Chapter 6 ( Gambling is a dangerous thing, especially if you lose)

By KatherineYork7

I saw Angie leaning on her locker all happy.

“Well look at you miss run away from school.”

“Julie, you have no idea what happened, but yesterday was the best day of my life.” She kept smiling and hugged me.

“I’m sorry for ditching you yesterday but I had to. The short story is that Johnny came in front of my house with a picnic basket begging me to go on a date with him. So I called in sick and we drove to the beach. We sat on a blanket he brought and we talked and laughed. It was amazing. He is amazing. He was really sweet and gentle. The best part was when it started to get cold he put his jacket over my shoulders and held me close so I would be warm.”

I had to admit. It had been a hell of a date if what she’s saying really happened.

“And I have another date on Friday.”

“Good for you.”

“Julie if it wasn’t for you I’ve never would have met him. Thank you.”

“Angie I…”

She hugged me again. “And thank you for not freaking out. I heard the voicemail and I know that J.D asked you not to bother me. I should thank him too for convincing you.”

“Yeah about that…” I cleared my throat. “Something happened.”

“With you and J.D?” She looked jumpy.

“Yes.”

“Did you two make out?”

“No.” Ah if only. Or not, what am i thinking?

“You were on a date?”

“Not exactly.” How should I explain this to her. “We kind of had a fight.”

“Why…Oh tell me it’s not because of the voicemail…”

Fuck. “It doesn’t matter anyway. We are okay now.”

My thoughts flied to this morning when he almost kiss me. I’m not sharing that. It's still processing in my head. Maybe it's just my imagination. He could have been trying to say something or..

“Thanks god. Anything else I missed out on?”

“Well Kayla is going on a date with Chris she just doesn’t know that yet.”

“What?”

“I kind of told Chris that she likes him too…”

“Too? You mean he likes her?”

“Oh yeah. A lot. And he told me he is going to ask her out.”

“You got me and her, a boyfriend. Should we return the favor?”

“Oh god, please don’t. I can’t stand another date with Mark or anybody else.”

“Hey guys guess what!” Kayla came running. “I just got asked on a date. By Chris.”

“Congratulations.” Me and Angie both hugged her and Angie mouthed the word matchmaker to me. Oh great. I just needed this nickname too. Like sugar, baby doll and sweeheart weren’t enough.

“Let’s go to class. I’ll tell you all about it.”

I walked out of the school when someone put an arm around me.

“Sugar, going home?”

I put his arm away.

“Yes. I have homework to do.”

“Too bad you’re getting an F.”

“What, why?” I raised a brow.

“Because you can’t finish on time.”

“Oh really and why’s that?”

“Because you’re coming with me.”

“No I’m not.”

“I don’t take no for and answer.”

I hesitated.

“Only if you let me drive the silver beauty.”

“Aston! No, never.”

“Then sorry.”

I knew he would have never taken the offer.

“Okay wait. Do you know to drive?”

Is he going to let me drive? I didn’t see that coming.

“Yeah I got a license. But no car.”

“I’ll let you drive but if you’re not sure…”

“I can drive it?” A big smile came upon my face. I’m going to drive an Aston martin.

“Yeah but…”

I jumped happy grabbing the keys from his hand and I almost hugged him. Almost.

“You are the best.”

I ran towards the car and unlocked it. It’s going to be the best day ever.

After he was in too I asked.

“Where are we going?”

“Just drive a few blocks away from the amusement park.”

“Alright.”

He looked petrified while I started the car. “Relax J.D. I’m not going to let anything happen to the car. It’s too much of a value to me.”

I smiled and started driving.

After twenty minutes of hearing J.D screaming to watch where I’m driving and me not caring I parked in front of a building.

“I love this car.”

“I’m alive.” Was all J.D could say.

“Hah. What was that?”

“I’m alive…You’re driving like a mad person.”

“But did you die? No, so payback’s a bitch.” I winked thinking about the way he drove me the first time. The tables have turned.

“You will twist everything against me.”

“And I’ll love it.” I smiled and got out of the car handing J.D the keys.

“So where exactly are we going?”

“We are going to have some fun. And like I said I have few ideas to sort things out between us.”

I raised a brow.

“What’s in this building?”

“It’s not what’s inside. It’s what's behind the building.”

