Chapter 35: Tyler's Gun

Por espinosa1989

I didn't get enough sleep last night. Tyler keeping a gun and Bryce showing up dead is one hell of a coincidence. Knowing that brought back nightmares from Spring Fling. In my nightmare, it was the same when he pointed the gun at both me & Clay, only this time he pulls the trigger. I then wake up realizing that it was all a nightmare. I'm having breakfast with dad, Valerie, & Bridgette.

Valerie: Hannah. Hannah!

I snap out of my concentration.

Hannah Baker: Sorry. What were you saying?

Andy Baker: We were asking how you're doing, now that Bryce is...

My dad & Valerie can't even say dead because Bridgette is sitting with us.

Hannah Baker: I'm still processing it.

Valerie takes out her phone and begins scrolling.

Valerie: My god.

Andy Baker: What is it?

Valerie: Bridgette, why don't you get ready for school.

Bridgette: Okay.

Bridgette takes her bowl and puts it in the sink and then runs off to our room.

Hannah Baker: Sending her and not me to our room can only mean something bad.

Valerie: I was reading the Evergreen County Register.

Hannah Baker: The same Evergreen County Register that called me a vindictive & jealous suicidal girl during my trial?

Andy Baker: Hannah.

Hannah Baker: What? They did. I've read the columns about my trial.

Valerie: They're saying that Bryce Walker was shot.

Hannah Baker: What?

Okay, now I'm freaking out! First they find Bryce's dead body, Tyler kept a gun and decides to get rid of it because he doesn't need it anymore, & now the Register is saying that Bryce was shot?

Andy Baker: He was shot?

Valerie: Who would do something like that?

Andy Baker: Well, he did make a lot of enemies.

Valerie: Do you think it had something to do with what happened at the Homecoming game?

Andy Baker: It was the last time anyone saw him alive. Good thing Hannah wasn't there. Right, honey? Hannah?

I wasn't paying attention. I was still procession that maybe Tyler was the one who killed Bryce. If it was Tyler who shot Bryce, then everything we did to help out would've been for nothing.

Hannah Baker: I need to get ready for school.

Clay steps outside his house to call Tyler when he spot a police squad car. Clay tries calling Tyler but it takes him to voice mail.

Clay Jensen: Tyler. Clay again. Um, I'm not sure if you got my messages last night, just... making sure you know I'm picking you up today and we can take care of everything. Uh... I'll see you soon.

Back inside the Jensen house, Matt & Laine are in the kitchen preparing for a visit from the social worker to finalize Justin's adoption.

Laine Jensen: Do the flowers make it seem like we're trying too hard?

Matt Jensen: A little. Are we flower people? I feel like we're not flower people. We should just be us.

Clay steps back inside through the back door.

Matt Jensen: Hey, kiddo. You ready?

Clay Jensen: For?

Laine Jensen: Justin's home visit. The social worker is going to be here any minute.

Clay completely forgot about the social worker.

Clay Jensen: That's today. Awesome. Do I have to be here for it?

Laine Jensen: Clay, it's very important that we show them that we're providing Justin with a happy, healthy home environment.

Matt Jensen: Are you... You still feel good about all this, right?

Clay Jensen: Oh, yeah. No, totally. I'm good. I... just had something I had to do. I'll figure it out. Happy, healthy, got it. All good.

As Clay was making his way upstairs, Justin comes down with his phone to break some news to Clay.

Clay Jensen: They are particularly high strung today.

Justin Foley: Hey, Bryce was shot.

Clay Jensen: What?

Justin Foley: Yeah. The Evergreen County Register reported it this morning.

Justin hands over his phone to Clay so he can read the article for himself. Now he's freaking out. Clay hasn't told Justin that Tyler kept a gun, yet.

Clay Jensen: Shot... with a gun.

Justin Foley: It's fucked up, right?

Clay Jensen: (Stammers) Don't say anything to them yet.

Justin Foley: Believe me...

Clay Jensen: I just... have to, uh... make a call real quick.

