R U N N I N G
F O R  M I L E S

It was a boring good for nothing Sunday. No one has been home all weekend as my father has been stuck at the office trying to help the town over on a missing persons case and Sammy he's been apparently catching up with an old friend.

I couldn't help but think about my friends back at Green Meadow high. Well I mean I only had one real friend that I would talk to at school and occasionally outside of school, the others on the other hand were more just people Hanna and I would sit with at lunch.

Hanna Anderson was plan, if I'm being honest. She had long curly dark brown hair which looked almost black, she had a pale complexion and she's thin not a single curve to her body.

She was plan and boring but she was still my friend, she would let me come over to house occasionally and share her food with me at lunch when my mother hadn't bought anything. She would always talk about boys even though not many gave her a second look they more or so looked at me when we walked down the hall.

Well that is if they weren't scared of the infamous Boston Kain.

Boston had pretty much made it clear to the whole male student body of Green Meadow High that if any male looks, touches or even breathes in my direction they will be extremely sorry. I remember one-time Mike Mckinnon had grew the balls to come and sit with Hanna and I in the cafeteria, tried to ask me out to diner but Boston had gotten up from his table and beat the crap out of him before Mike could even register what was happening.

Mike ended up in the hospital for a few weeks while Boston was only suspended for a few days, all thanks to his dad slipping the school a few hefty amounts of cash.

I knew that Hanna wanted a boyfriend and that she would do anything to have someone that would treat her like Boston treated me. She seemed to fantasize about Boston and I, she would blabber on for hours just mindlessly talking about how one day she wants to have someone look at the way Boston looks at me, have someone hold her hand and kiss her without a care in the world just like Boston did to me, have someone love her as much as Boston undeniably loved me.

If only she knew how wrong she was.

Hanna and I still talk occasionally and we even sometimes call and catch up on each other's lives. She tells me about Green meadow high and how it's just not the same with me not there, she said she even has a boyfriend when I asked her who she told me that I'd never guess and she was right, because I would never have guessed that she would go on to date Mike Mckinnon, she also gives me Boston updates as well they are never really that good, his name always sends shivers down my spine.

She's knows about some of the reason why I left Pennsylvania but not quite everything that pushed me to leave. She knows that he's obsessive and nothing like she used to think he was.

I'm pulled out of my thoughts as I a loud ping sounds through the empty, quiet house. I looked down at my phone and see that I have a text message from none other than Hanna Anderson.

Hanna – I'll call you in ten.

Eden – Okay sounds great :)

I got up off of my bed and walked over to my window nook, I wrapped the fluffy blanket around me and looked out over at the lake. I couldn't help but look out into it, I wondered if people really did drown and die in there or if they really are just rumors.

Once again, I'm being pulled out of my thoughts buy my phone ringing, I look down at the caller id to see that its Hanna, I instantly tap of the green button that answers her call.

"Oh my god! Eden hi!" Hanna pretty much screams into the phone.

"Hey Hanna, how are you?" I asked excitedly.

"I'm great but not near as great as when you used to be here oh please tell me you'll come visit me soon." she cried unable to contain her emotions.

"I don't know about that Hanna." I said honestly as anxiety pumped through my veins.

"Aww come on Eden, it's been three months and I miss you like crazy." she sighed into the phone.

I felt bad, I really did but I can't risk going back there to see Hanna when I could easily bump into Boston and that would be something I definitely couldn't risk happening. Who knows what that psychopath would do?

"I'm sorry Hanna it's just I need to focus on my school work here, maybe you could come here when schools over." I reasoned with her.

"Sure, that's a splendid idea." She said happily.

"So how are you and Mike going?" I asked instantly trying to change the subject.

"We are great oh you would love him! His so good to me Eden, he always opens doors for me, he's a real gentleman and he really knows how to please a lady." she giggled mischievously.

"Hanna! Too much information girl." I laughed into the phone.

"I'm just telling the truth." I can pretty much see her rolling her eyes with a red blush staining her pale cheeks.

"Anyway, have you, you know got a boyfriend yet." She asked.

"No way, I've only been here three months." I laughed.

"Only being there three months has nothing to do with that, there's a girl that came her not long after you left and she's already had four boyfriends in the span of a month." She cackled.

