The previous day had been eventful, with Ross getting into a brawl to protect his maid and close friend, Desmerelda. The lord, a tall and imposing figure, sneered at Ross. "I see you've been up to your usual antics, Poldark. Brawling in the streets, are we?"
Ross remained silent, his face emotionless and cold. The lady, with a disdainful expression, added, "One would think a man of your supposed standing would have better control over his temper."
Desmerelda, unable to contain her anger any longer, snapped, "You have no right to judge him! Ross was defending me, protecting me from harm!"
The lord and lady exchanged amused glances before the lord replied, "Defending a maid, are we? How noble of you, Poldark. But it seems you have a penchant for associating with those beneath your station."
Ross's eyes narrowed, but he maintained his composure. "I suggest you watch your words, my lord. Desmerelda is not just a maid; she is a valued member of my household and a dear friend."
The lady laughed mockingly. "Friendship with a servant? How quaint. I suppose it's the only companionship you can find, given your reputation."
Desmerelda's anger flared, and she stepped forward, her voice trembling with fury. "You know nothing about Ross or the sacrifices he has made for others. Your judgment is baseless and cruel."
Ross, his patience wearing thin, finally spoke. "I have tolerated your insults long enough. I kindly ask you to leave my home."

As the lord and lady departed, the tension in the room lingered. Desmerelda turned to Ross, her eyes filled with concern. "Why didn't you stand up for yourself, Ross? Why did you let them insult you?"
Another servant, who had been silently observing the conversation, spoke up. "They hold a higher status than Mr. Ross. To retort would be to risk his very life."
Ross, his face etched with weariness, took a swig of ale, a rare sight that Desmerelda despised. "Sometimes, Desmerelda, it is wiser to choose our battles. Their words cannot harm me as much as their actions could."
Desmerelda's eyes welled up with tears. "But it's not fair, Ross. You deserve better than this. You deserve respect."
Ross placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "I appreciate your concern, Desmerelda, but I have learned to navigate the treacherous waters of society. My focus lies on protecting those I care about, even if it means enduring insults."

Days turned into weeks, and the incident with the lord and lady became a distant memory. Ross continued to fight for justice and equality, his heart burdened by the weight of societal expectations. Desmerelda, however, couldn't shake off the injustice she had witnessed.