Clay calls Tony to inform him that he won't be able to pick up Tyler for school and deal with the gun because of the social worker. Tyler steps out of his house and enters Tony's car.

Tyler Down: Where's Clay?

Tony Padilla: He had a family thing.

Tyler Down: He said he was going to pick me up and we were gonna take care of everything.

Tony Padilla: Well, I'm picking you up and we are taking care of everything, so...

Tyler Down: I mean, I thought Clay was coming.

Tony Padilla: Clay's not fucking coming, okay? So where's the damn gun, Tyler?

Tyler Down: I don't have it. Look, I'll give it to Clay after school, all right? I promise.

Tony Padilla: You don't have it?

Tyler Down: Not with me, no.

Tyler opens up his backpack.

Tyler Down: Look.

Tony sees for himself that the gun is not there.

Tony Padilla: So, where is it?

Tyler Down: Uh... It's... hidden. In a safe place.

Tony Padilla: Why do you want to get rid of it today?

Tyler Down: Because... I'm done with it.

I get to school and the first thing I do is go looking for Jessica. I find her at her locker as I have to tell her the bad news.

Hannah Baker: Did you hear about Bryce?

Jessica Davis: Yeah, he was shot.

Hannah Baker: It gets worse. (Whispering) Tyler kept a gun.

Jessica Davis: WHAT?

Hannah Baker: Shhhhhh.

Thank god, no one heard. Geesh.

Jessica Davis: He kept one?

Hannah Baker: He told Tony last night after me & Alex left. Tony called Clay and he told me about it.

Jessica Davis: You don't think...?

Hannah Baker: I hope to god it's not Tyler who did it.

Jessica Davis: Fuck. First he thinks that me & Justin did it...

Hannah Baker: Yeah, about that. Justin told me about it. Did Clay & Ani really thought you guys did it?

Jessica Davis: And Ani thought that I was hooking up with Bryce. It's kinda my fault, I didn't tell her enough when I said that I thought of someone bad for me when I... you know.

Hannah Baker: Maybe you should've told her sooner.

Jessica Davis: Yeah. So what are we going to do about Tyler?

Clay told me last night that he was gonna pick up Tyler for school and deal with the gun. But then I see Tony & Tyler arriving together. Tony tells me that Clay & Justin had to meet with the social worker for Justin's adoption. Ani then approaches us as we're watching Tyler at his locker. Usually when she's here that means that Clay brought her, but we don't see him.

Ani Achola: Hey.

Tony Padila: Where's Clay?

Ani Achola: He's still with the social worker. What's going on?

Tony Padilla: Tyler came up to me last night and said he had a gun that he needed to get rid of.

Hannah Baker: And this morning, we find out...

Ani Achola: Bryce?

Tony Padilla: Yeah.

Ani Achola: Jesus. You don't think he would... But he's been doing so well.

Tony Padilla: Well, we thought so.

Ani Achola: I just don't believe it.

Hannah Baker: I don't want to believe it, too.

Ani Achola: Not us. And not Tyler. I mean, what reason would he have?

Tony Padilla: Did he have a reason last time?

Hannah Baker: We never did find why.

Tyler is getting his stuff from his locker as we see him take out a brown paper bag, and it is not empty.

Hannah Baker: Oh, my god.

Ani Achola: What the fuck?

Tony Padilla: I got this.

Tony begins to walk towards Tyler...

Priya Singh: Mr. Padilla?

Then Dr. Singh appears out of nowhere.

Priya Singh: Welcome back. We haven't seen you in a long time.

She's got a point. Tony hasn't been to school lately. He said that he had to help out with his family's garage.

Priya Singh: Care to join me in my office and explain why?

Dr. Singh starts walking to her office as Tony now begins to follow her, but not before telling us...

Tony Padilla: Don't let him out of your sight.

Tony leaves with Dr. Singh. Unfortunately, I don't have Tyler for my 1st class. Fortunately, Ani does.

As school is already underway, Clay & Justin were still meeting with the social worker. After they were finished with the social worker, they head for the outhouse to get ready for school.

