"When I got to the shore, I tried calling you guys, but, uh.." Eddie drank from his water before continuing, "my walkie was busted, man. Drenched. So, uh, I did the thing that I do now, apparently." he smiled sarcastically, "I ran. Left Perry along the way."
"Stop saying that." June argued, "I chose that, don't blame yourself for everything."
Nancy stood next to her, "Do you know what time this was? The attack?"
"Yeah, no, I.. I know exactly what time it was." Eddie took his watch off and threw it to Nancy, "My walkie wasn't the only thing that got soaked."
While Nancy read the numbers on the watch, June tilted her head in confusion at the boy behind her, Dustin was pacing around, not paying any attention to anything that was being said.
"Same time our flashlights went kablooey." Robin pointed out.
Steve crossed his arms. "Which means what, exactly?"
"That that surge of energy was Vecna attacking Patrick." Nancy answered.
Robin sighed, "Well, we're one step closer. We know how Vecna attacks."
"And where he attacks from." Lucas added.
June exchanged glances with Eddie, the two were the only ones not present when they searched the house, meaning they didn't know what happened there.
"So now we just need to sneak into his lair in the Upside Down and drive a stake through his heart." Max concluded like what she was saying was nothing.
"And we're sure that will kill him?" June questioned, Max asked what she meant, so she elaborated, "I mean," she looked at Eddie, "you told me you can only defeat Vecna when you throw a twenty. How do we know this is the twenty?"
"She's got a point." Robin smiled softly at the brunette, "Does this guy even have a heart?"
Steve furrowed hie eyebrows, "A stake? Is he like a vamp? Is he a vampire?"
"It was a metaphor." Max sassed, she shrugged her shoulders.
"A bullet should work on him, right?" Eddie suggested, making June widen her eyes in fear.
She was still terrified of even touching a gun, let alone shooting one, "Why don't we just chop his head off?" Lucas nodded in agreement, he wanted to imply the same.
"Yeah, I'd say all of the above, but we can't do any of that 'til we find a way into the Upside Down." Nancy reasoned.
The redhead looked at the black girl, "Can you get your powers to do that?"
"I can do that?" June furrowed her eyebrows, she was finding out more about herself every day and it wasn't even by the people she'd expected.
"Yeah, everything would be way easier." Steve turned to Eddie who opened the bag of pretzels, "We had this girl. She had superpowers, alike to June's."
"Superpowers." Eddie cut him off, "Yeah, you mentioned her." his eyes traced from Steve to June and from June to behind her, "Hey, uh, Henderson's not, uh, cursed, is he?"
Steve assured him, "Cursed? No, no. He's fine. Mental? Absolutely."
"Boom!" Dustin yelled, startling everyone. His voice echoed a few times before he pointed at Steve, "Bada.. bada.. boom. I was right. Skull Rock was north."
Steve crossed his arms, "Seriously? You're serious?" Dustin hummed in confirmation, "This is Skull Rock. Okay?" Dustin hummed again, "You're totally, absolutely, 100% wrong! Right now!"
"Yes." Dustin confirmed, "And no."
June glanced at Eddie with a raised brow, he was already looking back at her, just as confused. Seeing his face, the brunette had to hide her snickers.
Steve ran his hand over his face, "Oh, my God."
Dustin took a compass out of his bag, he held it up in his hand, "This compass worked correctly when we left the Wheelers'. It was correct when we got in the car on Curly, but it started to slip the further east we went. Now it's way off. When I was leading us here, I wasn't wrong. The compass was."
"So you're just using faulty equipment. You're still wrong." Steve argued.
"Except it isn't faulty." Dustin held his finger up, "Do you remember what can affect a compass?"
"An electromagnetic field." June answered, she was confused by her own answer. Such a force was practically impossible, "But it'd have to be extremely strong, how's that possible?"
Dustin widened his eyes, she couldn't have known, could she? Thing is, June just read a lot of things, once when she was bored, she read a whole book about said electromagnetic fields. It was the most boring thing ever, but it stuck with her.
"Sorry. I must've skipped that class." Robin raised her eyebrows.
"When there's an electromagnetic field around that's so powerful, it can change the course of a compass." she explained.
Dustin nodded, "So either there's some super big magnet around here, or.."
"There's a gate." Lucas concluded.
"But we're nowhere near the lab." Nancy reasoned.
The lab. It sounded terrifying to Juniper, knowing she probably lived there without having known it. Yeah, she knew the Hawkins Laboratory, but she and her friends saw it more as something that - when it gets abandoned - could be used as a place to chill.
"But what if, somehow, there's another gate?" Dustin pondered, "A gate that we don't know about. It'd have to be smaller. Way less powerful."
"Snack-size gate." Robin's raspy voice pointed out.
Steve still didn't know shit, "How? Why?"
"No idea. All I know is that something, or someone, is causing this disturbance and the last time we've seen anything like it, it was a gate." Dustin enunciated, switching glances with June in the middle of his sentence. He couldn't help but wonder if her finding out about having powers had anything to do with this, "And I hope it is because then we'd have a way to Vecna. And a shot at freeing Max from this curse."
