Chapter 6: Child of Darkness
I had unwillingly, and yet totally willingly, followed Charlie in my car to the
Mansion, I was surprised to see the vintage car he drove, I wasn’t sure what it was
But considering how old it was, I didn’t think it would run as fast as he was driving
It. I couldn’t keep up with him, but still I got to the mansion. He was already
Standing in the threashold of the large mansion. His black hair almost gleaming.
He eyes weren’t visable, because of his fitted cap he was wearing to the front, and
He was looking down anyway. You never would have noticed the journal in
His hand, just because how mesmerizing he was, and how much draw he had.
Charlie motioned me to come over to him in the threashold, I got
Down from my car and walked towards him, almost in a trace, he made the
World almost seem to slow down. And there was something interesting about
The way he seemed to be able to control everything around him. I go to the door
Way, he held his hand out to me without even making eye contact. I was drawn
Back by this, there was something about him that had started to scare me. He
Cracked out his crooked smile and whispered something that wasn’t audioble.
He turned around with his hands in his pockets and I followed him, down the
Same dark hallway from when I had broke in by myseld. However this time
Was even less comfortable than the first time I had been to the house. Even
Though I had actually been invited this time. Charlie turned the light on and
Suddenly everything was illuminated. I could hear the clanking of his foot
Steps as he glided down the hallway. He led me to the kitchen.
The kitchen matched the house, it was large and beautiful, with
overwhelming chandliers hanging down. I was mezomoized, and trying to take in
the gaudiness of the room. I felt as if I was in a dream, something felt off, different,
almost surreal. I looked back down only to find Charlie a few inches from my
face, with his large eyes staring into mine. I took a step back. He seemed serious
yet not threatinnig, and it made me feel a sense of calmness. He lifted up the
journal.
“How much have you read of this?”
He asked me. Still peering into my eyes,
“February of 1939”
I said.
He closed his eyes and rubbed his forehead with the back of his palm.
“February of 1939,”
He repeated.
“What are you thinking?”
I asked.
He looked up at me and scratched his head nervously.
“Helen Reeds, shes the girl who wrote this journal,”
He said.
“Yeah, I know.”
Charlie turned around and walked over to the kitchen cabnents. I watched him pull
Out two glasses, he walked over to the refrigerator and pulled out two cans of
Sprite and a jar of candy cherries. He poured out the sprites and put two candy
Cherries in each glass before carefully putting everything away. He handed me
A glass.
“Sit down.”
He said pointing at the table.
“I’m afraid to. I feel like I might need to run out at any second,”
I said.
Charlie chuckled a bit to himself.
“That’s eaxactly why I want you to sit down.”
He said.
I sat down and looked at him.
Charlie left the room for a bit and entered back in still clinging to the journal, but
Now he had a photo album in his hand.
“I’m sure by now, you have read about her distant love for a boy named
Charles Edwards.”
He said,
I nodded my head. I didn’t want to speak yet, even though I had a million questions, I
Was hoping he would just volunteer up the information.
“And I’m sure you recognized that I introduced myself to you as Charlie Edwards.”
He said.
“Yeah, but in the principles office you told the secretary that your name was Charlie
Milano.”
I said.
Charlie smiled at me.
“You’re sharp, and that threatens me.”
He said.
He sighed and looked outside to his backyard.
“ I have a lot I need to explain.”
He pushed the photo album towards me.
I turned it around and opened it. The first picture in it was a little girl holding
A baby. He pointed to the baby,
“That’s me and the girl is my sister Aurora .”
I smiled.
He flipped through a few pages.
The next picture was of a bride and groom. He pointed to the groom.
“Look at his face.”
He said.
I picked up the dusty photo album and looked closely at his face.
“It’s you.”
I said.
He frowned.
“Yes.”
He took the photo album from my hand.
“And you see the bride with red hair.”
He asked.
I nodded.
“This is Helen Reeds.”
I looked up at him.