Justin Foley: We gotta stop at the ATM on the way.

Clay Jensen: What? No. Why?

Justin Foley: Because Jessica, she needs a fancy date after everything. Dude, what is wrong with you today? We have a free pass for once.

Clay Jensen: Tyler asked me and Tony to get rid of another gun. Because he was quote "done with it." And we think he might have it at school.

Justin Foley: Fuck. You don't think that he...

Clay Jensen: Look, I don't want to, but... Hannah & Jessica are watching him next period, then Jessica has him for the last but we gotta get there.

Me & Jessica have Tyler for 2nd period. We've both been keeping an eye on him while we wait for Clay & Justin who have yet to arrive. Class was then over. We both watch Tyler together as he closes his locker and begins to head off as we follow him. Tyler then drops his text book as he goes to pick it up as me & Jessica acts like we're on our phones. Tyler turns to look at us and we act like we're showing each other something on our phones. Then, Tyler just stops as we see Monty walking by with Charlie St. George and 2 other jocks as they just walk through Tyler, even staring him down. Tyler just froze in fear. After they were gone, Tyler walked away.

Hannah Baker: Did you see that?

Jessica Davis: What?

Hannah Baker: He just... completely froze. When Monty passed by. It's not the first time that's happened.

Jessica Davis: What do you think that means?

Hannah Baker: I don't know. But it seems familiar.

Jessica Davis: I have him next period with Alex. We'll keep a eye on him.

Hannah Baker: Okay.

Next class, Jessica sits next to Alex as she explains the situation to him while watching over Tyler.

Alex Standall: Why would you even say that?

Jessica Davis: It's not me saying it. Both Clay & Tony think he might've done it.

Alex Standall: I don't wanna hear this.

Jessica Davis: It's not that hard to believe.

Alex Standall: Tyler's my friend. He's in a good place right now. If you hadn't done such a half-assed job with him all summer, you'd fucking know that.

Jessica Davis: How long are you going to be mad at me for?

Alex Standall: I don't know. How long was I love with you? At least that long.

Jessica Davis: Alex...

Alex Standall: Look, Jess...

Jessica Davis: No, Alex. Look.

They both see Tyler reaching in for his backpack. For a minute, they started to think that maybe he's reaching in for a gun. But it wasn't, he reached for a ruler. They were relieved. Clay & Justin finally arrive to school as Ani meets up Clay during robotics class with Tyler in attendance.

Clay Jensen: I haven't had a chance to talk to him. I just got here.

Ani Achola: You don't think he could've done anything to Bryce?

Clay Jensen: I don't know. I just don't know. I thought he was getting better.

Ani Achola: But you think he's capable of killing?

Clay Jensen: Don't you? You thought he was yesterday.

Ani Achola: I mean, yesterday we thought Jess was, too, but we were wrong.

Clay Jensen: I know that at one time he definitely was. I saw it in his eyes.

Ani Achola: But then he got better. You know he did. I saw it, too.

Clay Jensen: No, you're right. What if after all we've done, or I guess tried to do... what if it's right back where we started?

Ani Achola: I want to believe that people can change. I know they can.

Clay Jensen: You're thinking of Bryce?

Ani Achola: I'm thinking of people. Not everything is about Bryce.

Clay Jensen: Well, it kind of is, though, isn't it? At this moment.

Tyler Down: Excuse me. Bathroom? Thank you.

Tyler gets up and leaves for the bathroom as he takes his backpack with him.

Clay Jensen: Could I also, uh... Thanks.

Clay was also excuse as he goes to follow Tyler. Clay follows Tyler as he head outside of school much to Clay's confusion and goes across the street. Clay then hears Tyler unzipping his backpack and thinks that he's gonna take out his gun.

Clay Jensen: Tyler...

But instead, Clay walks in on him peeing in the bushes.

Tyler Down: The hell! Clay?

Tyler zips up his pants.

Tyler Down: What are you doing out here?

