that night, niola left with her father.
she trusted the triplets to watch over rayne and to make sure nothing bad would happen to her while niola was gone.
before she left, matt agreed to take off her bandages and wipe away the ointment. niola knew that if the burn mark wasn't treated correctly, it could get infected – especially considering the fact that she scratched it on matt's zipper so now it's an open wound.
"where are we going?" niola asks her dad as they exit the neighborhood in his barely-working kia soul.
"normally, i stay the night at random motels." he says. "but i want to give my daughter a nicer place to sleep."
the way he's talking to her seems genuinely kind. it brings back memories from her childhood – before he fucked everything up – when their family was happy. and suddenly his kindness angers her.
"why?" she asks. "you've never given a shit about me before, so why are you acting like you actually care about my wellbeing? for years, you abandoned me to raise rayne without any parental help or money to use."
niola looks at her father and sees that his eyes are clouded with guilt. he glances down at the space between them. for a split second, niola is confused at what he's looking at. then she notices the cupholder that's occupied by a beer can.
he reaches for the drink, but she snatches it before he can.
"if you want to prove that you care about me, get fucking sober." she demands. "you're only abusive when you're intoxicated or on some kind of drug. so if you want to be a better father, cut them out of your life."
at first, his expression is enraged. it looks like he's about to lash out on her. but then he gives up and returns his hand to the steering wheel.
"fine." he says. niola lets out a sigh of relief, thankful that he didn't do anything crazy.
but then, he speeds up and swerves into the left lane and niola is forced to set down the beer so she can hold onto the seat. multiple cars honk at him as he nearly takes out his mirror passing a large truck.
but as soon as he notices that his beer is back in its cupholder, he slows back down and picks it up. he tips the can to niola, "cheers to that, my dear."
she's still trying to recover from the heart attack she nearly had, so she doesn't even fully process what he said before she responds, "you're fucking insane."
he just laughs. "then i guess insanity is in your heritage."
