Chapter 61

Slash's P.O.V.

Screams echoed through the building, except for once, it wasn’t horrendous screams that came from monsters and Experiments, they were from the Scientists.

I held Kanine close to me in my arms, her head buried in my shoulder and her body shaking. Her tears dampened my uniform as they glided down my chest. I could’ve sworn she murmured something but it was drowned out by the sound of boots beating against the tile floor. I glanced up and saw someone sprinting down the corridor towards us, but it wasn’t a Scientist.

“What the—“ a girl halted to a stop several feet in front of me, her eyebrows knitted together in a look of confusion as she looked at me and Kanine with cat-like golden eyes. Two pointed ears grew from her golden blonde hair on the top of her head, and she looked familiar from somewhere but I couldn’t place my finger on it.

“Kanine? What happened?!” She asked frantically, looking from Kanine to me. “Where’s Helena and Kale?”

“H-Helena’s dead, Kale’s gone,” Kanine whimpered, her voice muffled from her face being buried into me. The cat-girl’s eye grew wide, her jaw hanging down. Kanine squirmed in my grip and I carefully put her on her feet. She turned around to face the girl with her eyes open, looking directly into the cat-girl’s.

Her eyes grew wide as she stared at Kanine with a look of horror and shock, even disgust. She looked as if she was trying to say something but couldn’t force anything out as her eyes just stared into Kanine’s.

In the background, the sound of havoc was screaming in the air, the alarms blazing, heavy objects crashing to the ground, the building still rumbling in after shock.

“Where’s Lynx?” Kanine asked, a bit of worry rising in her voice. The girl just gawked for a moment more, as if still in shock from taking in what had happened. “Moretta, where’s Lynx?” she repeated, snapping cat-girl back into reality.

“When the doors to the cages didn’t open, we figured Helena and Kale had gotten preoccupied with another problem and I sent Lynx up to the control tower,” Moretta stumbled with her words. As if they were the magic words, the hallway was illuminated in red, the rumbling becoming more hazardous.

Monstrous roars, snarls, calls, screams, yells, and screeches echoed through the entire facility. Moretta was able to force as weak grin as she let out a small sigh of relief; Lynx must’ve gotten to the control tower and hit the button.

“Come on, Lynx is going to meet us at the shore where we docked. We need to get out of here before this whole place collapses on us.” Moretta yelled with a sense of urgency, sprinting back down the corridor with Kanine and I right behind her. Behind us, the ceiling began crumbling, coming apart as the walls collapsed inward.

Ahead of us, tinted morning light shined in through a large hole in the wall, Experiments already darting out it and towards freedom. Quickly, the three of us jumped through the opening, hearing a small explosion from behind us and the rest of the Alcatraz Facility collapsed, become barely anything but piles of rubble and ruins.

Around us, Experiments looked around as if in a daze, witnessing the outside world for the first time and trying to take in everything all at once. Some amphibian and aquatic liked Experiments snaked into the ocean, disappearing under the waves of the vast sea. Others took off into the air, not daring to look back as they disappeared into the horizon.

“Moretta!” someone called and we all turned to see a small boy running towards us. Moretta and Kanine smiled half-heartedly, obviously knowing the boy.

“Hey there, little man,” Kanine smiled caringly, kneeling down so she was eye level with the boy, Moretta too. Neither of them had to say anything before the boy, who I would have to guess was Lynx, noticed Kanine’s eyes. Tears instantly began to fill his eyes as he shook his head, trying to fight the truth.

“I’m sorry, Lynx,” Kanine sighed as Moretta wrapped an arm around him, bringing him into a hug. I placed a hand firmly on Kanine’s shoulder as a tear slipped down her cheek. She immediately got up and wrapped her arms around me before letting out a sob that tore at my heart.

I wrapped my arms around her as I gently stroke her back, between her wings, trying to calm her down. We all stood there in tears for several minutes before Moretta cleared her throat, speaking up.

“I think we’ve all cried enough,” she sighed, wiping away the last few stray tears under her eyes. “We need to head back to the apartment and plan our next move. I say we head to the Pompeii Facility next in Italy.” She informed, clutching Lynx’s hand. Kanine nodded while I stood there with not a clue about anything she just said.

“The Pompeii Facility?” I asked, raising my eyebrows. Kanine nodded.

“I’ll fill you in as we go, but right now we just need to get out of here,” I nodded in agreement, following behind Moretta and Lynx with Kanine at my side. Suddenly, there was a chill in the wind and I felt my fists clench just as the voices I hated most spoke up from behind.

“Kanine!?” we both turned to face the vampire experiments, their usual shadow complexion looming around them. My eyes instantly went to Scarla who was clutched tightly in Shade’s arms, looking limp and lifeless though her chest heaved as she breathed weakly.

“What?” Kanine snapped as she glared up at Dylan and Shade, her wings ruffling in an annoyed and irritated way. Both boys stood there, gawking down at Kanine as if they were seeing a ghost.

“Y-You’re alive?” Shade stuttered, a look of complete shock across his face.

“As far as I know, yeah, but you don’t look too happy about it.” She snarled, her eyes giving off a ghostly violet glow that made my hairs stand on end. The boys’ eyes stared up and down at her with looks of utter disbelief as they studied her paler skin, her raven black wings, and her ghastly eyes, trying to take it all in.

Before either of them could get another word in, Kanine growled as she rolled her eyes, spinning on her heel and rejoining Moretta and Lynx by a boat that had been pushed up onto the shore. I gave them a final glare before following right behind Kanine.

“Wait!” Shade yelled, making Kanine pause. She barely gave him a side glance before he continued.

“We want in,” he stated, his face cold and dead serious. Kanine scoffed before turning all the way around to face him, looking him dead in the eyes.

“You don’t even know what you’re getting yourself into,” she snapped, bitterness in her voice, but Shade didn’t even blink.

“We overheard you guys talking about the Pompeii Facility and what other reason would you be going there than to shut it down like the Alcatraz Facility,” Dylan spoke up, crossing his arms across his chest. “And we want to help,” he added, Shade nodding in agreement.

Kanine narrowed her eyes, her wings ruffling even more with irritation. I was about to tell them to get lost when Moretta cut in.

“Let ‘em join. We’re going to need all the help we can get,” she stated, nodding for the vampires to come over. Kanine gave them a final glare before turning her back to them, cursing under her breath as she helped Moretta push the boat into the water.

The vampires hopped in right after Moretta and Lynx and I joined Kanine in the back.

“I guess this is only the beginning,” I sighed, looking into her new eyes.

            “You have no idea,”