Clay Jensen: I saw you leave robotics and thought maybe we could talk. I didn't realize you were coming all the way out here to, you know...

Tyler Down: I don't... like using the bathrooms.

Clay Jensen: Oh. Yeah, okay. I mean, they're kind of gross, I guess.

Tyler Down: What do you wanna talk about?

Clay Jensen: Well, I just wanted to make sure that the plan was still for you to give it to me?

Tyler Down: Yeah. Yeah, that's the plan.

Clay Jensen: So... all good.

Tyler Down: Cool, okay.

Clay Jensen: But why'd you bring your bag?

Tyler Down: Huh?

Clay Jensen: I mean, if you just came out here to pee, then why bring your bag?

Tyler Down: Uh, just... people steal shit... so...

Clay Jensen: Yeah.

It's now lunch time. Clay & Justin finally showed up as I meet up with them. Me, Clay, Ani, & Justin are in the rec room as we watch over Tyler who's in the computer room.

Justin Foley: Okay, if he has it and we get it from him, what then? Do we turn him in?

Clay Jensen: First we make sure he doesn't hurt himself or anyone else, and then... we'll figure it out.

Justin Foley: Do you think you can do that again? Do you think you should?

We all turn to look at Tyler and he notices that we're watching over him.

Ani Achola: Well, let's just pray it's a non-issue.

Hannah Baker: Okay, but how can we know for sure?

Zach Dempsey: Yeah. How can we know?

Zach comes crutching in to join us as he takes a seat.

Zach Dempsey: And, um... why aren't we calling the police?

We now look at Justin.

Hannah Baker: Seriously, Justin?

Clay Jensen: You told him?

Justin Foley: Dude, he's, like, part of this.

Hannah Baker: He's been pretty clear he doesn't want to be part of it.

Zach Dempsey: Guys... We should call the cops.

Hannah Baker: Zach, no!

Clay Jensen: Do you really think that? Or is this your chance to do what you wanted to do all along?

Zach Dempsey: Look, forget about Spring Fling. Forget about everything, okay? Somebody shot Bryce. Tyler has a gun.

Clay Jensen: Look, I know. But he didn't have any reason to kill Bryce, did he?

Hannah Baker: No, he didn't.

Zach Dempsey: Actually... he did.

Zach tells us that he ran into Tyler this past summer when Tyler was waiting for Justin during Summer School. The dumbass told Tyler that Bryce saw what happened at Spring Fling.

Hannah Baker: Zach, you fucking moron!

Clay Jensen: Why would you tell him that?

Zach Dempsey: Because he was... I don't know why.

The bell rings. We see Tyler grabbing his stuff and leave.

Clay Jensen: No cops.

Clay gets up and follows Clay in the hallways. Clay loses Tyler within the crowd in the hallway but then finds him as he follows him in the yearbook and into the dark room.

Tyler Down: Hey, Clay.

Clay Jensen: Hey, Tyler.

Tyler Down: You can look if you want to.

Clay slowly approaches Tyler's backpack and searches it. No gun. Another student enters the dark room as he look through his pictures as they try to act cool.

Tyler Down: So, you still coming over to my house after school?

Clay Jensen: Yeah, yeah, for sure.

Tyler Down: Cool.

Clay Jensen: Can't wait.

Clay leaves the dark room as the other student doesn't suspect a thing. Tyler then leaves the dark room as he meets up with Tony in the hallways.

Tyler Down: So nobody's talking about Bryce.

Tony Padilla: I feel like a lot of people are talking about Bryce.

Tyler Down: Not to me.

Tony Padilla: Maybe not, but... everyone's still talking.

Tyler Down: About how he got shot in the head?

Tony stopped walking when Tyler mentioned how Bryce died.

Tyler Down: It's online!

They continue to walk until Tyler stopped.

Tyler Down: Tony.

Tony Padilla: What?

Tony looks toward where Tyler is looking at and they see 2 police officers exiting the school's office as they leave Liberty.

Tyler Down: You didn't call the police?