“I don’t understand, this is dated 1941 and you look like you’re 18 years old, and the
girl is the same girl who wrote this journal. Which was in 1939, either this is some
sick prank, or something completely bizarre and super natural.”
Charlie looked at me.
“ It’s super natural, I would never do anything so childish. Like a prank”
I bit my bottom lip.
“This is really hard to believe Charlie.”
I said.
“I know but you have to believe me about this.”
I looked at him his eyes were teary.
“So what are you saying?”
I asked.
He looked at me.
“I’m a vampire.”
He said.
“Prove it.”
I said back to him.
He stood up and left the room.
“Follow me.”
I did as he asked and followed him. He led me upstairs into the same
bedroom he Had placed me in the first time I had met him. I however had not
noticed the large mirror hanging over the fire place.
“Look at yourself in the mirror.”
He said as he stood behind me.
“Yeah?”
I said.
“Do you see me?”
He asked.
“No.”
I said in shock.
I turned around to look at him.
“That’s so odd.”
I said.
“I know, I haven’t seen my own face, in about seventy years.”
He said,
I frowned.
I sat on the bed and he walked over to me.
He placed his hand on my hand and looked deep into my eyes.
“I need you to help me.”
He said.
“With what?”
I asked.
“I need to find out what happened to Helen and Aurora.”
He said.
“Well don’t you know?”
I asked.
He looked up at the mirror, where his reflection would be if he were a human being
, instead of a child of darkness.
“You would think I would, she was my wife for two years, and then I had to leave the
city, and I just returned home.”
He said.
“Why did you leave?”
I asked.
“I was connected to a mob back in the 1930’s before prohibition. I ran a speakeasy
underground in Detroit under my father, who had already been dead for several
decades. I used his name though, and he never actually existed. Although
I made him a human being through the letters I wrote, under different aliases
and correspondence. I moved here in order to avoid arrest with Aurora, and had this
home built, by this time I had already had made a large fortune even by today’s
standers from the speakeasy. In 1942, two years after Helen and I had been married,
some police scouts came looking for me here. I was afraid they would find out my
secret, I didn’t want them to know I was a vampire, the only other people who
knew were Aurora and Helen. I didn’t want to think what would happen if the
police caught me. Helen and Aurora wouldn’t be able to live the life I had already
made them accostumed to. And Aurora’s fiancé might have given away our
secret as well, and I wasn’t going to let that happen. So I left one night, around 3 am.
I left a letter on the counter to Aurora and Helen. I told them to leave the city, and
move to Los Angles, I left them a large sum of money along with this note, Helen
at the time was still human, and I asked Aurora if she could change Helen into
a vampire, when she reached the age of 22, so we would be the same age, together
forever, then I told them I would wander throughout the world, until I would
return to this home in April 2009, and would hope they would do the same. I wanted
to let time go by until my whole mobster situation had blown over, and no one
would remember us. ”
He said.
“Well, what do you need me to help you with?”
I asked.
“They never returned, I’ve been waiting here, and they still haven’t shown up.
I know Helen must be dead, I feel it, but I need to know what has happened to her,
And I need to find my sister Aurora.”
I said.
“Why would you need ask me to do this?”
I asked him.
He looked deep into my eyes.
“ In my more than one hundred years in this planet, I have never met anyone who
I have instantly trusted. Like I felt about you, the day I found you lying on my
Living room floor, I knew you didn’t mean any harm.”
“And how am I suppose to trust you?”
I asked.
“You’re just going to have to. Will you please help me Elenore?”
I bit my bottom lip. I wasn’t sure how to answer, he was a vampire, how can I trust
A vampire. I’ve seen the movie The Lost Boys, I know the nature a vampire can have
And how do I know this isn’t all an act. I took my time, before I finally told him my
Answer.
Note: What do you think Elenore is going to say? O_O Will she help him?!?! Or will she turn him down. What do you think of the story so far? And as always I will dedicate my the next chapter to my favorite comment.