After we went behind the building I saw nothing. Exactly nothing. There were bushes everywhere and a lot of trees.

“Are you ready to get your ass kicked.”

“What do you mean by that?”

Suddenly the bushes moved.

“Holly crap.” Oh no I didn’t.

“Julie swears? It’s something I haven’t heard so far.”

“Sorry. It’s just that the bloody bushes move.”

“I forgot to tell you. We are playing paintball.”

“I’m sorry what?” Is he out of his mind???

“We are…”

“I heard what you said I just can’t believe it.”

“Well you better cause we are getting dressed, grabbing a bag and killing each other.”

“I would gladly kill you.”

“We’ll see about that.” He smirked. “Let’s make this a little more interesting. The one that dies has to do something for the other person.”

“Fine you want to play, let’s play. But let’s make clear right now. If I lost what do you want?”

“A kiss.”

“Are you sure that’s what you want?” Please say no, say no!

“Yes.”

Oh fuck. I can’t lose. I just can’t. It’s going to be hell if I do. “But if I win?”

“Say what you want.”

“I want…” I thought about it. What is the thing I want? I want him to leave me alone but I can’t ask that. He won’t do it anyways. I need something I want.

“I’ll drive the Aston Martin for a week.”

He made a face.” Are you sure that’s what you want?”

“Hell yeah.”

“Fine you got your self a deal.”

We shook hands and we went to get ready. This is going to be fun. I have to win. For two reasons- I can’t let him kiss me and I want to drive the silver beauty.

I’ve been sitting in the same bushes for thirty minutes and even though my ass hurts my adrenalin is still up. I can’t let my guard down or I’m dead. And that’s one thing I can’t afford to do. The rules were we got three lives. If I’m shot three times I lose. It was that simple. For now I have still three lives but there is no sign of J.D and if we continue hiding we both are going to lose. I shot him once and while he was on the ground I managed to hide. Still no sign of him. I held the gun and slowly crawled few meters.

I saw J.D’s shoe behind a branch. Does he think I’m that stupid to fall for the shoe? He is too tall to be behind the bushes. But I’ll use this against him.

I grabbed a little stone and threw it towards the bushesand shot three times into the bushes. J.D stood up and started shooting towards his bushes. Hah, peace of cake. He took the bate like a fish. I started shooting and hit his back only once. He was down immediately.

“Oh Julie that was…smart.” I could hear him cursing behind the bushes he was hiding.

“Did you really think I would fall for the shoe?” I kneeled behind my bushes aiming at his bush.

“It was worth the shot.” He sighed. “God my back hurts. So how did you know it was a set up?”

“You’re too tall and too big to hide behind that small bush.”

“Oh so you have observed my body.”

I growled. “Oh get over your self.”

“Anyways I have one life now but sugar don’t you think I would let you hit me once more.”

“I don’t underestimate anything. That’s the mistake of getting killed. You got two times.”

“You’re right.” He was laughing. “I underestimated you two times and got shot. But I’m not letting you win.”

I smirked. “I’m surprised by your confidence. Considering I’ll be driving that Aston Martin in no time.”

“Sweetheart, if I was you I would surrender just so I can make out with me.”

“And don’t overestimate yourself.”

“I’m sure you won’t be saying that when I got my tongue inside your mouth.”

Ugh that asshole. I shot three times at his bush.

“Don’t get that anxious to finish this. I still haven’t had the chance to chew a gum. Do you prefer strawberry or mint?”

I am going to kill that bastard and when I do I’ll be the one laughing. I shot five times hoping to hit him.

“There is no hope for you sugar.”

“I am going the treasure the moment you die. And I am that lucky to get to kill you three times.”

“You keep on breaking my heart.”

I could swear he was smirking behind that bush. I looked around for another place to hide. I spot a thick tree but I need to distract J.D so I could run behind it.

“Are you sure you have a heart?”

“Yes, and it beats just for you.”

I rolled my eyes.

“Something tells me you are rolling your eyes.” Now how would he know that?

“ We know each other so little and yet you know when I roll my eyes?”

“I have such an irresistible charm for you not to.” I giggled.

“So I’ve heard.” Good job Julie. Now maybe I got his attention.

“So you like listening rumors about me?”

“Oh yes. They are quite interesting.” For a person who can’t flirt I was doing a hell of a job entertaining him while I was figuring a plan to get to the tree. If I can get there I can shot him one more time and he’s dead.