Tony Padilla: Is there a reason I should've called the police?

Tyler Down: No, that's not...

Tony Padilla: Because if we call the police, we're all in a shit-load of trouble. You... you know that, right?

Tyler Down: Is that the only reason why you didn't call them?

Tyler begins to walk away.

Tony Padilla: Tyler! Where are you going?

Tyler Down: What, you don't remember the spreadsheet? It's therapy Thursday.

Tyler heads for the school's office for his appointment with Dr. Singh. After his meeting, he runs into Alex.

Tyler Down: Hey.

Alex Standall: Hey.

Tyler Down: What are you doing here?

Alex Standall: I just came to check up on you.

Tyler Down: Because they told you to?

Alex Standall: No, because I wanted to.

Tyler Down: I didn't kill Bryce.

Alex Standall: I know. I believe you.

Tyler Down: I'm supposed to go to an H.O. meeting.

Alex Standall: I'll walk with you.

Tyler Down: Okay.

It's time for a H.O. meeting. Alex walked Tyler to the meeting as the girls begin to talk about Bryce, which is the last thing we need to talk about, especially with Tyler in the room who sits down on the couch with 2 girls.

Casey Ford: I'm glad he's dead. I mean, aren't you?

Is she serious? He was a human being.

Jessica Davis: I mean, it's complicated.

Hannah Baker: Same with me.

Casey Ford: Well, I think whoever shot him did the world a favor.

Hannah Baker: Are you being serious?

Casey Ford: Yeah. The only question now is: how do we make sure they don't turn him into a martyr?

Jessica Davis: I don't know. I don't know what to think.

Casey Ford: Well, look. Just because he's dead doesn't mean we can't still make him hurt.

Hannah Baker: How can you hurt him even more, he's dead. He won't feel a thing.

Casey Ford: So, we think we should protest Bryce's funeral this weekend. It's genius, right?

Hannah Baker: What?

Okay, she's out of line. That's crossing the line.

Jessica Davis: I don't know, you guys. I mean, Bolan is already on me about Homecoming. I don't think it's the right time to start...

Casey Ford: It's the perfect time! Homecoming was just the start. We have to go big or go home, Jess.

Girls: Yeah.

Jessica Davis: What, you all feel this way?

Hannah Baker: Seriously?

Girls: Yeah. Definitely.

Tyler Down: I don't.

Thank god for Tyler, me & Jess aren't alone in against protesting a funeral. Everyone now turns to Tyler and give him a dirty look.

Tyler Down: Sorry, but is dancing on someone's grave really the way to show we're the bigger people here?

Tyler has a point.

Casey Ford: I'm sorry, did you just tell the only actual sexual assault victims in the room how we should be running our club?

Tyler Down: No, I was just...

Casey Ford: Good. Because, you know, allies are welcome and all, but be a fucking ally.

I can't believe Casey

Hannah Baker: Casey, protesting a funeral is crossing the line. Tyler has a point.

Jessica Davis: Hannah is right.

Casey Ford: Whatever. All right, so it's gonna be at that church on First Street. I think I have a list somewhere of who can drive, so we should carpool.

In the boys locker room, Justin & Zach talk about Bryce's death and then bring up Tyler as Monty overhears. Monty jokes about Tyler killing Bryce and then making gay joke about Tyler & Zach which leads to a fight between Zach & Monty as Justin & the rest of the football team & coaches break it up .

School is finally done for the day. Clay is going with Tyler to his house to retrieve the gun. I took it upon myself to go with them. Clay was against it, but I persuaded him to let me come. I got in my car and followed them as we arrive to Tyler's house. We go inside and head straight to his room as Tyler closes the door.

Tyler Down: It'll look suspicious if you turn around and leave. Mom thinks we're friends, so...

Hannah Baker: We are friends, we just...

Clay Jensen: We should take care of this now.

Tyler Down: Okay.

Suddenly, someone was knocking on the door.

Mrs. Down: Tyler, open doors.

It was Tyler's mom.

Tyler Down: Sorry, Mom.

