May 2018

Jessica's presidential campaign is now underway. Me & Ani have been helping out Jessica by passing out flyers & buttons. Gosh, I feel like Courtney & Marcus now. I no longer need my crutches as I can finally walk on my own. I've started working out at Caleb's gym and took him up on that offer to take self defense class. While I was passing out flyers, I heard that Zach was voted team captain for the football team which is great. I'm proud of Zach. Although, I am surprised that they voted for Zach instead of Monty. I mean if you think about it: Bryce was the team captain, Monty is best friends with Bryce, Monty should've been team captain. Oh, well. As I'm passing out Jessica's flyers, this jock comes up to me.

Charlie St. George: Hi.

Hannah Baker: (Annoyed) Hi.

I give him a flyer. This jock, I don't remember seeing him at Liberty before my attempt.

Hannah Baker: You know, I don't think I've seen you before.

Charlie St. George: Oh, that's because I wasn't here when you...

He stops as I look at him. He begins to get nervous.

Hannah Baker: Tried offing myself.

Charlie St. George: I'm sorry, I didn't mean to...

Hannah Baker: No sweat. It's bound to happen. Someone bringing it up. So you're new?

Charlie St. George: No, I've been coming here for 2 years. I'm a sophomore. I took some time off around that time because my mom got sick and passed away.

Hannah Baker: I'm sorry.

Charlie St. George: It's fine. When I came back, I heard what happened to you. Everyone was talking about you.

Hannah Baker: I know. Judging by your jacket, you're a jock.

Charlie St. George: Yeah. I'm a quarterback for the football team.

Hannah Baker: You're friends with Bryce Walker or Monty?

Charlie St. George: Yeah, I am. And I know what Bryce did to you and to Jessica Davis. I'm sorry about that.

Hannah Baker: I'll have you know that I don't trust the jocks nor do I like them because of what they did in The Clubhouse.

Charlie St. George: Oh, I had nothing to do with that. I mean, I've been to it but nothing happened when I went there. I swear. Look, you don't trust jocks, I get it. I just wanted to introduce myself and let you know that I'm not like the other jocks.

Hannah Baker: We'll see about that.

I walk away from Charlie as I continue passing out flyers. I run into Clay who was putting up a flyer for robotics club as I join him.

Hannah Baker: Mind if I put a flyer next to yours?

Clay Jensen: I don't see why not.

I put up one of Jessica's flyer's next to Clay's flyer.

Chlöe Rice: Hey, number 85.

We both hear Chlöe's voice as we turn to see her approaching Zach at his locker.

Zach Dempsey: Hey, there. What's up?

Chlöe Rice: Well, I just wanted to let you know that I am assigned to be your official cheerleader for Spring Workout. So...

Chlöe takes out a rabbit's foot.

Chlöe Rice: For luck.

Then she pins it on Zach's letterjacket.

Zach Dempsey: Lucky me. Unlucky rabbit.

She laughs at Zack's little joke.

Chlöe Rice: You are my new hero.

Chlöe kisses Zach on his cheek and then walks away. Zach closes his locker and starts coming our way as he notices us looking at him.

Zach Dempsey: What?

Hannah Baker: So, you're her hero.

Clay Jensen: But Bryce is still her boyfriend?

Hannah Baker: Ouch.

Zach Dempsey: Man, shut up!

Zach just smiles at us and walks away. Ani comes down from the 2nd floor who was also passing out flyers buttons and joins us as we begin to walk down the hallway.

Ani Achola: You and Zach Dempsey? Friends? Project partners? Secret online gamer pals?

Clay Jensen: D, none of the above.

Hannah Baker: He's my ex.

Ani Achola: You're ex? Wow. Clay, you're a lucky guy.

Hannah Baker: Yes, he is.

Clay Jensen: I wouldn't say lucky.

Ani Achola: Zach's hot. But he's too hot. I don't trust too hot.

Hannah Baker: You don't, huh?

Clay Jensen: Do you trust me?

Ani Achola: Oh, you trap me, but I escape. Everybody trusts you.

Hannah Baker: I don't know about that.

Clay Jensen: Not everybody.

Ani Achola: That's not what I see. I see the hero that holds everything together.

Clay Jensen: Why do you say that?

Ani Achola: No, it's just an observation. I meant it as a good thing. It's a beautiful thing, to be so trusted.

