."
She nodded, continuing to clean.
When I opened the door, I felt my heart drop to my stomach.
"Shawn?"
He quickly pushed himself off a girl and said, "oh, hey, y/n. How did it go with Zach?"
I shrugged, walking away.
"Wait, y/n, are you okay?"
"Yes, Shawn. I'm fine."
I don't know why, but it bothered me to see Shawn kissing another girl.
I quickly returned to the dining room, not needing to use the restroom anymore, sitting down next to Zach.
"You alright?"
I nodded.
Everyone was beginning to sit down, and I saw Shawn and the girl sitting down.
I felt my hands shaking in my lap.
"Hey, are you okay?" Zach whispered, holding my hand.
I squeezed his hand lightly, nodding.
My head felt as if it was spinning.
Why do I feel this way? Shawn's my best friend. Maybe I'm just worried he would get hurt by her?
I brushed the feeling off and held onto Zach's hand tighter.
Within a few seconds, the room was packe with people and I began to feel light headed.
"Hey, hey, breathe." Zach, said, noticing my shallow breathing.
He stood up quickly, saying, "y/n and I will be right back. Feel free to start without us."
I felt him picking me up, rushing to take me outside.
"Okay, take deep breaths for me. You're okay. Breathe."
I began crying and I felt Zach wrap his arms around me.
He didn't say anything, he just held me in his arms.
"I'm here for you. You're gonna be okay." he whispered.
"I'm sorry." I managed to choke out.
"Don't apologize. Just breathe for me."
"You're so nice too." I cried.
I felt him rubbing my back.
I pulled away from him and stared into his eyes.
"Do you want to talk about what's upsetting you?"
"I don't want to hurt your feelings."
"Just tell me."
"You're so nice, Zach, and I know I don't know much about you, but I-I like someone else."
"Oh, okay. Thank you for being honest." he said, letting go of my hand.
"I'm sorry."
He shrugged. "Don't worry about it. You can't do anything about it."
"Make me like you. I want to like you. I don't want to like him, Zach." I cried.
"Hey, hey, don't cry. I can't make you like me. If you like him, go for it. I respect you and I don't want you to force your feelings for me."
"Why are you so nice? Why are you still here?"
"Because I'm not leaving you like this."
I sat down on the porch, Zach sitting down next to me.
"I want to like you."
He wrapped his arm around me.
"Who knows, if we hang out more, maybe I can get you to be mine."
"I hope so."
"Who's this guy you like anyways?"
"Shawn."
"Oh. He's in there, isn't he?"
"Yeah, and he's with a girl."
"What's your guys' relationship?"
"I'm guessing he just thinks of me as a friend since he's with her.
"Did he come with her?"
"No."
"Did he go with her after you came up to me?"
"I guess."
"Well, maybe he does like you, but since you talked to me, he thought you didn't like him and so he's trying to get his mind off you."
"I doubt it."
"You never know if you don't ask."
"I'd rather not know?"
"Really?"
"Yeah."
"Well, he's right behind us." Zach said, standing up and walkung back inside.
Shawn sat down next to me.
"So." he said.
"So."
"I didn't think that you liked me."
"I didn't think so either, but when I saw you with her, it hurt."
"I'm not dating her or anything."
"I know. It's stupid, I'm sorry. "
"I've always liked you, y/n. You were just oblivious."
"So, what now?"
"I don't know. Let's just take it slow."
I nodded.
"What about Zach?"
"I don't know. I don't want to hurt him, but I think I already did."
We didn't say anything for a bit.
"Let's just go inside and have dinner with the rest of them. We'll figure things out tomorrow." Shawn said, standing up.
I nodded, following behind him.
"No matter what happens, you're always going to be my best friend." Shawn whispered, sitting down next to the girl again.