Mrs. Down: Bring the cans up, please.

Tyler Down: (Sighing) 2 Minutes. Yeah, coming. Sorry.

Tyler leaves his room to go help his mother leaving me & Clay in his room. Clay decides to snoop around.

Hannah Baker: What are you...?

Clay Jensen: Looking for the gun.

Hannah Baker: He's gonna be pissed if he catches you.

Clay goes through Tyler's drawers & his closet and finds nothing. Clay then goes through his desk...

Clay Jensen: Hey, Hannah. Check this out.

I go up to Tyler's desk and Clay points to Tyler's laptop that had something on it.

Hannah Baker: What is that?

Clay sits down on a chair and opens the laptop.

Hannah Baker: Seriously, Helmet?

Clay opens up Tyler's pictures and...

Hannah Baker: Oh, my god!

I couldn't believe what we're seeing. It was pictures of Bryce's dead body floating in the water. I can't believe he took pictures. Bryce had a hole in the back of his head.

Tyler Down: I can explain those.

We were startled when Tyler came back. Now I'm scared for our lives.

Tyler Down: This isn't what it looks like.

Clay Jensen: Really?

Tyler Down: Okay, guys. Just... Calm down, okay? Just...

Hannah Baker: Tyler, Jesus!

Clay Jensen: What did you do?

We hear a knock on the door as we look to see Tyler's mother coming in. Clay quickly shuts the laptop closed so Tyler's mother won't see the pictures.

Mrs. Down: Tyler, open doors. Hi, Clay. Hannah. It's good to see you again.

Clay Jensen: Hi, Mrs. Down.

Hannah Baker: Hello.

Mrs. Down: Dinner's on the table. I'm hoping the both of you would join us.

We agreed to join the Downs for dinner. I texted my dad that I'll be having dinner with Tyler and his parents tonight. We join the Downs on the dinner table as Clay sits next to Tyler opposite of the Downs while I sit in the middle. Tyler's parents started a conversation about Bryce.

Mrs. Down: I just worry for you kids. I mean, has the school done anything?

Tyler Down: They made an announcement over the PA. They're offering counseling.

Mr. Down: Yeah, well, it's incredibly upsetting. How about you, Hannah? How are you possessing this?

Hannah Baker: I-I... (Sighs) He didn't deserve to die. I still don't know how to feel about it.

Mr. Down: Well, if you want to talk about anything...

Tyler Down: I think... you know, we're all still trying to figure out how we feel.

Clay Jensen: And... what's true and what isn't.

Clay knows that Tyler has some explaining to do, but not with Tyler's parents are present.

Mr. Down: Well, sure. I mean, it's just so awful to think that a kid could do something like this.

Mrs. Down: Well, do they know Bryce was murdered?

Hannah Baker: The paper says he was shot.

Tyler Down: But, you know, that also doesn't prove anything. I mean, maybe... he shot himself.

Hannah Baker: Yeah, maybe.

Mr. Down: He was a troubled kid.

Yeah, he was. What he did to me. To Jessica. To Chlöe. Those girls who went to The Clubhouse.

Mrs. Down: Well, in any event, Clay, Hannah, I cannot tell you what a difference it's made having you in Tyler's life. Especially you, Hannah. I'm glad you forgave him.

Mr. Down: Yeah. You 2 and Tony and Alex, you've just been such good friends.

Tyler Down: You guys... you're embarrassing me.

Mrs. Down: Well, it's true. After that frightening false alarm last spring, you've been so kind to him.

Mr. Down: You kids look out for each other. It gives me hope for the future. I'm serious. Don't laugh.

My, god. If they only knew the truth, it will hurt them. After we were finished with dinner, Tyler grabs his backpack and takes us back to Tyler's room as he closes. Tyler takes out a pocket knife from his pocket. I'm scared now.

Clay Jensen: Tyler, listen. Look, it's gonna be okay, whatever you did.

Tyler Down: What, do you think I'm gonna, like... stab you both in my house?

