Chapter 1- The Assignment

I watched out of the window as the academy came into view. I smiled remembering when I had started it three years ago. Since then I have been stronger and smarter in everything that I do. I guess I just appreciate life more.

I have been training to be a security guard since I could remember. When I was little I was one of those kids that would get into fights at school to try and show off to the boys.

My mother hates the idea of me going around protecting someone, however, my father supported my decision. But, then again, my mother didn't much care for me. She loved my older brother Max because he always got good grades and was athletic.

I expected her to be proud of me when I told her that I had gotten accepted into the academy but the only thing she said was 'I hope they don't show you how to use a gun there.' They did. They showed me how to shoot from far away and close up. Even though I would never have to use a gun in my line of work it is always a good skill to have.

I smiled as I neared the entrance and glanced at the gatekeeper. He allowed me in and I found a place to park in the slightly full parking lot.

As I neared the old brick building I noticed that the walls had moss and vines all over it from old age. The building was put up over 100 years ago. I don't understand why they don't rebuild it. Every time it rains there are leaks everywhere and the floor creaks with every step that you take.

I sighed and shook my head as I opened the front door and headed to my dorm.

After three years of training here I was, going to get my first assignment. Once you have fulfilled the maximum number of years you don't graduate from the school, you just get assigned someone. Once they have assigned you someone to protect, they move you close to the person and you have to stay with them 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

If the person was famous and had multiple body guards, then your job was easier but you moved around a lot. I would probably get an average person for my first assignment. After we had fulfilled our duties we get another one. Or, for celebrity reasons, we can sign a contract that states we will always be with them. But, again, I won't be assigned that since it's my first one.

I walked down the ice cold halls in my black pants, leather jacket, and boots. My dark hair was tied in a tight pony tail, and I was wearing sunglasses.

I stuffed my cold hands into my pockets as I neared the main office. There sat the secretary typing on her old computer behind a bullet proof window. She should really get a new one, the poor women just sits there all day having to deal with the old technology that's in the thing. My phone is faster than that computer.

I smiled at her as she waved me inside to sit and wait for the Head Master.

My heart was beating rapidly and my palms were sweating. I always had that problem when I got nervous. I usually had breathing problems too..

I stood up straight with my hands at my sides as I heard the old oak door creak open. A man in his late sixties stood in front of me with a grey suit on.

I smiled at him as I took his strong hand into mine. I shook it before waiting to be seated. When he finally walked around his large desk and sat down, I smiled and did the same.

He cleared his throat and took out my file from one of the desk drawers. I took a deep breath and watched as he went through it. He set it down and ran his hand through his graying hair.

When I had first started he was so kind to me and caring. It's not often that a female wants to be a security guard so he made sure that I was treated equally.

"Alex?" He asked breaking my train of thought.

"Yes sir?" I asked looking into his pale blue eyes.

He smiled warmly and set my file down. "I told you to call me Mr. Conners since this is the last time that I'm going to see you." He stated with a grin.

I blushed and nodded my head. I looked at him expectantly, not wanting to waste anymore time making small talk.

"So, Alex. Tell me. What was the first thing that popped into your head when you were thinking about your first assignment." He said folding his hands on his desk, leaning forward slightly.

I sat back in my chair and thought about it for a minute. "Um... I guess that I would protect someone for awhile until I was no longer needed." I said. "Someone being?" He asked wanting me to be more specific. "A regular person?" I said, confused at his question.

He then grinned and sat back in his chair. "It's not a regular person Alex. It's a famous singer from a indie pop band in Canada." He said knowing that would catch me off guard.

I gasped as my eyes went wide. Why did the person want me to protect them? Don't they know that I'm new?

"How?" Was all that I could manage to get out. The Head Master smiled and pulled out a another file from the drawer.

"She saw your file and wanted you." Was all he had to say before a grin spread across my face. I had a pretty outstanding file. I never got into trouble at the academy, I had pretty good grades, I did amazing on tests at the academy and was at the top of my class, which the guys didn't like.

"Who is she?" I asked out of curiosity. "That, I can't say until you get there. I'm sorry Alex but you will have to move to Canada to be with her." He said with concern in his eyes. My heart dropped as realization hit me. I would have to move to another country. I would have to move all the way from Cincinnati, Ohio to Canada.

I could decline the offer but I don't think that, that would look good on my record. Plus, this might be good for me.

