Somewhere in the field. Some of the Survey Corps members are on standby. Mikasa watches over Eren, who remains unconscious in a cart. Levi finds Petra's body. Jean and Armin load bodies into a cart.
Jean: This is the part I never get used to.
Armin: No one does.
Jean: How are my friends going to die? How am I going to die? It's all you can think about.
Armin: I try not to dwell on it. If I pictured how I'm going to die, I probably wouldn't be able to fight.
Jean: Yeah. You're right.
Connie and Sasha feed the horses.
Connie: How long will I stay alive?
Sasha: You're alive now, aren't you?
Connie: For now. I'm not like Eren that can probably come back from the died with his powers.
Sasha: Isn't that a good thing? You're alive. Plus if Eren can died and come back, maybe he can bring us back to life if we die.
Connie: Can you say that in front of the bodies of those who aren't? Ngh... I might not be able to go home anymore...
Sometime later, in the field. The collection of the dead has finished.
Peer: We're almost done. There were about five dead that we couldn't recover.
Erwin: Not even a part of them?
Peer; They're the only ones we couldn't due to the Titans. It's probably best for the families that we not bring those back.
Erwin: Say they're MIA.
Peer: Yes, sir. We saw several Titans near the forest, but none are headed this way as of yet.
Erwin: We're moving out now. Tell all the squads.
Peer: Yes, sir.
Dieter: I cannot accept this, Commander Erwin!
Peer: Hey, you...!
Dieter: We should recover them! Ivan's body was right in front of us!
Peer: There was a Titan right next to him! It could result in another casualty!
Dieter: If they attack, we can just defeat them!
Jurgen Ivan's an old friend. We're from the same town! I know his parents. If nothing else, I'd like to bring him home!
Peer: Don't be selfish!
Levi: Squabbling kids?
Peer: Lance Corporal Levi...
Levi: If you confirmed he's dead, that's enough.
Whether you have the body, dead is dead. It won't change anything.
Jurgen: No...
Erwin: We'll say Ivan and the others went missing. That's my final decision. Give it up.
Erwin and Levi walk off.
Dieter: Ahh... Don't the two of you... have any human feelings at all?!
Peer: Hey, Dieter! You're going too far!

In the field. The Survey Corps is returning to the city with the dead.
Soldier: Ah... Titans!
Mikasa: Ah...
Dieter and Jurgen ride in front of the Titans with the body of Ivan.
Peer: That's... Dieter! That fool...
Peer shoots a red smoke flare into the air.
Soldier: The rear line has sighted Titans!
Erwin: Onward at full speed!
Levi: I don't see any tall trees or buildings. Fighting out here will be difficult.
Erwin: We're better off outrunning them until we reach the walls.

Levi pulls back. Dieter and Jurgen continue to flee from the Titans.

A Titan swats at Dieter. He dodges the attack but drops Ivan's body.

Jurgen is captured by a Titan.

Dieter turns back and attacks the Titan holding Jurgen. The other Titan runs toward the Survey Corps members up ahead.
Armin: They're going to catch us!
Jean: Do we have to fight?!
Armin: 3D Maneuver Gear has limited utility in open areas. And look...
More Titans come running from the surrounding fields.
Armin: They just keep coming!
Jean: Ahh... Then what do we do?
Armin: Ngh... We...
Jean: Ah...
Jurgen struggles in the Titan's mouth.

Jurgen is eaten by the Titan. Dieter moves to attack the Titan but is caught.

Mikasa kills the Titan.
Mikasa: Ngh...
Dieter: Ahh... Ah... Ah...
The cart with the bodies continues onward.
Soldiers: No! They'll reach us! I'll get behind them! I'll draw their attention, then you --
Levi: Stop! Just abandon the bodies. They'll reach us.
Soldier: Ah... B-But...!
Levi: In the past, many bodies haven't made it back. These guys aren't anything special.
Soldiers: Ah... Are we doing this? Huh...? Are we really doing it?! Ah...

The soldier opens the back of the cart, dropping a body.

The soldier releases other bodies. One is trampled over by the Titan.

