Felix has made his decision.

He couldn’t keep on fooling himself.

Early morning, Felix walked around the streets, passing by a school, the municipal hall, the church, and many houses and business places. It was perhaps around six in the morning, as the sun is not yet too hot out. He must’ve been walking for a while now since his stomach grumbled, and Felix looked around to see if there was a bakery nearby.

He saw one, and it was open. He was about to walk up to the place when he felt a tap on his shoulder, and without even thinking about it, Felix turned around, and was met with a punch to the face, sending him to the ground, unconscious.

◾◾◾◾◾

“Siya nga ang lalaking iyon.”

“He’s really that guy.”

“Umaali-aligid siya kay binibining (Y/N). Ang nakakapagduda, hindi siya mukhang Kastila.”

“He’s always hanging around Lady (Y/N). The suspicious thing is, he doesn’t look like a Spaniard.”

“Baka isa siyang espiya! Isang taong mula sa ibang lupain na nagpapanggap lamang na isang dayuhan para tayong lahat ay dakpin!”

“Maybe he is a spy! A person from another land pretending to be a tourist to capture us all!”

“Kailangang mawala siya sa mundong ito!”

“He needs to disappear from this world!”

Felix groaned at the sound of loud and unfamiliar voices swirling around him. His head was hurting, and he had trouble opening his eyes. When he did, though, he felt a stinging sensation around his arms and legs, and once he had adjusted his vision, he saw himself tied up, standing on an old wooden chair. Felix began to panic, and what caused him more nervousness is the feeling of a rope tied around his neck, and the voices of those around him shouting something repeatedly.

“PATAYIN SIYA! PATAYIN! PATAYIN! PATAYIN SIYA!”

“KILL HIM! KILL! KILL! KILL HIM!”

Felix was not that dumb to not understand what these people were chanting. He started to panic, looking around to see unfamiliar faces of angry people, all looking like they wanted him gone.

And he was not wrong.

Felix felt the tears springing to his eyes, and it took him strength to will them back into his eyes. What has he done to deserve this?

“You remember the two people who passed by us yesterday?”

Felix nodded wordlessly.

“They’re some of the people who started the rumors. They hated my clan for decades, and have been trying things to cause my family absolute embarrassment,” she mutters. “They’re powerful people, and many fear them. My brother once told me that they kill people when they think they have done something to bring down Spain and the Filipino citizens who love Spain.”

He remembered. Felix could faintly recall the faces of those two people, but they were definitely men; two tall men with a clean cut mustache and gelled back hair. He looked around the crowd once again, and saw those two men blending with the mob. They looked smug, like they were happy that he was finally caught. He tried to break free, but if he lost his footing, it would surely mean the end of his life.

He was starting to lose hope. No one would come to save him.

Felix felt a sense of betrayal. At least he had hoped (Y/N) was there. But she wasn’t present. She wasn’t standing among the crowd. If she was there, he was sure she would stop at nothing just to free him. If she was there, all will be well for Felix.

But now was not the time for daydreaming. This is reality, all happening like a film, and this is all true. Even if it was years and years past.

A bulky man in a Spanish suit came to him with an angry look, and approached him slowly like how a predator comes up to his prey. He gripped on the chair, and is about to pull it to the side to leave him hanging, but like in all movies and in all novels, Felix’s saving grace came.

“LAYUAN NIYO SIYA NGAYON DIN!”

“LEAVE HIM ALONE THIS INSTANT!”

All eyes went to the girl who gave off a strong aura, one that a man usually possesses. Felix wanted nothing more than to sink down six feet under the ground, but when he heard her voice, the voice he had grown to love since his stay in the 1896 version of the Philipppines—(Y/N)’s voice.

“Hindi siya Kastila, at hindi rin siya isang espiya,” she stomps over to him and frees his arms and legs of the ropes that restrained his movements. She helped him stand up, and with a strong yet gentle grip around his arm, she looked up at him with a gentle smile as they face the crowd.

“Isa siyang kaibigan. Isang napakalapit na kaibigan.”

“He’s not a Spaniard, and he’s not a spy. He’s a friend. A very dear friend.”

Everything went silent for a while, until one shouted angrily, “HINDI IYAN TOTOO! PATAYIN SIYA AT ANG LALAKING IYAN!”