He started walking away from the group, Steve stopping him to ask where he was going, "Eddie's still a wanted man. June's just been beaten up. We can't just go for a hike in the woods."
"This little steel capsule might be the key to saving both Max and Eddie." Dustin countered, holding up the compass, "What say you, Eddie the Banished?"
Eddie exchanged glances with June before answering, he wanted to make sure she was okay and agreeing to this, "I say you're asking me to follow you into Mordor, which, if I'm totally straight with you, I think is a really bad idea. But, uh, the Shire.. the Shire is burning"
Dustin jumped up and down while Eddie stood up, June's eyes plastered on him, thinking about the reference he just made, "So Mordor it is."
He grabbed the black girl's hand to lead her to where Dustin stood, Robin gave Steve a knowing smirk, but Steve only rolled his eyes, wondering what Mordor is.
"You did not just make a Lord of the Rings reference." June gasped, still in shock. Eddie looked back, smiling like crazy before winking at her, "Can you marry me?"
"I'm kind of busy being hunted right now, but when that is over. Absolutely." Eddie sarcastically replied. He ran back to grab his stuff from under Skull Rock, Steve telling him to hurry.
He ran after June with full hands, but Juniper had already joined the fellow ladies in their track.
"How did you even know about the compass and the gate?" Robin asked out of the blue, she knew of the dumb reputation the girl had, but she thought that maybe, like everything else, it could be lies.
"Oh, I read." June gave her an innocent smile, she was limping, because of an injury in her side, but it was doable.
Dustin sped up the pace, causing the rest to have to run behind him. The brunette was in a lot of pain running, but this was so much more important than just a few stings.
"Dustin? Can you slow down? Dustin?" Eddie called after the boy sprinting away. Max and Lucas followed him and after that Robin, Juniper, Steve and Nancy.
He yelled back to the group, "I think we're getting close!"
June tried to look around, but all she saw was trees and even those were hard to see in the dark. Yet her surroundings did look familiar.
She bumped into Robin when they came to a sudden stop, June put her hands up, "Sorry."
Robin didn't mind, but her attention wasn't on the girl, it was on Dustin and Eddie staring into the distance.
"Oh, man." Steve panted, now too seeing where they were, "You gotta be shitting me."
"Yeah. I thought these woods were familiar." Eddie remarked.
June saw a light on in a big house on the right, she recognized it as her house. Even from this distance, she could still see the size of the building. She couldn't help but wonder what her parents were doing now, if they were looking for her or even worried in the slightest.
"Lover's Lake." Robin added, recognizing the lake too.
"This is confounding." Dustin mentioned.
Max shared his questioning state, "There's a gate in Lover's Lake?"
"Wasn't that where Patrick died?" June thought out loud, just before she lost consciousness, she'd seen a figure falling back in the water. Later, when Eddie told her Patrick died, she put two and two together.
"Whenever the Demogorgon attacked, it always left an opening." Nancy explained, "Maybe Vecna's the same way."
Steve looked at his ex, "Yeah, only one way to find out."
June caught on to what he was implying, "Is that boat somewhere near?" she asked Eddie, who immediately reacted in showing them to the boat.
While being lead to the boat, June took the opportunity to catch up with the leading brunet. His eyes lit up when she stopped beside him.
"So I was thinking," she started with a knowing grin plastered on her face, "we never discussed you kissing my cheek."
She watched how his mood shifted to an embarrassed one, he tried looking away from her, but her continuous stares made him look back with a color on his cheeks.
June saw the boat standing under the tarp not too far away, "I mean, you can keep doing it, though." she concluded before upping her pace and leaving Eddie stranded with his jaw opened.
Robin came standing next to Eddie with a little shake of her head, "You too are so oblivious, it's crazy." she then followed June to the boat.
She took the tarp off of the boat and let Steve and Eddie put it in the water, they were bickering during doing so, but they managed.
Eddie offered his hand to June who took it with a smile, she went to sit all the way on the other side of the boat, closely being followed by Robin who just used the guys their shoulders to lean on.
Eddie stepped into the boat next, offering a hand to Nancy as well. When Dustin tried to step into the boat, he stopped him, "Hey, hey, hey, you trying to sink us? This thing only holds four people tops, okay?"
"It's better this way, okay? You guys stay here with Max." Nancy agreed, "Keep an eye out for trouble."
"You keep an eye out." Dustin countered, his voice becoming way higher than it usually is, "It's my god damn theory."
Robin sided with Nancy, "You heard Nance."
"Who put her in charge?" Dustin complained.
"I did."
"Hey, look at it from the bright side. The guard is a very important job." June tried to keep it positive, "Think about D&D. Not everyone can come, because the people that stay back have a more important role."
Nancy nodded, handing him the compass. Dustin took it and stepped back unwillingly. Steve threw his bag at him after that, "Hey, there you go."
He pushed the boat off the shore and stepped in, "You said four!" Dustin whined.
Steve whispered, "Sorry."
They paddled away onto the water, "Bedtime at nine, kiddos!" Robin called after them, waving dramatically, "Miss you already!"
"Hey, Robin, I think it's already past nine." June noted.
Robin just shrugged it off with a laugh, not caring about that. She found herself hilarious, the logistics behind it didn't matter.