Hannah Baker: Huh, Ani's got a point.

Clay Jensen: Well... maybe I'd like to trade it for hot chocolate someday.

Hannah Baker: Please don't. You're perfect the way you are.

I give him a kiss on the cheek as me & Ani head off to continue passing out flyers & buttons. The following week, it was time for the candidates to make their speeches before the election. We all gathered up at the auditorium as Courtney introduced the candidates.

Courney Crimsen: And now I'd like to introduce our next candidate for Liberty president, Jessica Davis.

Jessica's opponents already went up and now it's her turn. I'm sitting next to Ani as we watch on.

Hannah Baker: (Whispering) She looks a little nervous don't you think?

Ani Achola: (Whispering) She can do this.

Jessica Davis: My name is Jessica Davis. I'm running for president because I want change. I don't mean better dances or new cheer uniforms...

Monty de la Cruz: Sexy!

Luke Holliday: Yeah!

Girl: Seriously?

Hannah Baker: (Whispering) Fucking Monty.

Ani Achola: (Whispering) What a arsehole.

Jessica Davis: ...new cheer uniforms or healthy choices in the vending machines. I mean real change.

Monty de la Cruz: Bitch!

Luke Holliday: Oh, shit!

Hannah Baker: I'm gonna kick his ass.

Ani Achola: Hannah, calm down.

Jessica Davis: You know what? Fuck you, Monty!

Oh, shit!

Jessica Davis: Fuck all of you jocks.

Holy shit! Jessica told off Monty and his jock friends. The crowd really loved Jessica's response. The crowd now quiets downs.

Jessica Davis: I was raped... by the king of the school and I stayed silent. I protected the jock who raped me because... I don't know. Because I thought it would hurt more to speak up... because I thought it would ruin my reputation. But I am no longer staying quiet. No more. So, here's my promise. If you elect me, I will take down the jocks at this school.

Girl: Yeah!

Do it, Jess! Take it home.

Jessica Davis: Put an end to their bullshit. I will not tolerate the ones who protect them, and I will demand that their victims no longer remain silent.

Girl: Go, Jessica!

Jessica Davis: Because their silence destroys us all.

Hannah Baker: YES! Go Jess.

The crowd began cheering for Jessica. She's got this in the bag. It may not have been the speech that she worked on, but it's way fucking better. We all meet up for lunch to celebrate her speech. After school, I had to go to my appointment for my first session with Dr. Ellman. I'm sitting in the lobby when I hear my name being called out.

Dr. Ellman: Hannah Baker?

I turn to see him standing in the doorway to his office. I nod my head as I stand up and enter his office. I sit down on his couch as he sits in front of me on a chair.

Dr. Ellman: I'm Dr. Ellman.

Hannah Baker: So nice to finally meet you. I've heard about you from my friends.

Dr. Ellman: Really, who?

Hannah Baker: Clay Jensen & Alex Standall. They're your patients.

Dr. Ellaman: (Chuckles) I haven't had a session with Clay in a long time. How is he?

Hannah Baker: He's doing good. We're together, as in a couple.

Dr. Ellman: That's good to hear. I am aware of who you are. I followed your trial.

Hannah Baker: So has everyone in Evergreen County.

Dr. Ellman: And I was surprised to read that Clay was involved and what he did with you.

Hannah Baker: It wasn't his fault. Peer pressure.

Dr. Ellman: But we're not here to talk about Clay. We're here to talk about you and why you're here.

Hannah Baker: It's because I tried to kill myself.

Dr. Ellman: I've listened to the tapes you've made, online. When you called to set up your appointment, I downloaded the audio files so we can talk about the events you went through the past year and a half.

Hannah Baker: You want to play them.

Dr. Ellman: Only if you want to.

Hannah Baker: That includes talking about Bryce Walker?

Dr. Ellman: Again, only if you want to.

If I want to get better, I had to. We spent the entire session talking about my childhood and my experience at Ridgeview before moving here. We even talked about how I bullied Sarah Carlin which I will always regret. We didn't get to the tapes or my experience at Liberty, yet. But it was a good start.

After school, Clay offered Ani a ride home and she accepts. Ani gives Clay directions to where she's headed as they arrive to an intersection.

Clay Jensen: You live... This is, like, an intersection.

Ani Achola: Yeah, perfect.

