Homecoming
by Belarmino, Jem Xyrel Fenela R.

Does everyone you see really exist?

Once upon a time, there lived a couple in a place plagued by constant war. Despite the turmoil, the love between Somsak, a robust and humorous man, and Kulap, a young woman of captivating beauty, endured. Every day, they celebrated as if it were their last.

The couple explored different places, such as the ruins of Sukhothai, savoring delicacies that left a lasting impression. Temporarily residing in a small wooden house, they saved for their dream home near the Mae Nam Khong river, named after "Mother's of Water."

One morning, a high-ranking official mandated that every family must have a representative for the ongoing war between Siam and Yamato. Somsak, driven by love for his country, resolved to serve and secure a safe future for his family, now expecting a child.

Before departing, they discovered Kulap was three months pregnant. Uncertain of the child's gender, they prepared names for both scenarios. Kulap expressed her desire for a baby girl, suggesting the name "Anchara," while Somsak envisioned a son named "Anurak."

With a portrait and an amulet from Kulap, Somsak left for war. A year later, as the war concluded, he eagerly returned to his family. Upon arrival, he found Kulap and their baby boy, Anurak, peacefully asleep, validating his sacrifices.

In the morning, the couple shared stories. Kulap recounted her challenges giving birth and raising Anurak alone. Overwhelmed with regret, Somsak promised never to leave her side. They decided to leave the village and settle near the river as planned.

Living peacefully near the river, Anurak thrived with his parents' love and care. One day, Sukhon, Somsak's cousin, visited, offering a flower garland called Phuang Malay as a tribute. Shockingly, Sukhon revealed that Kulap and Anurak had passed away.

Distraught, Somsak investigated, recalling a village superstition to differentiate humans from Phis. Testing Kulap with the superstition, Somsak was relieved to see her as a human. However, caught in the act, Somsak learned of a heartbreaking truth.

Kulap confessed that during the war, she gave birth to twins, a boy and a girl. The girl passed away, and Kulap's parents took her away. Alone, Kulap delivered Anurak, unaware of her parents' actions. Both Kulap and Anurak died alone in their old house.

The couple decided to fulfill their wedding vow before Kulap's departure to heaven. With the monk's assistance, they held a poignant ceremony, sealing their promises with a kiss. Kulap's joyful smile marked her departure with the wind.

Kulap and Anurak found peace in heaven. Somsak, after grieving, thanked the Gods and offered Loy Krathong in the river. Grateful for the time they spent together, Somsak approached Kulap's parents, expressing gratitude for caring for Achara, the baby girl left in their care.

In Achara, Somsak found beauty and tranquility, a testament to Kulap's enduring presence.