Petra's body is the last to be thrown from the cart.
Soldier: Okay! Keep going!
The soldiers continue on, away from the Titans. Sometime later, in the field. The soldiers are regrouping.
Soldier: As soon as we know where we are, we will depart. Stay alert! We have to slightly alter our route to the east...
Levi approaches Dieter.
Dieter: Ah... Lance Corporal Levi... I...
Levi removes something from his pockets.
Dieter: Ah...
Levi: This proves that they were alive... to me, at least.
Dieter: Ahh...
Dieter holds the Survey Corps patch in his hands.
Levi: This was Ivan's.
Dieter begins to cry.
Dieter: Ah... Lance Corporal...
Levi gets back on his horse and rides away.
Soldier: We're leaving!
In a dream. A young Eren carries a load of firewood on his back.
Y.Mikasa: Eren, you should stop considering the Survey Corps.
Y.Eren: Ah... What? You're going to tell me they're stupid, too?
Y.Mikasa: That isn't it...
Bells begin to ring throughout the city.
Y.Eren, Y.Mikasa: Ah...
Y.Eren: The Survey Corps is back! The front gate's opening! Let's go, Mikasa! The heroes are back!
Y.Mikasa: Ah...
Eren and Mikasa make their way to the gates. Eren watches with excitement but sees that the soldiers are wounded and exhausted. As more and more soldiers are come they start to look more damage, then every one round Eren started to decay.
Y.Eren: Ngh... Ah... Ah!
All the soldiers and people all turn and look at Eren and pointing at him. Eren turn his head to see Mikasa had also decayed and was pointing at him.
Everyone pointing at Eren: You did this, you kill us.
Y.Eren: No, that not true!
Everyone: You killed use all.
Eren close his eyes and he holds his head and scram telling them to all stop.
Y. Eren: Stop it, Stoooop!!
Eren then open his eyes to see he was in a black void. He look at himself to see he no longer a kid.
Eren: Zarathos? Ar-are you there?
Eren got no answer as he look rounded.
Eren: Hello!
Red eyes then appeared in from of Eren looking at him.
Eren: Ahh!
As Eren was looking into these eyes something would come flying at him landing at his feet. As Eren look down to see what it was the head of Zarathos with a knife in it.
Eren: Zar- Zarathos!?
Eren look back at the eyes as see they got a little closer to him.
Eren: Ah?!
Eren would take a step back as the eyes looked at him. After a second the eyes started coming closer to Eren.
Eren: Hay stay back, Ah!
Before the eyes could reach Eren, Eran wakes up.
Mikasa: Eren!
Eren: Ah! Ah... Ahh...
Mikasa: Eren.
Eren: Ngh...
Mikasa: You shouldn't get up. Rest.
Eren: What about the Female Titan?
Mikasa: It got away.
Eren: Why? What about the others? What about the plan?
Mikasa: It failed. Rest for the time being.
Eren: Ahh... What is this? Did you save me again?
Mikasa: Ngh... We're almost to the walls.
In the town. The soldiers return. Townspeople wait in the streets.
Men: Aren't there fewer than there were this morning? Man... Far fewer... Another disaster.

Eren struggles to sit up.

Mikasa: Eren, just bear with it.

Eren sees two children, watching the soldiers come home with excitement as he did when he was younger.
Boy: So cool! The Survey Corps is so awesome!
They got the crap kicked out of them, and they still fight!
Eren: Ah... Ahh... Ngh...
Mikasa: Ahh...
Petra's father approaches Levi.
Petra.Father: Lance Corporal Levi! My daughter is in your squad. I'm Petra's father. Before she finds me, I want to talk to you. She sent me this letter. She mentioned that you respected her abilities enough to let her join your squad, that she was going to devote herself to you. Well, I guess she's too starry-eyed to consider how her father feels! Haha! Well, as her father, I think it's too early for her to marry. She's still so young, with so much to experience...
Townspeople call out to Erwin.
Townspeople: Crowd Commander Erwin! Answer us! Did this expedition learn enough to justify the number of dead?! Do you think the dead have no regrets?!
Armin: (Narration) The expenses and casualties from the expedition were more than enough to discredit the faction that had supported the Survey Corps.
Eren sobs. Mikasa squeezes his hand.
Mikasa: What do you remember before passing out.
Eren: I was fighting the female titan, then... then. I-I can't remember what happened after that.
Armin: (Narration) As those responsible, including Erwin, were summoned to the capital, it was decided that Eren was to be handed over.