“Will you share what you’ve heard about me. Maybe I need to confirm or deny something.”

Oh he is almost there…

“Well I’ve heard you have killed somebody but the police never caught you.”

“So, is that why you were scared?”

“No.”

“That’s false by the way.”

I know he would never kill a person and I made it up but he would never know.

“So why were you scared?”

Come on Julie, think of something. I got it. After I say this I wait 10 seconds and run.

“I heard that a girl who falls for you always gets her heart broken.”

One, two, three…

“Are you falling for me?” I could hear confusion in his voice. Four, five...

“You’re too charming for me not to…” seven … “Maybe I’ll consider that offer to kiss you.” Eight…

“You are just saying that to tease me…” Nine…

“Come here and find out…” ten!

I jumped of the bush and ran towards the tree. And then boom. I felt pain on my back but I made it to hide behind the tree.

“Oh shit. This hurts.” I yelled as I tried to cover my self.

“Got you two times sweetie. Now we are even.”

I growled and when I aimed to shoot him he was no longer behind that bush.

“Fuck you J.D.” I was pissed off now. “How did you know?”

“You went from sarcasm to flirt. It was too good to be true. But if I was wrong you could still surrender and kiss me.”

“The only thing you’ll be kissing is the ground.” I fussed and shot two more times behind the bush I though he was hiding.

“I rather kiss you.”

I heard his foot steps but I couldn’t turn and look. Instead of that I used my instinct and shot blindly. And then I heard him growl and stumble on the ground.

YES I DID IT.

I peeked a little and when I saw him on the ground I smirked and walked over to him. “I guess you’re dead.”

Suddenly he raised his gun and shot one time into my stomach. “You guess wrong sugar.”

I was on the ground trying to see pass the pain. He hit me while I was close and it hurts like hell. I 'll probably have bruises.

“What the hell man you already lost.” I yelled.

“Actually you only hit me twice.”

I lifted my head. “What?”

“Yes, you missed. And you are dead now.”

“But I…” I lied on the ground fussing and cursing everything alive in this world. No, no. This can’t be happening to me. I can… He can’t… I feel like crying. “You cheated.”

“No I didn’t. You just underestimated me and thought you hit me.”

“I am going to kill you after I can get up.”

“I’m waiting.” He smirked.

“yeah well it’ll take a while cause I don’t think I can move. My stomach hurts, badly.”

He kneeled next to me and took his helmet off. I did the same.

“I’m sorry.”

“I am sorrier than you.” He glared at me and put his hand on my stomach. I yelled. “Ah it hurts.”

“Let me see.” His face became worried.

“No it’s fine.” I tried to push him away but if I move away from this position I would have to deal with the pain.

“Just stay still.”

I raised my self on the elbows to see what he was up to. That cost me a pinch of pain. I tried to hold the fussing back.

He unbuckled the munitions belt and lifted my shirt.

“Hey what are you doing?”

“I need to see if there are any serious injuries.” He wasn’t smiling. His face expression was dead serious. He lifted the shirt so he could see my stomach. He stopped when he reached my chest. His hand went over my bare skin. Suddenly I felt my skin burn and my muscles went tight.

“If there weren’t these bruises I would have thought that your muscles tighten because of my touch and not because of the pain.”  I blushed when he looked away. He was right. Thanks god he didn’t know the truth. That would have been impossible to explain and he would tease me to infinity.

“Is it bad?” I dared to ask trying to focus on something else except on his amazing gentle touch.

“I can’t tell. But I think there are going to be bruises. Julie I’m so sorry I didn’t mean to hurt you…”

I saw his worry in his eyes so I stopped him there.

“ Hey it was just a game. Cut your self some slack. I probably bruised your back too.”

“But I can move and you can’t.”

“Well I can try.” I tried to get up and even after the huge amount of pain flick in I didn’t give up and stood on my feel holding my self on J.D’s arm. God those firm muscles.

“Come on. I’ll take you back and you’ll get some pain killer there.”

I tried to walk but the pain was too much. “Just give me a moment I need…” He didn’t wait for me to finish. He just lifted me up in his arms and carried me back to where we changed into the gear. I didn’t say anything on the way. I was already feeling embarrassed for him touching me and now this… I better be quiet.