“THAT IS NOT TRUE! KILL HER AND THAT MAN!”

Felix’s first instinct was to scream and run, but (Y/N) had beaten him to it. Without warning, she tugged on his arm and sprinted for both their lives, dashing away from the angry mob who wanted their heads.

Felix could not do much but run, and as he let the dusty air hit his skin, he felt the blood rush in his veins, pumping him up and urging him to run faster. He felt much more alive because of the hand that was holding his, and the need to escape to a peaceful life burned his lungs, pouring fuel over his throat and giving him the much needed energy to run faster than ever.

“Felix!” he heard (Y/N) shout, and he looked over his shoulder to see her face.

The ponytail that held her hair back was long gone, and all that was left is a mop of silky hair that ran with the wind, pulled back by the force of the air. Her eyelids were partly closed to prevent much dust from entering her eyes, but they kept the same glint, and her smile was still there, despite the situation they were in.

And for the second time, Felix felt free.

He wanted to stay in this timeline forever, he thought. He didn’t care about technology anymore, or his job, or everything that he left in the present times. There was his family, but in his young mind filled with opinions, nothing could beat the happiness he was feeling. And that was because of a girl around his age from the past.

As Felix removed his gaze from her, he slowed down his pace to rest their legs for a while. They must have overworked their limbs since they ran for quite some time, so a well-deserved rest is needed. Felix let go of (Y/N)’s hand for a little while to press his palms down on his knees as he heaved big breaths. (Y/N), on the other hand, forced herself to stand up straight to take in the smell of her surroundings, closing her eyes shut and letting the calming feeling soothe her body.

After a little while, Felix took her hand again so they could start running—the mobs could be near. He was about to take her hand and run again, but (Y/N) had other plans. She, this time, led the two of them away from the main road and headed for an alleyway, leading the both of them to a street branching from the main, where there are more houses and less people.

“Why are we here?” Felix whispered. The mobs chasing them can easily find them if they were to hide somewhere here. “(Y/N), if we hide here then we’ll be dead meat. Let’s go to the square, there are many people there and we can lose the mobs—”

“Felix, shush,” (Y/N) said and went through another alleyway, leading to another street. This went on for another set of minutes, until they reached a familiar road that Felix cannot forget.

“What are we doing here?”

(Y/N) had brought him to the exact place where he landed. It was the same dusty road, stale air, line of houses, seldom people passing. With his hand in hers, she led the two of them in the middle of the street, standing in the middle of the road. She then let go of his hand and looked up at him with a pair of sad orbs and a smile that didn’t reach up to her eyes. For some reason, Felix felt his heart clench at the sight alone. He didn’t want to leave her behind.

“I have read somewhere that if you go back to the exact same place where you were transported to at the exact same time, you will be brought back to the dimension where you came from,” she says. “But to carry that plan out successfully, you have to bring a piece of the past to take with you.”

“I don’t want to leave,” Felix finally says. “I don’t want to go back to my life.”

(Y/N) bit her lip and took off one of her pearl earrings and handed it to Felix, clasping his hand in hers while giving him the accessory. “Take this with you,” she says with teary eyes. “So you can look back and remember me whenever you look at it.”

“No,” Felix was close to crying and tried to give (Y/N) back her earring, but she stepped back and shook her head, gently closing her eyes to prevent her tears from falling. “I can’t. I can’t leave this place.”

“But you have to,” she argued. “You have to go back to your dimension and continue your life. If you don’t, then you’re basically dead there.”

“I don’t care anymore,” Felix took big steps towards her and engulfed her in a tight hug, one of the warmest hugs his arms can produce. (Y/N) struggled to get out of his grip by pushing his chest with her arms, but Felix was much stronger than her, until her tears and emotions took the best of her and let her arms dangle to her sides, letting Felix hug her.

“I can’t bear to lose you,” he whispered in her ear and looked up at the sky. Squinting his eyes, he hugged her tighter, not caring about the mobs searching for them.

“Me too,” (Y/N) mumbled softly, letting the two of them stay in that position for a little while before letting go of each other. “Let’s go now. The mobs are probably near.”

Felix unwound his arms around the girl and grabbed her hand, deciding to run away once more with her. And this time, there was nothing to hold him back from staying.

