(I wrote this entire this shot at 1:00 AM in the morning while listening to Outer Space / Carry On by 5 Seconds of Summer and I highly recommend you listen to it while you read this because it's half a song fic half not.)

"Nothing like the rain,

Nothing like the rain.

When you're in outer space,

When you're in outer space."

-5 Seconds of Summer, Outer Space/ Carry On

Spontaneous.

That's what Lily wanted to do.

Something Spontaneous.

She wanted to do something you wouldn't expect her to be doing on a simple Thursday afternoon.

You would probably think she would be sitting in her usual spot by the colour stained windows.

Which is exactly what she was doing now. Lily was doing the expected.

And the thing she learnt that day was most people noticed you more if you were doing the un.

This was her exam ridden, rambling, reasons behind why she got up from her prime seat in the common room, with rain battering the window and simply walked out. Leaving all work behind as she walked down the empty corridors without a word.

Her thoughts were drifting along, almost detached from her body. Lily suspected this unique feeling was a result of hours of classwork and study for hours (without fail) she had completed throughout the past week.

Most of the school was studying or doing homework of some kind. It was almost eerie to see how little people went against that. The vast and still corridors we evident of that.

Yet her renewed and slightly bizarre sense of life was rudely interrupted by a sound of joyous laughter which filled the before silent halls.

Lily recognised the group just from the sound of their bellowing laughs and obnoxiously loud banter. And was not at all surprised when the group rounded the corner in front of her, ever laughing still. Yet she was hardly bothered by this, nothing interrupting her steady pace and my longing to get to her destination of anywhere.

However, Lily suspect one my find it almost near impossible to walk past these four lanky teenage without comment.

Sirius catches her eyes first an element of surprise on his face and the laughter dies out as the rest of the group catch her vibrant red headed topped figure.

"Lily Evans not studying in the prime age of 5:00 pm on a Thursday. But surely... Your infamous place at the window will be taken if you're wondering at the castle now!" Sirius said quite dramatically, a performance worthy of his nature.

"I'm experiencing the unexpected." Lily said confidently.

"Err, good for you Lil. I'll admit you did take me off guard. We usually have these corridors to ourselves at this time of the year." Sirius said uncertainly, obviously confused.

She couldn't help but notice James still smiling behind Sirius, even his eyes participating. Lily couldn't help but let out a small smile back, it was just so infectious.

"Where did this break of routine come from?" James quipped at her.

"When I realised how much more attention you get from doing the unexpected." She joked. "I mean look at you all, stopping on your way to raid the kitchens or some other plan to talk to me?"

Sirius scoffed.

"Oh so do you want us to talk to you more now do you?" Sirius asked innocently.

Not you specifically, Lily thought. Thinking the marauder she'd most like to spend more time with was a certain raven haired one. Not that she didn't spend bucket loads of time with him already with sharing a common room and head duties.

"Hmmm... Actually no I think I take that back. You seem to attempt to converse with me several times a day already." Lily said, feigning annoyance.

With those words she continued to walk to reach my unknown destination. Not wishing to lose the worry free zone she had just previously unlocked. The zone in which Lily wasn't worrying about any exams or any confused feelings she had to any visually impaired 7th year Gryffindor boys.

Lily thought it would get easier when they became friends, but if anything, things had just gotten worse.

"Lily!" James called down the corridor as she faded out of view. A feeling of satisfaction washed over me as he called out to me. "Where in Merlins name are you going?" He asked bewildered as she headed to the main entrance.

Lily just shrugged.

"Not sure, feel free to join me if you want to find out." She called over her shoulder as she threw open the large brass doors.

The sound of the roaring rain exploded in her ears and Lily took in her first proper breath it seemed in ages. Her senses bathing in the smell of rain.

She felt a movement by her shoulder as she stood on the threshold of the castle. She stood still, staring out to the soaked grounds already knowing who had joined her.

"Going out there, huh?" James said, breathing heavily from running to catch up with her. They were alone now after James had abandoned his possie.

Lily snuck a sideways glance at him, his eyes too, were transfixed with the vast grounds being pelted with rain. Small water droplets appeared on his glasses as the splattering of rain rebounded off the pavement.

James finally turned his head to meet her eyes. A large lopsided grin plastered on his face. Lily felt herself smiling as well.

Then all of a sudden she was gone.

Five metres, ten metres, twenty metres: the distance away from him. She felt the water droplets hit her skin and she felt intoxicated. The fresh smell of rain hitting her, drenching her school uniform. The water causing her hair to go a deeper shade of red.

She felt herself spinning in circles like a lunatic but she didn't care. This was the unexpected.

"Evans, Merlins beard what is with you today?" James shouted over the roaring rain. His white, collared shirt was completely drenched and he was obviously finding it difficult to see with the rain coating his glasses. But it didn't seem to matter to him because he was laughing and his black hair was sticking up even more abnormally than normal.

Lily's head was spinning so much she couldn't think straight at all. And this. This.

This was what life was for, moments like these were why everything was worth it.

So why not?

"I'll race you to the lake." Lily yelled.

"What?" He asked, bewildered.

"Come on!" She replied and took off, sprinting. It was sort of freezing but she didn't care one bit.

James was running to catch up with her, being much more athletic than her, he was almost five metres in front of her in a matter of seconds. He was a good ten metres in front of her when they reached the lake.

But he just kept running and ran straight into the body of water with a yell. Lily stood on the bank, laughing her head off. Her hair absolutely plastered to her face.

James surfaced, still a smile etched deep onto his face. Lily ever wanted this moment to end.

As he climbed out of the lake his school shirt hugged him with what seemed to be all it's might. Lily saw the outline of his defined muscles.

Merlin, he was amazing.

"It's freaking freezing out here Evans, you know that right?" James joked.

"I actually hadn't." She replied sarcastically. But she still couldn't get that damn smile off her face.

A moment passed as they just looked at each other. The rain never slowing down one bit.

"You're so damn beautiful." James whispered all of a sudden.

Lily only just caught his words. Caught off guard, Lily froze. This was out of the blue, even for today. She didn't know what to say. "Is that unexpected enough for you?" James quipped, the corners of his mouth turning up once more.

Her mind was whirring. To hell with it, She thought.

"Not quite." She said as she closed the space between them and pulled his head forward. Crashing his lips down on hers. James's eyes nearly left his head in surprise but soon he kissed her back eagerly. Wrapping his arms around her shivering body.

And that was that.

In that moment everything was perfect. And Lily couldn't imagine kissing James any other way but standing there in the freezing cold, covered in mud.

That was the time she learned how much good could come from the unexpected.

(I actually really enjoyed writing this one. Although I admit it seemed a lot better while I was writing then reading it back. But anyway I hope you like it. Tell me what you thought!)