Clay Jensen: But you told me you lived on Manor Ridge not at the bottom of Manor Ridge.

Ani Achola: I can walk up the hill.

Clay Jensen: Or I can drive you up the hill.

Ani Achola: Well, for such an A student, you are crap at following directions.

Clay Jensen: You don't want me to know where you live. You think I might be a stalker.

Ani Achola: I think you're the opposite of a stalker. That first day at lunch, you ran away like you were ill.

Clay Jensen: I didn't run, I... deftly avoided. You are not deftly avoiding right now.

Ani Achola: My situation is... complicated.

Clay Jensen: I tend to thrive in complicated.

Ani gave it some thought and caved in.

Ani Achola: It's at the top of the hill. The Chatham house.

Clay Jensen: The Chatham house? Isn't that where Bryce Walker lives now? You live...

Ani Achola: In the guest house. My mum is a home health care aide. She takes care of his grandfather.

Clay Jensen: You have to get out of there.

Ani Achola: I can't get out of there, it's where I live.

Clay Jensen: But... do you know his story?

Ani Achola: I know enough. It's all online.

Clay Jensen: It's not all online. They don't tell you... who he hurt.

Ani Achola: Look, it's not like we're friends or anything. I don't even live in the house.

Clay Jensen: It's not safe there. Okay?

Ani Achola: I'm not some pretty princess locked away in the rich kid's house. I take care of myself.

Clay Jensen: You don't know the whole story.

Ani Achola: You're going to tell me everything I need to know and save me from the monster?

Clay Jensen: I mean, I hope so.

Ani Achola: Wow, how have I survived without you for 17 years? I just can't imagine. Thank God you're here to save me from the wilds of Evergreen county.

Clay Jensen: Come on...

Ani Achola: Thanks for the ride. I'll see you at school.

Ani gets out of Clay's car and walks to the Chatham house much to Clay's disbelief. Once Ani arrived, she finds Bryce next to the mini bar as he just stares at the liquor.

Ani Achola: Vodka martini, very dry, please.

Bryce turns around to see Ani entering the room.

Bryce Walker: Is that for you to drink with your mother?

Ani Achola: Mmm, funny. Didn't know you drink.

Bryce Walker: Yeah, I only recently started again. I stopped for a while. Condition of my probation. Thought I'd see if I could make it stick but it's hard to fight genetics. You know, right? About my probation.

Ani Achola: Yeah, basically.

Bryce Walker: And why I'm at fucking Hillcrest now.

Ani Achola: Not great, is it?

Bryce Walker: (Sighs) It's fine. It's what I deserve.

Bryce just walks away. Ani was feeling sorry for him. The next day at Hillcrest, Bryce was invited to hang out with some of the football players while walking through the quad. He thought he was meeting with some like-minded individuals who wanted to talk about hooking up with girls, but that wasn't the case. One player, Dean Holbrook appeared to get along with Bryce until suddenly he reminded Bryce that the team doesn't want to hang out with a rapist. After football practice, Bryce's teammates shove him down the stairs, giving him cuts and bruises. Bryce arrives home as Nora, Amara Josephine, & Ani were shocked to see Bryce's face with the cuts and bruises. Amara Josephine cleans up his wounds while Nora accuses him of starting fight at Hillcrest and not being able to get his life together. Days later, Ani was helping out with the laundry when she hears some noises coming from Bryce's room. She sets the laundry basket down as she goes to Bryce's room and finds him just trashing his room in anger.

Ani Achola: That is some violent redecorating.

Bryce Walker: Shit, I'm sorry. (Heavy breathing) I thought it was just me and the old man. So many fucking vases in this house.

Ani Achola: Is everything okay?

Bryce Walker: Why, doesn't it look okay?

Ani just stands there not knowing what to say.

Bryce Walker: Chlöe just broke up with me.

Ani Achola: I'm sorry. Why?

Bryce Walker: (Sighs) I don't know. She, um...

Bryce takes a seat on next to a desk.

Bryce Walker: She was the only one who stood by me. For a long time. I thought she believed in me.

Bryce begins to sob.

Ani Achola: I'll give you some privacy.

Bryce Walker: Could you maybe stay for a second?

Ani Achola: Sure.

Ani stayed for a little bit to comfort Bryce. It was the beginning of a secret friendship.
