"This is why I didn't want to be a Lieutenant. Paperwork is the worst" was all I had to say to make Casey starting laughing as he entered his little officer quarters.
Glancing at the door in front of me, I opened it slowly. It felt wrong, taking over my brother's place on Squad. He worked so hard to get to where he is, and simply walking into his quarters with the same title felt weird.
Knowing what I was thinking about, Matt leaned on the door frame as I sat on the bed. The same bed where I have cried, argued, bickered and stressed out my brother on. I have never had an issue before but I took his place, I replaced him. Even though it is for a little while. "Kelly wouldn't want anyone else to fill his spot Blake."
Glancing at the captain, who was like another brother to me, I couldn't help but sigh. "It just feels wrong". With a reassuring look, he entered the quarters.
"I understand. It's definitely going to be a change for all of us, but just think, you won't have to sleep in the bunk room during overnights."
"That is a bonus"
Eventually leaving the room, Matt gave me a chance to settle my nerves. Not exactly wanting to snoop through my brother's things, I grabbed one of our old arson case files. From time to time the two of us would go through them, see if there have been any updates. Sometimes I would just grab a file and see what my brother investigated before I joined the 51 looney tunes crew.
After a little while of catching up, I threw my hair into a ponytail before grabbing my stuff from the locker room. Tomorrow was going to be a test, one that will prove I can handle the responsibilities of being a lieutenant. Saying goodbye to the others, I slid into the suv driving towards the apartment.
Apollo was staying upstairs with Intelligence until Jay came home from shift. Voight and Platt were iffy on the animal but a cute bark and head tilt won them over. Unlocking the apartment door, I let out a small laugh when I got tackled to the ground by the doggo.
"Hey buddy".
Standing up from the ground, shutting the door behind me, Jay could tell I was a little tense. Making my way over to the man, I sat on the couch snuggling into his side. "What's going on fire pop".
Sighing softly I intertwined our hands, the feeling of comfort surging through me. "Kelly's in the hospital and I have to take over squad until he gets back. I don't want to disappoint him, this is a huge responsibility, I don't want to mess anything up".
With the new found information, the man gave me a look of surprise and endearment. "Blake". Hearing my name leave his lips, I tilted my head so I was looking into his mesmerizing eyes, ones full of love. "Your brother wouldn't want anyone else to watch over Squad. No matter what happens he will be so proud of you because you are going to be amazing".
Looking at him appreciatively, I gave him a kiss which he gladly accepted. We were about to get a little bit more heated but a certain doggo didn't like the idea, so he jumped onto our laps and put his face in between the two of us. Chuckling softly, I let him lick my face as I started to pet him. "How was he today?"
Giving Jay my attention, he smiled lovingly at Apollo. "Oh he was good boy but I think some people in Intelligence might try to steal him". With an amused look, I shook my head softly.
"I'm not surprised, Apollo is an absolute sweetheart"
"Not to the bad guys we caught today"
"Well they did something crime worthy, Apollo doesn't like those types of people"

The rest of the night was spent with Jay and I watching movies with Apollo on my lap. Occasionally there was a sneak in kiss or two but the new family member didn't exactly appreciate it. After each time we kissed, we would receive a dog type glare.
Waking up, I rolled over to see the time which only caused me to groan softly. Carefully sliding off the bed to not wake either of my boys, I grabbed my clothes for shift so I can get ready to leave. Quickly running through the routine and changing, I exited the bathroom to see both boys still sleeping soundly.
With a soft smile, I grabbed my bag before giving soft kisses to Jay and Apollo. As silently as I could, I left the apartment to go to work. Boden wants me there a little bit early to meet the temporary squad member, after all we are one member short. My wish is for them to not be annoying and actual understand what they are doing.
Parking the suv in Kelly's usual spot, I hopped out just in time to see Stella. Walking into the firehouse side by side, she gave me the run down on how Kelly is doing, which wasn't very good. "Yeah, he doesn't handle injuries very well"
Making our way towards the bunk room, I spotted Matt motioning for me. Looking at Stella, she grabbed a hold of my bag and nudged me away from her. "Get going, I will handle the bags". With a grateful look, I jogged towards the Captain.
"Have you met the replacement yet?" I questioned once I was in hearing shot.
"Nope, but we are now". Noticing a figure in Chief's office, I wanted to jump in joy when I noticed a feminine figure. Knocking on the door and hearing his authoritative voice, Casey and I entered the office shutting the door behind us.
"Casey, Severide I would like you to meet Dayton Evert. Dayton this is Captain Matt Casey and Lieutenant Blake Severide". Holding my hand out to the girl, she smiled at the two of us before shaking my hand.
"It's an honor to be here, even though it is under terrible circumstances". Giving the three of us a dismissed motion, Dayton followed me, that way I could give her the run down on how things work. As Matt walked away to do his own thing, I gave the newbie a tour of the firehouse, answering her questions.
I was about to enter the common room to introduce Dayton when the bell went off. "You ready". With a confident nod everybody raced out to the apparatus floor and into the designated rigs. Climbing into the passenger seat, I tapped the side of the rig, nerves starting to flutter inside of me.
Glancing at Cruz, he sent an encouraging nod. "You got this Severide 2.0". Hearing the reassurance from him, my brothers right hand man, I relaxed slightly. Approaching the structure fire, I felt all of the worry go straight out the window as a sense of confidence rushed through me.
Jumping out of the truck I tried to come up with a strategy. "Capp, Tony I need you to find the gas valve and shut it off. Cruz your with Evert and I, we're scanning the 5th floor down.".
"Got it Lieutenant". Sliding into the gear, an overwhelming feeling of someone watching caught my attention quickly. Whipping my head towards the side, I tried to find the source before going in but nothing stood out.
Waiting by the doors, I placed the mask over my face giving a nod to Matt. "Squad is starting at the 5th"
"Got it. Truck will sweep the basement and work our way up.". At the tap on my shoulder, I entered the structure with the two squad members behind me. Guiding people running out towards the exit, I opened the door to the 5th floor.
"Spread out, but keep an eye on your surroundings. I'm not losing someone on the first day". Hearing the two responses, we started knocking on apartments and opening doors to check for victims.
Eventually exiting the structure with no people in any of the apartments, Engine started to knock out the fire. Taking off the mask on my face, I let out a breath of relief but that was short lived when a certain girl in truck tackled me in a hug. "How was it Lieutenant Hottie"
Laughing out at the nickname, I nudged her playfully. "Well I didn't mess up so I think pretty good".
"Well I think Kelly might have some competition when he comes back". I was going to banter her but Squad and Truck joined in on the conversation as we put our gear away.
"She's right Blake. From what I can tell so far, you are the exact same as a Kelly"
"Well I would hope so, he taught me everything I know"
"Exactly, a competition between the Severide siblings. Who will prevail". Shaking my head chuckling, I looked out the window with a whole new idea in my mind. Maybe this whole thing won't be so bad.
Author Note
So when Kelly comes back Boden will actually keep Dayton at the firehouse, becoming another member of squad 3. I created Dayton because I wanted Kevin to have a love interest, and I needed another person on Squad while Kelly was gone.