"Well you of all people should know I'm definitely nothing like those types of girls." I laughed along with her.

"Eden, Boston isn't moving on like you had hoped."

Her words struck me like lighting to metal. It hurt, I really hoped he would move on and forget about me but I guess that's not what I thought would happen.

"He's trying really hard to find where you are and it doesn't look like he's going to be giving up any time soon." She said seriously.

"Fuck." I breathed out.

"Dude, he's full on like asking around school. Remember that Carter kid you used to be friends with?" she paused.

I nodded, but then realized she couldn't see me, "Hmm?" I hummed, not knowing where she was getting at.

"Well he fucking shoved Carter right up against the lockers cause he thought that he had something to do with your 'disappearance' or some shit."

Carter and I weren't good friends but we spoke in Math's, he was quiet and kept to himself, so I don't know why he would straight away target cater like that. I can't believe he did that to Carter, he probably cried afterwards. He's extremely sensitive and drama-free.

"He didn't hurt him though. . .right?" I asked

Hanna cleared her throat, "In what way?" She replied warily.

My eyes widened, "In the physical way. . or verbal, I don't fucking know." I responded, growing stressed as my palms began to sweat.

"Both?"

I gulped, wishing I could just teleport back to Green Meadow for a moment, just to make sure he was okay. I didn't have much friends back there, and I'm not sure Carter and I even were friends, but he's a good kid, the type that brings his own PB&J sandwiches to school in a eco-friendly lunch box, the type that lends you his chem notes and constantly has fogged up glasses.

But it was selfish of me because I wouldn't go back, despite wanting to so badly. I knew it'd put me in risk of my own safety and dignity, all I could do was sit here and hope for the best.

"Make sure he's okay for me, please?" I asked.

Hanna replied, "Of course."

I smiled, though it was forced, "You stay safe too, okay?" I told her, "Come visit me sometime, yeah?"

"I'd love too." She said but not as energetically as she did when I picked up the phone.

"Well I've got to go." I said hurriedly as I tried to conceal the panic in my voice.

"Of course, I'll call again soon, I love you Eden please stay safe." she said worriedly.

"I will don't worry about me okay? You stay safe as well and I love you too." I said as I hung up the phone.

I chucked my phone on my bed and quickly started to pace around the room. My mind started to race with dangerous and heartbreaking thoughts. I needed fresh air and I needed it now before I had a panic attack.

Wasting no time, I shoved my phone in my grey sweat pant pocket, pulled on a grey jacket over my black singlet and I rushed out of the house not before slipping into my Ugg boots and pushing my glasses back up onto my face.

I swiftly made my way out of the house by going through the back sliding door that lead down to the lake. Once I was outside and near the lake, I made a right turn and jogged over to the rickety old wooden jetty. I rushed to the very end of it even though some of the old wooden boards creaked and dipped down making it feel as though the panels of wood couldn't hold my body weight.

Collapsing down onto the ground I try to suck in deep breaths of air, but my lungs didn't seem to cooperate with me. I was obviously having some sort of panic attack, as my chest was excruciatingly tight, I felt as though I could barely breath and I could feel the sudden wave of nausea about to hit me.

Trying to take slow deep breaths I managed sit up and regain some air, I look down into the water, it's so deep that you can't see anywhere near the bottom I couldn't help but wonder how many lost citys or unknown creatures could be lurking around under there. The top was a different story, it was crystal clear you could even just seem to make out the kelp leaves.

I soon noticed that my breathing was pretty much back to normal but the thoughts that seemed to twirl around in my head like a tornado were far from gone.

Was Boston really still looking for me?

Is he really going to hurt innocent people all because I left him?

Was it really my best idea to run away from him?

I'm ripped away from my thoughts by the feeling of someone quickly picking me up and then chucking my body into the dark lake. I didn't waste any time in kicking my legs so that I could get up to the surface of the water for air.

Once my head popped out of the clear water, I could hear someone letting out a deep uncontrollable laugh. I rubbed the water from my eyes and the first thing they zoned in was bleach blonde hair.

Lakyn Westbrook.

"You should see your face." he said in-between fits of laughter.

