MIDORI POV
"Are we there yet?" My teammate Ena sighed loudly. Ever since yesterday we set out from the village to do a little spy work. I had assumed spying jobs were only for the ANBU working under him, but I guess the Hokage wanted a different rank to try it. Then my team was chosen like we were pulled from a drawing box labeled "my test puppies". Well I guess we were lucky to have been given a mission at all since staying home was rather boring.
I would have even hung out with Sasuke if I had nothing to do that day. But since he got chosen to become an ANBU, he went for it. I haven't seen him for a while now. Probably a few weeks ago I saw him talking to the Hokage before leaving soonafter. I assumed he had a mission so instead I wanted to hang out with Naruto. Sad thing is that Naruto is the Hokage now. Tsunade-sama had retired a few years ago saying something about 'Hokage work makes me feel my age'. I actually do miss her tough training sessions in the mornings. She is actually a strick teacher, but you would be considered one of the greatest if she ever trained you.
That brings me to Sakura. She's lost her obsession to my friend Sasuke. I don't know why but she publicly announced that she would forget Sasuke, mostly since he's never here most of the time. But the other day I saw her walking with this guy, and they were linking arms! I felt a bit happy for her, unless I was misunderstanding something. Along the lines of people together I see Hinata helping out with Naruto's Hokage work a lot these days. Then after that he'd invite her to Ichiraku's for dinner. Everyone in the village knows their status is almost to dating.
"Are we there yet?" Ena asked again. I was already tired but I can flip over a tree any day now if she wont stop asking that question! "We're not there yet Ena, its only going to be another day away." My other teammate Rito turned around so she would stop complaining. After that I thanked Rito in my head since it was now very peaceful and quiet. "There's our stop." I pointed ahead to the lights of the village ahead while checking around to make sure there were no traps whatsoever, or even an ambush. Ena jumped up and down in happiness before dashing ahead, leaving me and Rito to stare before running after her.
My feet were dragging by the time we walked into an inn that looked decent. The outside was made of wood, making this place seem more live a cabin to use when it snows. The interier didn't look shabby, instead it had that classical style to it. It was a three story building but the only rooms that were open were on the second story. As we took the key off the counter and trudged up the stairs I saw an ANBU walk be. Said person stopped and looked at me, but I couldn't stop walking since I was anticipating to get some actual sleep.
"Finally, sleeeeep!" As soon as Ena landed on the bed, she was passed out. "I'll take the couch, Mi-san can take the other bed." Rito spoke while pulling out a few blankets from the closet. "No. You can take the bed today since you always insist I get it on every trip." I gestured towards the bed while taking the blankets from him. "Are you sure?" I nodded to his reply and lay down comfortably. He bowed before crawling onto the other bed, and as soon as his head landed on the pillow, he was fast asleep.
I was about to close my eyes before a soft knock was heard on the door. It was soft enough no one one wake up from it, but loud enough so a person who was still awake would be able to hear. I looked to see them both sleeping soundly before grabbing a kunai from my pouch, heading to the door stealthily. I opened it slowly to see the ANBU from earlier standing there. I saw him holding nothing so I opened the door a little wider.
"Can I help you?" I asked while rubbing my eyes slightly, trying to stay awake long enough to hear this person out. "It's me." He took off his mask and behind it I could see that familiar smirk with those onyx eyes. It was Sasuke. "What are you doing here?" I stepped out of the room and closed the door softly behind me so I wouldn't bother the other two, even if they're passed out Rito has the sharpest ears. "I'm finished with my mission. So I'm staying here before heading home." So Uchiha finished his mission eh. Seeing him done makes me want to just get my mission over with and head home back to where I stay bored all day.
"Lucky." I sighed while he watched me. "Are you guys on a mission?" He asked while starting to walk down the long corridor. "Yeah. Well be getting to our destination tomorrow." I checked to make sure the door was locked firmly before following him. He opened his room door and let me in first before following. His room actually looked better than our 'seemingly spacious' one. "What is your mission on?" I sat down on the couch while he brought me warm tea, before taking a seat next to me. "We're supposed to be spying on this rich enterpriser that lives on an island a few miles off the coast. I believe they said it wasn't guarded well so even a genin could get in. But I can't hope for a miracle."
