ok, on to the story uhue
Alas, the day of departure has come. Everyone went to the airport. There's always something about airports that's kind of depressing as you see other people part from their loved ones, so will it happen to our family.
I watched as he took out his bags. He caught me staring at him so I averted my eyes elsewhere. My heart aches. I don't want him far from me. There's already that sense of longing even when we're still together.
"You have everything?", dad asked Soonyoung.
"Yeah, I do.", he answered. He pulled his bags close to him.
"Take care, Soonyoung.", mom told him. She kissed his cheek and hugged him. "We'll miss you."
Soonyoung just looked at me. It was awkward and I didn't really know what to do. I took the courage to tell him, "Take care." He nodded and went to hug me, too. It was a brief moment, but it was enough.
Another car pulled up. Dad exchanged glances with me. I sighed and headed towards that car. The driver took out a different set of bags and I helped him with them. I looked back and saw that mom and Soonyoung looked confused.
As every bag was out, I walked back towards them and forced a smile. "I'm ready to go as well.", I said.
--Three days ago--
I made my way into the building with the guide of the staffs towards dad's office. I was nervous. It's such a grand trade I'm about to make, but I believe I should do it.
I knocked on the door. "Come in.", said the familiar voice from the inside.
He was surprised to see my face. I gave him a smile and he returned it. "Hey, dad.", I said.
"Hello there, Miyoung.", he said. "What can I do for you?"
I didn't really plan on how to start so I just went straight to my point. "Dad, I'm sorry for everything with Soonyoung, but," I bowed my head. "Please let me be the one who goes instead."
Dad didn't answer so I looked up. He was looking at me with stern eyes. I felt intimidated so I looked down again. "It's because he's graduating this year.", I continued to my reason. "And him transferring at this moment may be hard on him. I'm still a junior so I can say I have plenty more time than Soonyoung. I'd also like to see this as an opportunity for me instead of a sacrifice. I believe this is the better option. So, please, let me go."
I took a peek up again . Dad continued to look at me with those serious eyes. Then, out of nowhere, he chuckled. I fixed my posture and tried to put my chin up.
"The two of you are really amazing.", he said. "The other day, Soonyoung kept pleading to go somewhere nearer instead. Now, you're telling me to have you go in place of Soonyoung."
I can't really give a response to that , so I just nodded my head. "What do you expect me to do? Do you think I'll allow your requests?", he said.
My pupils were shaking. "I-I-- Even so! I believe I should be the who goes instead. Everything started with me, and I should finish what I have done."
Dad exhaled. "Are you willing to do what you just offered?"
"Yes, I am." My voice wavered as I said that. It's obvious that I really am not, but I can bear leaving rather than being left.
"You can't change your path if you go this way."
"I... I'm fine with that."
He sighed again. "If that's so, then we'll arrange the papers and get you a plane ticket as soon as possible."
"Yes, dad."
After that, dad went back to his computer and typed some things. I stood there, out of place, and wondered whether I should leave or not. I took a step back and was just about to turn to the door when dad called me.
"Miyoung,", he spoke.
"Yes?", I said in a high-pitched voice.
He smiled before taking a second to speak again. "I'm sorry it had to end this way but," He bowed his head to me. "Thank you for loving my son."
I smiled back at him despite my bitter feelings. "No, thank you for having a wonderful son." Then, I exited the room since I couldn't cope with the pain my heart was feeling at that moment.
--Back to Present--
"I'm ready to go as well.", I said.
Mom and Soonyoung were obviously confused. It hurts me to be smiling happily as I'm about to leave them for a very long time. Soonyoung grabbed on to my shoulder.
"What are you saying?" He scoffed. "I'm the only one leaving today."
"I'm afraid not.", Dad said. "It's only Miyoung who's leaving us."
"Mwo? Yah, what's happening here? You're kidding, right?" Soonyoung shook me as he spoke. I'm trying hard to keep my feelings concealed.
"I'm sorry.", I told him.
"Why are you saying sorry?"
"I'm sorry for taking your place. You'll stay here in Korea, while I'll be the one studying in America. I asked dad to do this."
"Why did you?", he asked. His eyes were watering and I looked away to stop mine from doing it, too. He was shaking me back and forth. "You can't go alone there. That place is not for you to go. You can't leave me here."
"But I want to. I'm going."
"You're lying. You really don't want to. You're just doing this because you think it's better."
"Maybe I am, but I mean it when I say I'm going. So, let me be."
Soonyoung was about to say something else but dad stops him. "Soonyoung, you heard her.", dad said.