"It isn't funny Lakyn." I grumbled as my body seemed to get used to the water.

"It isn't funny Lakyn." he mimicked me in the best high pitch voice he could do.

"Oh, grow up." I rolled my eyes at him.

"Oh, grown up." He mimicked and put a hand on his hip to try and be more dramatic.

"I fucking hate you." I said under my breath, as I swam over to the end of the small jetty like structure.

"Wait come on, let's just swim around for a bit." Lakyn said as he pulled off his black hoodie which then left him in black ripped jeans and his converse.

I couldn't help it when my eyes lingered over his bare chest. I really do get why his ego is so damn big, I couldn't help but think of how many girls had seen him with no shirt on just drooling over his pale six pack and his toned arms.

"Keep on looking and I might just have to take you to my bed," Lakyn winked as he jumped into the lake.

That statement seemed to just confirm, how big his ego really is.

"Lakyn you know the rules we shouldn't even be in here in the first place, my father would give both of us a ticket if he found us in here." I rambled once his head broke the surface of the cold Lake.

"Take a fucking chill pill Eden, I've never been caught and I never fucking will." he said smartly.

"What happens if we get caught." I asked.

"Well I hope your either really good at running or really good at finding a good excuse." He laughed as he seemed to remember a past memory.

"I'm guessing you've done this before then?" I wondered off the top of my head.

"Yeah, I've never left a lady unsatisfied." he winked, wriggling his eyebrows suggestively.

"Are you stoned? I was talking about swimming in here." I laughed, splashing water into his face.

"Well to answer both your questions yes and yes." He said proudly.

"I was joking about the stoned part." I said narrowing my eyes at him suspiciously.

"Fuck." he said under his breath.

I took a quick glance into his eyes and noticed that Lakyn Westbrook was indeed 'stoned'. You could tell by how the whites of his eyes were in fact bloodshot and glassy, one of the main indications one has been smoking weed.

"Well anyway how the fuck did you know I was out here?" I asked.

"I could see you from my window you looked stressed so I was going to offer you my stress relieving services." he said as though it was normal to say that.

"No Lakyn I don't want to have sex with you." I said making a vomiting noise.

"Whatever you'll be begging for me to, they always do." he said

"I mean except Lila." I said, knowing all to well this would cause some type of conversation.

"Ugh Lila Fucking Hayes." he said rolling his eyes as disgust and hatred seemed to fill every word.

"Oh god what happened now." I laughed, kind of wishing I hadn't have bought up Lila.

"I was hanging out with Hale and we were going to go and get weed actually but Hale ends up getting a call from Lila saying that she's bored and has nothing to do, hale explained that he was busy and couldn't see her but no, do you wanna know what this chick did?" he asked as he rambled on about what was bothering him.

"What did she do?" I asked trying to seem interested in what he was telling me.

"She had the absolute nerve to come to Hales place and just invite herself, like can you believe that?' he asked.

"For a smart girl she's pretty stupid." he added shaking his head.

"How so?" I asked as I was actually intrigued at what Lakyn was telling me.

"Well we told her to stay in the house otherwise our dealer might try something with her but no little miss perfect just had to ignore us and she came straight into the house with us."

He sighed, "She's so infuriating."

"I didn't want her to come in the first place." he added frustratedly.

"It was way to dangerous, she has know fucking idea what this guy is capable of." he said shaking his head.

I got where he was coming from, even though he supposedly hates her guts it still shows he somewhat cares about her deep down inside.

Yet I still couldn't help but feel the need to defend her "I don't think she meant to get in the way and be annoying."

"It still amazes me how you stick up for her even though she's a massive bitch to you." he said.

"I just feel as though there is more to her and that I really shouldn't judge her so fast, maybe you should take that into consideration." I said trying to give him some guidance or something.

"I've been friends with that bitch for years and she's still been the same stuck up brat." he said rolling his eyes, I'm about to say something when he covers my mouth and points over to the shore of the lake.

"Oh my god that's a police car come on let's get out of here." he said as he let go of my mouth and swam back over to the jetty thing.

But little did he know it wasn't just any police car but it just happened to be none other than Sheriff Rivers, my father.