Clay Jensen: I don't know. I just know that whatever happened, we can take care of it.

Tyler Down: What do you think I did? Say it. Say it, one of you!

Clay Jensen: I think you shot Bryce!

Tyler Down: Do you think that as well, Hannah?

Hannah Baker: I didn't until I saw those pictures.

Tyler sets his backpack down as he takes the blade out. Tyler uses his pocket knife to open a air vent and takes out the gun he kept.

Tyler Down: I kept the gun because I thought I might have to use it. I had the chance to kill him. And I didn't.

Hannah Baker: But you have the pictures.

Tyler Down: Because I found him. In the water. I'm the one who called the police and told them where he was.

Clay Jensen: You told the police?

Tyler Down: Anonymously. Because I knew how it would look.

Clay Jensen: Why were you at the bridge in the first place?

Tyler Down: Because... I was... gonna jump.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing. Tyler wanted to end his own life just like I tried last year.

Hannah Baker: Why?

Tyler Down: I knew things were never gonna get better, and...

Tyler begins to sob as tears start to come down from his eyes.

Tyler Down: No one was gonna come to my rescue. No one really believed that I could change.

Clay Jensen: But I do. I do believe it.

Hannah Baker: I believe it, too.

Tyler begins to break down in tears.

Tyler Down: (Sobbing) You didn't today. I didn't either, for a long time. I thought I'd never be able to get away from who I was. Who I've been. From what hurt. So, I climbed the bridge, and... And I looked down, and I saw this, like, flash of purple, like a jacket. And somehow, I just knew. So, I went down below the bridge. And I saw it... him... Bryce. Dead. Cold, like... Like, gray. Like, not a... person. And I thought... "That's it. He doesn't get to be anyone anymore. It's over... for him." And I knew right then that I didn't want to be dead. I want to live, and keep getting better and be stronger, and that's... that's why I want to give the gun away. Because I didn't need it anymore.

I begin to tear up a bit. If only I felt that way last year before I slit my wrists. Hearing what Tyler just said, I look at my wrist which is covered up with the sleeves of my sweater. Tyler & Clay looked at me and understood what I'm thinking. Tyler then sets the gun down on his bed.

Tyler Down: It hasn't been fired. I've kept it over a year and it hasn't been fired. You can tell.

Clay Jensen: But... the backpack... all day?

Tyler Down: Yeah.

Tyler grabs his backpack and takes out the brown paper bag and gives it to Clay. Clay puts his hand inside the bag and takes out a old camera.

Tyler Down: An Exakta VX camera. Like in Rear Window. The one Jimmy Stewart uses. You thought it was cool, remember? This one doesn't actually work, 'cause, well, that'd be too expensive, but it's a... It's still cool to look at. Right?

Clay nods in agreement with Tyler as he looks at the camera while I smile while looking at the camera.

Clay Jensen: Right.

Tyler Down: I have a chance to be someone else... because of you. Because of all of you.

It breaks my heart that we all thought that Tyler was the one who killed Bryce. I wanted to give him a hug, but he doesn't want anyone to touch him. We stuck around until it got dark. We left when Tyler felt asleep. Me & Clay headed for Monet's to meet with everyone to inform them about Tyler & Bryce. When we got there, Ani was outside waiting for us.

Ani Achola: How's Tyler?

Hannah Baker: Asleep.

Ani Achola: How's you? You okay?

Clay Jensen: Not yet.

Ani Achola: Can I hug you both?

I smile & nod at Ani while Clay says...

Clay Jensen: Yes.

Ani hugs the both of us which we really needed. We then let go of each other.

Clay Jensen: We should go inside.

The 3 of us go inside where Justin was already waiting for us after he got off from his shift. Jessica, Tony, & Zach join us minutes later. We tell them that Tyler didn't shot Bryce but he did find his body, Tyler was the one who called the cops and that we got the gun from him.

Clay Jensen: Tony & I will get rid of the gun.

Zach Dempsey: Because we just believe him?

Hannah Baker: We believed you.