Soonyoung lets go of me. Mom walks towards me with a worried expression. She holds on to my hands and squeezes it tight. "If that's what you decided, then I'll respect it.", she said. "But please, take care of yourself." It was enough. I was assured mom understands why. She hugged me real tight. I did so, too, since this will be the last time in a while that I'll be with her.
"Well, Miyoung, I guess we have to go if you don't want to miss your flight.", dad said, breaking me and mom apart. He picked up two of my bags.
I smiled bitterly. "Well, don't want that to happen." I picked up a bag of my own and walked over to dad's side.
"Wait,", Soonyoung said. "Can I go with her instead?" Dad looked at him without an expression, then looked at me. I turned away, not sure what to do. "Even if it's just until the gate?"
"Well, since you volunteered...", dad said. My eyes widened and my heart suddenly started pounding.
Dad handed the bags over to Soonyoung, then went to mom. Mom linked arms with him. "Shall we go?", Soonyoung asked me.
"I-uh-yeah...", I answered. He walked forward and I followed. I looked back and mom and dad were smiling and waving at me. I looked front again and Soonyoung was getting far ahead of me, so I jogged over to his side.
We awkwardly waited until it was boarding time. Even though he said he'll be with me only until we reach the gate, he decided to stay with me. We were seated right next to each other, but neither of us started a conversation. I played with my hands and checked my watch every once in a while. I'd steal glances at him, wanting him to start speaking.
I sighed. "It was a surprise, huh?", I said.
"Hm?" He scoffed. "More than a surprise..."
"Well, tadah~", I said in a sarcastic tone, even if it's too late for that.
He tilted his head backwards and closed his eyes. "I'm not even going to ask why anymore, but please tell me when you arrived there already."
"Of course, I will."
After I said that, it will most likely progress to another unpleasant silence, but he took my hand in his. "I wasn't careful enough that you had to do this.", he said.
I frowned at him. "Stop saying it's your fault. You weren't the only one in our relationship."
"Yeah, but--"
I put a finger over his lips. "Stop it."
He groaned. "Ugh, I hate this. I still like you so so much.", he practically screamed.
I blushed. "Yah, keep you voice down, would you?"
"Ani, I'll be a wreck once you're gone." He pouted and hung his head low. I cupped his face and brought him to look at me.
"Don't get so depressed over one girl.", I told him.
"But it's not just one girl, it's you.", he whined.
"... And you're not just some boy to me, either..." I hesitated to say the following words, but I wanted to tell him what I felt. "You literally mean a lot for me.
"You're basically my first in a lot of ways. My first brother, my first guy friend, my first kiss, my first... um, you know--"
He smirked. "Yeah, I know."
"You're this guy who annoys me and makes me laugh but is full of surprising charms, and you've taken care of me so well during the past year. You're a really important person to me. I'm really grateful to have met you."
"If there's a cheesy line I prepared, it would be something with angels and miracles.", he said. I cringed just with the thought of him actually saying it. "But, I'm not good at that.
"You're a really important person to me, as well. I didn't want to lose you, but I also couldn't bear to risk hurting you. I just really wanna say, stay with me. Even if it's not possible, I want to be by your side. So, will you?"
It was obvious our feelings for each other are still strong. I bit my lip and shook my head. "I can't do that, I'm sorry."
He nodded, understanding. "I knew that..."
"FLIGHT 64J, NOW BOARDING."
I dreaded the moment they would announce that. We stood from our seats and I prepared myself for my flight. Every other person boarding started lining up.
Soonyoung pulled on my sleeve. "Wait,", he said. "Can I kiss you?"
I blushed. That came right out of nowhere. "I feel like I'll miss you more if you do.", I said.
"So do I, but I feel like I'll regret not giving you one last kiss."
"Same." I closed my eyes and waited for him to lean in.
So it happened. The cliche airport parting kiss that happens in dramas. It was embarrassing to do it in a public place, but it was worth it. I guess we both know by now that we're slowly accepting our circumstances, and what we really are.
I blew air out of my nose. "I guess I'll go now."
He nodded. "Mm."
I hugged him one last time. "Goodbye."
He hugged me back and chuckled. "I prefer, 'see you soon', rather than 'goodbye'." I smiled when we parted.
"Well, if that's what you want then, see you soon.", I told him.
"See you soon.", he returned.
I dragged my bags to the boarding gate. I took one last look back at him. He was smiling at me, gesturing for me to go on ahead. I nodded. I gave my ticket to the person in charge and faced what my inevitable fate will bring me to.