As the moon slowly rose to its glory into the obsidian sky, (Y/N) and Felix rested on the ground under a narra tree. He tucked his arm under (Y/N)’s head and let her sleep peacefully, letting her get the rest she deserved after running miles with him.

However, Felix wasn’t feeling that sleepy yet. Slowly, he reached into his pocket and pulled out the pearl earring (Y/N) gave him. He smiled softly, letting the pad of his thumb trace over the accessory before looking at the girl, leaning down to place a sweet kiss on the top of her head.

“I won’t ever leave you,” he whispered before falling into a deep, deep sleep.

The moment Felix woke up, he felt a burst of ache shoot through his head. Clutching his hair, he opened his eyes and saw white.

“Am I in the hospital?” he asked himself, still groggy as he pushed himself up. He was about to stand up when he realized one thing.

(Y/N) wasn’t there when he woke up.

Frantically, Felix tried to search for her, but it was hard, because all he could see was white. Still, he ran to find her, hoping she would appear anytime and give him one of those warm hugs he loved.

However, no luck.

Before the thought of giving up even crossed his mind, he came across a tablet. Its screen was bright and is showing some type of video, so, with much curiosity, he picked it up and looked at the screen.

And what he saw made his heart drop.

There he was, bloodied and struck with a knife to the chest, crimson liquid running from the side of his mouth. His body was limp and being carried by a few people, and beside him was (Y/N). She was also lifeless, but this time there were gunshots that killed her. One to the head, one to the chest and one to the stomach. She suffered more damage than Felix, and that’s what made his eyes water and made his heart clench in pain.

Felix couldn’t even speak; he couldn’t even contemplate on why this piece of recording is being shown to him by some invisible entity. Perhaps this was one of another series of antics by Kim Woojin, the president of the drama club in their school. But no, they did not perform anything like this on stage, but (Y/N) wasn’t even in the drama club. So, why was she there? The setting seemed so real, the blood seemed so real, the shots seemed so real, everything seemed so real.

Or perhaps this was his past life in another place—that it was his counterpart who died in another dimension, and is being shown to him for some kind of unknown reason.

As he let his tears fall, Felix felt two arms wrap themselves around his waist. And as he looked down, he noticed that skin. He turned around, and there she was, standing behind him with sad eyes and a forced smile.

“Felix,” she mumbled softly, “I’m guessing you have seen the video.”

“Yes,” he replied shakily. “What did that mean? Where are we? Why am I dead there? Why are you dead there?”

He had so many lingering questions; he did not know where to start.

(Y/N) kept the same expression on her face, and Felix started to get nervous. “That’s us, Felix.”

“What do you mean?” she asked.

“Remember that night when we slept under the tree?” Felix nodded. “That was already two days ago. My family’s enemies killed us that night because they thought you were a Spaniard, and I was hiding you away because I was siding with them. Our bodies were found only two days after a concerned citizen reported a foul stench coming from one of the fields.”

“So...” Felix sniffed. “We’re dead? It’s just it?”

“Yes,” she gripped the hem of his shirt, biting the inside of her cheek to prevent her tears from falling. “In this dimension, you and I are both dead. And since we meddled with fate’s ways and altered the laws of the universe, you are also dead in the dimension you came from, and because I died after you did, my counterpart in your dimension will also die after you.”

It soon came all crashing down to him. Felix looked at the tablet once again, and a clip of his present self flashed on the screen. There he lay, on his spot beside the bed in the guest room, the book (Y/N) wrote sitting snugly on his lap. A tear rolled down Felix’s cheek.

“Hey,” (Y/N) tried to console him, “at least we proved the wedding vow ‘until death do us part’ wrong. Our existences have already been erased from the face of the earth, but we’re still together.”

She reached up to wipe Felix’s tears with her hands. “Don’t cry anymore,” she says. “We’ve got a good life ahead of us. It may not be as exciting as it is when we are still alive, but hey, we’ve got the assurance that we’ve got the deities on our side.”

Felix tried to smile, and he did, but it was still laced with a hint of sadness. That he cannot erase. “You’re right.”

He then grabbed her hand, leading the both of them to a bright light where their beginnings end, and where their end begins.