I sipped the delicious chai tea while he was thinking. It stayed silent for a while so I decided to look at his mask. It resembled a fox in which it has small holes for the eyes.....and? I tried it on seeing it could fit on my face, but there is one problem. "Sasuke. Why is it hard to breathe in here?" I was sure there were holes for the eyes, but where are the rest of them? "Here." He adjusted the mask and in no time cool air was breezing through. I touched the mask again and found that now there was tiny slits on the whisker part of the paint that opened up.
"Cool! I always wanted to try one." I took it off and closed the spaces before setting it on the table. "So how was your mission?" I looked to see him staring at me for a while before shaking his head slightly. "All I had to do was assasinate a merchant." I tilted my head to the side in confusion. Assasinate a merchant? Weren't merchants only supposed to sell stuff, not do anything that can get him killed. What was he doing anyway? I guess the curiosity doesn't hurt to ask....right? "What did the merchant do?"
"He was selling poison in disguises such as candy. He kept getting the kids killed, and I guess since Naruto heard of it before he wanted me to kill him before the trend spreads to other villages." Hmm. I've actually heard about that while we were passing through a small village earlier in the trip. "Well I'm kind of glad he's not here then."
"But here's the thing. The enterprise guy you're going to spy on is the source of all the poisoned candy." My eyes almost bulged out of my head. We're going to spy on a very dangerous man that can get us killed in an instant. Hmm. Then I guess the Genin can't get past the guards unless they were like Naruto.
"So I'll accompany you guys there." He stood up and walked to the small fridge, opening it before grabbing a small bottle of water. "Huh?" I was completely dumb-founded as to why he ever wanted to come with us when he finished his own mission. "I'll be hidden the entire time, but whenever you need me, just whistle okay?"
"Okay." I stood up and put my cup of finished tea in the sink before heading to the door. "Thanks Sasuke." He gave me a small smile and nodded while I opened the door and left for my own. I used the extra key to open the door, quietly creeping in to see them...gone?! I ran inside and looked around before being tackled to the ground. "State your business or feal my wreath!" I heard Ena's voice from above. I struggled in her grip because she was literally chocking the air out of me. The lights turned on and Rito was in front of my face.
"Um. Ena. This isn't an intruder." Rito shook his head and stood up while Ena looked down at me. "Oh! Sorry Mi-chan." She rubbed the back of her head while nervously laughing. I took in as much air as I could, letting the blood circulate and do its thing before smiling up at my now confused teammates. "Great job on that tackle Ena. I couldn't see it coming. And I don't think its wreath, but maybe wrath?" I popped my shoulders and stretched my back before getting comfortable on the couch again. Ena and Rito both sat on their beds and stared. "By the way, what were you and Sasuke doing?" Ena asked as I draped the blanket over me. "Just talked about our mission, that's all." She didn't seem to be convinced. "So you guys didn't do anything else?"
"What do you mean?" I stared a her with my head tilted to the side. What would she be implying about us? "She means you guys didn't do stuff like make out or anything." Rito answered in her place as my face started turning beet red. "W-why would we do that? We're just close friends." I stuttered as I tried to cool my face by fanning it with a folder that was on the floor.
"Come on Mi-chan. Everyone in Konoha knows of you two's close friends and rivals thing, but we all hope you guys would get in a relationship already. We're all anticipating it, probably throw a party for the nice occasion." Ena clasped my hands in hers while she stared me in the eye determinedly. "We'll help out if you want."
"Look. I'm glad you guys are looking out for me and everything, but its okay. When the time comes it might happen. Just don't hope for much." I lay back down the couch and pretended to sleep. I heard them sigh before I heard the sheets shuffling, hinting they were back in their beds. I sighed silently in my head.
There's no way that's going to happen between me and Sasuke. We're just close friends, and I bet he'd want to marry a girl that would fit his preference. And I wouldn't be in that category that's for sure. Close friends just can't be in a relationship, it would be weird. With thoughts filling up my head it took a while before I finally drifted into sleep.