Twenty minutes later I was lying in the back of his car holding an ice pack on my stomach and trying not to focus on the cold, singing “Goodbye” by Fly project.

J.D came back and opened the door on the side where my head was laying and he sat putting my head on his lap. I’ll try not to think on this then. Focus on the cold, Focus on the cold.

“How are you feeling?”

“Cold.” I answered quickly.

“I’m saying this for the fifteenth time. I am so sorry. If you punch me I’ll feel a lot better.”

“I TOLD YOU TO STOP WORRING.” I yelled to get some sense into him. “And I’m not punching you.”

“Come on. I know you want to.”

“I want to but I can’t.” I complained. “Every move hurts like a bitch.” I heard him fuss. I better change the subject or he’ll eat him self alive. I feel guilty.

“ So I lost…” I said and waited for his comment on that. I didn’t dare to look at him. Just kept starring at the window of the car.

“Guess you won’t drive the Aston Martin.” I frowned but I was waiting for another comment.

“What about your prize?” I asked blushing still not looking at him.

“Don’t worry about that now.”

“Are you dropping the whole kiss thing?” I asked not sure what I want the answer to be.

“No I’m definitely not giving up on that. But I don’t think now it’s the right time. But when I’ll ask for that I’ll get it.”

My stomach rolled inside. He was still holding to that idea and now I had to kiss him. I felt relief for the second but I was still going to have to kiss him. Oh boy…

I tried getting up. The pain was almost gone.

“Hey don’t…” J.D started by I interfered.

“I’m fine. Just take me home.”

I didn’t look into his eyes. Instead of that I just leaned into the seat and looked outside of the window. He didn’t say anything and just got into the drivers seat. I knew he looked couple of times on the rear view mirror but I didn’t dare to turn my head.

Everything was spinning in my brain that I needed some time to think and deal with the things that happened today. Too much definitely.

After we drove back to my house I grabbed my bag and walked out without saying anything. He rolled the window down and whistled for me to turn.

“Julie…”

“Yeah J.D.?” That came a little harsh but I was anxious to get home.

“I am just… sorry.”

I forced to smile. “I know. I don’t blame you.” I turned around and got inside. After I closed the door I just breathed hard and went into my room. I cried and smiled and cried again. Don’t know why but, there were too many emotions for me to handle. I just fell asleep.

I felt my mother sitting on the bed and kissing my forehead. I peeked and smiled at her. It was dark in the room so I guess it was already night.

“Honey have you been crying. Your eyes are puffy.”

“It’s from the sleeping mum. But can I not go to school tomorrow?”

“Why sweetie? Are you sick?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“I went paintball today. I got shot.”

“Well…” She laughed. “You have always been a bad loser but not going to school for that…”

“I have bruises on my stomach. It hurts. I think I need to rest.”

She sighed. “Alright. But let me see them.” She turned on the lights and lifted my shirt.

“Honey this is bad.”

“It’s just a bruise mum. Nothing serious.”

“Does it hurt much?”

“Not much.”

“Then honey you can go…”

This woman was impossible to convince for me to miss one day at school.

“The boy who hit me had a bet with me. If I lose I have to kiss him.”

I breathed out and covered my head with a pillow.

“Oh.” She sighed. “Does this boy have a name?”

“It doesn’t matter. But please let me stay home till Friday. It’s only one day. Then I won’t go out during the weekend and I won’t have to see him.”

“You think he’ll forget about the bet till then?”

“I would kill myself if that was possible but no way. He is more stubborn then a rock. But at least I would prepare my self mentally.”

“Alright honey.” She kissed me again and covered me with the blanket. “Do you like him?”

And that question, just span everything around. Did I?

“I’m tired mum. We’ll talk tomorrow.”

“Okay. Good night.”

“Goodnight.”

She turned off the light and left.

So did I? I have no idea. I touched my stomach where he touched me. And then I remembered how his eyes were glued to my lips and I almost kiss him. We were so close. My heart started pounding and I felt my stomach turning upside down.

I can’t define the feeling. It would probably be best if I go to bed. I’ll think tomorrow. And with that everything went blank.

Well there you go :)) I hope you'll like it. Do you think J.D will ask for his prize soon?

Believe me even more intersting things will happen. This doesn't end soon ;) Love you darlings.