I sighed after having an internal battle with myself. "When do I leave?" I asked, looking into his blue eyes tiredly. "In a week. We already have your passport and plane ticket ready. You will arrive at the airport and get a set of keys to your new car. You will drive her around when she doesn't have a driver or whenever she needs to go to the store. You will live in the same house as her and go on tour with her. Also, we bought you a new phone. It is set up to where you can call your family here in the States and not be charged for it. The contacts that you need for the job will already be in the phone. It won't be powered on until you arrive in Vancouver, Canada." He said handing me a manila envelope with the assignment in it.

"Why can't I know her name?" I asked. "Because she doesn't want you to overreact. You'll know when you meet her." He said with a smile. "Everything is already being sent to your house that you need. Your radio and everything will be given to you there. Your clothes and other items are being sent to your new home with the exception of a weeks worth with which you will use until you leave. Good luck and be good." He said with a gentle smile.

He shook my hand and walked around the table to give me a big bear hug. I smiled, returning the hug before taking the files and walking out of the door.

I sighed getting into my car before heading home.

I took a deep breath as I looked at the house that I grew up in. I would only be able to see it on holidays now. I sighed not knowing how my family would take the news.

I stepped into the warm house and took my shoes and jacket off. "ALEX!!" My brother said walking out of the kitchen to greet me. I smiled, seeing my tall muscular brother walk towards me for a hug.

I grinned as I smelled his cologne and I hugged him back. He laughed and picked me up in the air. I blushed as he set me back down. We had always had a good relationship. He would protect me in school when I got made fun of or was called a Tom-Boy.

Just then my father came in with the newspaper in his hand. He grinned seeing I had returned home and gave me a giant hug. I smiled as I walked into the kitchen to greet my mother.

"Hello Alexandra." She said looking at me. I bit my lip and looked down at the floor. My mother always called me by my full name. I hated it. I would always try and impress her but she would always love my brother more.

I hugged her anyway and sat down at the kitchen table. "So, what's new?" I asked, looking at my family. My brother frowned and sat across from me. "I didn't come all the way here to make small talk. I came here to congratulate my baby sister on her first assignment!" He said with a grin, taking my hand.

My brother lived in the city while my mom and dad lived in the country. He was a lawyer and made a lot of money. That's probably why my mom loves him more...

I blushed and looked into his piercing green eyes. I always loved how much he supported me.

"What assignment did they give you?" He asked with curiosity. "Um... Maybe we should eat first, I'm starving..." I said, trying to buy time. They nodded as my mother brought the food to the table. I was gone for three years and my mom still cooked the same...

"So... How have you been, Alexandra?" My mother asked, looking at me from across the table. "I've been good..." I said, eating my food. Every time that she tries to talk to me it gets awkward so she usually avoids me.

After we finished eating we all went into the living room to catch up. "So sweetheart, what was your first assignment?" My father asked. I sighed and pushed my hair out of my face. I couldn't avoid this anymore.

"Um... I'm going to protect a famous singer" I said biting my lip. I watched as a proud grin took over my fathers face. "My little girl is gonna do great!" He said as I blushed. "But there's something else..." I said looking at the floor.

"What is it?" My brother asked taking my hand. "She lives in Canada. Meaning, I have to live there..." I said, watching my brothers face fall. My parents both wore shock on their faces.

"What?" He asked, his eyes growing wide. "I have to move there... I leave in a week.. But, I will be able to call you guys whenever I'm not working and see you on holidays." I said trying to reassure them.

"Why do you have to do it? Can't someone in Canada do it?" My brother snapped. I rubbed his back to calm him down. "She picked me. This could honestly be really good for me too." I said, looking at his sad face.

"Is that why movers went into your room today? To get your stuff?" My father asked. "Yes" I said nodding my head. I looked at mother who had not said anything since I told them. "Mom?" I asked. Her blue eyes met my green ones and looked sad. "Honey, I guess I don't like the idea of you moving to another country but if it will be good for you money wise and job wise, then I say do it." She said, shocking me. That's the most supportive thing that she's ever said to me.

I looked at my father who just nodded his head solemnly. I sighed and fixed my hair. "I know this is hard but I still have a week with you guys." I said trying to cheer them up. My brother smiled but I could tell that he was upset.

I took a deep breath and let it out slowly as I stood up and walked upstairs to my room. If you're wondering why I keep taking deep breaths it's because I breathe weird. The doctors say that it's because I don't get enough air into my lungs so I take deep breaths often.

I laid down as the days' events played back in my head. I was stressed about leaving my family and moving, but was really excited to see who this mystery celebrity was.

I closed my eyes and grabbed my teddy bear that I had been given when I was a child, and hugged it to my chest.

Would this job turn out to be a bad idea?