Zach Dempsey: So, where's Alex?

Jessica Davis: He's on a ride-along with his dad. Guess it's the only time they get to spend together nowadays.

Zach Dempsey: Yeah, okay. See, this is the thing, guys. This is a murder investigation. And we're hiding Tyler and his gun...

Justin Foley: Bryce wasn't shot.

What? We all look at Justin who was checking out his phone.

Clay Jensen: There was a hole in the back of his head.

Justin Foley: So the papers guessed it was a gunshot. They were wrong.

Tony takes the phone from Justin as he begins to read the article that Justin had out.

Justin Foley: It's saying he was beaten.

Oh, my god! Who could've done something like that?

Zach Dempsey: This... This is fucked up.

Justin Foley: Zach...

Zach gets up from his seat.

Zach Dempsey: No, you know what? You guys do whatever the hell you want. I don't want to know about it. Not anymore.

Zach just crutches on out of here, wanting nothing to do with this. We're all in disbelief.

Tony Padilla: They think it might be blunt force trauma and they're looking for the murder weapon. They're dragging up the river on both sides of the bridge.

Clay Jensen: Oh, shit!

Hannah Baker: What?

Justin Foley: The river? Let me guess, is that where you guys dumped Tyler's guns?

Tony Padilla: Correct.

Oh, shit indeed! Now what are we going to do next?

Hannah Baker: So... new plan needed for this one then.

Justin Foley: Give me the gun. I'll deal with it.

Everyone leaves Monet's as they now worried about the police probably finding Tyler's guns in the river. Jessica gives Ani a ride home as Ani's mother watched from the window. Ani, thinking that everyone is asleep, tries to sneak in.

Amara Josephine Achola: And who was that dropping you off?

Only for her mother to be awake doing the dishes.

Ani Achola: Hello, Mum.

Ani walks to the kitchen as Amara finishes the dishes and begins poring some tea.

Ani Achola: Jessica Davis. We were just studying for a Spanish test.

Amara Josephine Achola: (Sighing) I worry, Amorowat. And on a day like today. I fear for this family.

Ani Achola: I thought we were supposed to be staying out of their business.

Amara Josephine Achola: You should be staying out. Me, I work here.

Ani Achola: I live here. Let me help.

Amara Josephine Achola: You will not. My job will never be your job. You have to remain on track. Our place in this country is not guaranteed. You don't enjoy the same privileges your classmates do. If something like this could happen to these people, imagine what could... (Anguished sigh)

Ani Achola: Mum, I'm... I'm sorry. I didn't mean to...

Amara Josephine Achola: Everything a mother does, she does for her child. If she loses her child, she loses everything.

Ani Achola: Mum, you won't lose me. I promise.

Justin goes to meet with Seth at the alley next to The Blue Spot. Seth steps out of his ar and goes up to Justin.

Seth Massey: How much you get, kid?

Justin Foley: It's not as much as Bryce gave you, but enough.

Seth signals with his hand to hand over the money.

Justin Foley: How do I know you won't come back?

Seth Massey: Well, you don't. That's kinda how this works.

Justin takes out Tyler's gun and points it at Seth.

Seth Massey: You pull that trigger... and there's no going back.

Justin hesitates and puts the gun away and pays Seth. Meanwhile, Alex's ride along took a stop over at Navy Pier as it's all hands on deck and his father needed to be there. Bryce's Range Rover was found as forensics officers are search the vehicle. The sheriff

Sheriff Diaz: All right, everyone, listen up.

The sheriff gathers everyone up.

Sheriff Diaz: We got blood on the ground and a dead man's car. No more leaks. That bullshit in the Register took our whole day. This is officially a homicide. It's gonna be a long night. You know what to do.

Sheriff Diaz goes up to Bryce's car as a forensics officer shows him a bag that contains steroids.

Alex Standall: Oh, shit!

Alex immediately takes out his phone and texts someone about the police finding Bryce's Ranger Rover and a bag of drugs. Alex is now worried, but what is he worried about?
