Kevin Porter leaves his house ready to get to work at Liberty. Porter goes to his car and sees someone threw a brick with a message through the back of his car's window. The message written on a piece of paper that was tied to the brick said "Know Your Place". Meanwhile, Clay is just sitting on his bed looking at a sleeping Justin.

Hannah Baker: Are you gonna ask him about the Polaroid?

Clay Jensen: I don't trust him any more than I did yesterday.

Hannah Baker: (Exhales) How can you not trust that little sleeping angel?

Justin wakes up and sees Clay just looking at him.

Justin Foley: The fuck are you looking at?

Clay Jensen: Justin, do you think that you can keep your shit together until someone comes over to look after you later? I'm running late. I gotta get to school.

Justin Foley: I'm fine. I don't need a babysitter. It's just so fucking cold in here.

Hannah Baker: Chills. He has a fever.

Clay Jensen: It's chills. You have a fever.

Hannah Baker: Well, get him another blanket.

Clay grabs a blanket and covers Justin up with it.

Clay Jensen: Maybe a shower would help.

Justin Foley: I'm not that bad.

Clay Jensen: You smell like dead feet. Just shower, please.

Justin Foely: Oh, I'm hungry.

Clay Jensen: How can you be hungry? You threw everything up.

Justin Foley: Maybe that's why I'm hungry.

Clay Jensen: Take a shower.

Clay goes to get Justin breakfast while he showers. As Clay returns upstairs, he's surprised that his dad is home. Clay makes something up to make sure his dad doesn't go inside the bathroom and catch Justin showering. Clay goes inside the restroom to make it look like he's the one taking a shower. Olivia and Jackie arrive to the courthouse.

Jackie: These kids need to be sympathetic, Olivia. I worry about calling Ryan Shaver. His deposition was practically smug. We're putting pieces together. We have to get Hannah's poem into evidence, and he's the one who...

They stop when they see Andy sitting down on a bench as he gets up and approaches them.

Jackie: Printed it.

Andy Baker: Morning. Hi. I'm Andy.

Jackie: Oh, of course, I remember.

Andy shakes Jackie's hand.

Jackie: Will you be joining us today?

Olivia Baker: No, he won't.

Jackie: Well, I'll give you 2 a minute.

Jackie heads to the courtroom to give them a moment.

Andy Baker: I wanna be here with you. I need to be here. I'm sorry I haven't been. I was at the hospital yesterday and as I was speaking to our daughter, I realized that she needs me to be here.

Olivia Baker: The things they've been saying in there, things that you'll hear, you have no idea.

Andy Baker: I'll learn.

After Justin finished showering, he ate his breakfast. After he finished eating his breakfast, Clay tells & shows him the polaroids.

Justin Foley: I don't know. It's definitely not the pool house.

Clay Jensen: So, where is it, then?

Justin Foley: I could ask one of the guys and maybe figure out...

Clay Jensen: No. You stay here until you're clean. For Jessica.

Justin Foley: I could just show this around. It's...

Clay Jensen: No, I got it. Thanks.

Tony Padilla: Fuck me. Fuck.

Tony enter the room through the window.

Justin Foley: Wait... He's my babysitter? What happened to Sheri?

Clay Jensen: Sheri couldn't skip twice in a row. She's taking the evening shift.

Justin Foley: I thought he wanted nothing to do with me.

Tony Padilla: No, I don't. So keep your mouth shut and don't piss me off.

Justin Foley: Don't piss me off.

Tony Padilla: And if you puke on this leather, I'm gonna have to kick your ass.

Clay Jensen: Great. So, WebMD detox info and contingency plans are on the desk. Don't let anyone see you. And I gotta go. Um, have fun. Don't kill each other. Thanks. Bye.

Clay left before they can even say a word. Ryan Shaver testified in court today. Ryan testifies that the school didn't try to find the author of Hannah's poem and no one took it seriously. He was asks him why he'd expect the school to help when he himself didn't recognize Hannah's cry for help. Ryan proceeded to tell her that that's a teacher's job and he isn't a teacher or therapist. Sonya asked Ryan to read the poems aloud in court and who the poems are about. Ryan claimed he doesn't know. After Ryan read 3 poems, he got asked the same question and answered honestly this time, they were about Justin Foley. Ryan lied to the question if Hannah remained in personal contact with Justin. Ryan said Hannah also wrote about the lack of love but didn't publish those poems because they weren't good. He talked about Hannah being lonely and how her writing was representative of what boys did to her, but Sonya cut him off. At school during P.E., Clay spots Alex sitting down on the bleachers on the football field as he goes to join him.

Clay Jensen: Isn't this, like, your special resources period?

Alex Standall: Yeah, I hate that shit. I just... I gotta listen to these again.

Clay Jensen: Alex, uh... last time, you listened, I think, multiple times.

Alex Standall: Yeah, I know. I just... I keep listening to mine over and over because it doesn't make sense. It's like I'm missing something.

Clay Jensen: Do you... Do you wanna talk about it?

Alex Standall: Aren't we talking about it?

Clay Jensen: I guess so.

Clay suddenly notices a groundskeeper chalking the baseball field.

Clay Jensen: Hey, what is that guy doing?

Alex Standall: Uh, chalking the field.

Clay Jensen: What is that machine?

Alex Standall: I don't know. Like... I guess it's a chalk machine?

Clay Jensen: I gotta go.

Alex Standall: I don't know if it's called a chalk machine.

Clay Jensen: No, I just... Look, don't listen too hard, okay?

Alex Standall: Yeah.

Clay remembers seeing a chalk machine in one of the polaroids. Clay goes off as Alex continues listening to his tape. In the library, Tyler & Cyrus read about Ryan's testimony as Tyler is angry that Ryan wasn't honest. Chad, who was with them, suggests pulling a prank on Ryan. They create a dating profile to fool Ryan. Back at Clay's room, Tony & Justin are poker using Clay's Legos for money.

Tony Padilla: I raised you three rectangular ones.

Justin Foley: If I win, we get to go outside.

Tony Padilla: No.

Justin Foley: Come on, just for a walk.

Tony Padilla: No. I'm sorry. You heard the bossman. Besides, you got people looking for you on both sides of the law.

Justin Foley: Since when is Tony Padilla afraid of shit like that?

Justin looks at Tony and sees that he is indeed afraid.

Justin Foley: Holy shit. You are scared. Why?

Tony ignores the question. Justin continues playing...

Tony Padilla: My brothers and I, we beat this guy up. He ended up pressing charges a few weeks later. That was my 2nd strike, now I'm on probation. If I get seen with you, we get busted, that means number 3, that means I do time.

Justin Foley: Shit.

Tony Padilla: What the fuck happened to you? You don't gotta tell me.

Justin Foley: No, no, no. It's... It's cool. It's... I just basically blew through most of my money the first few weeks I was out, living in, like, motels and shit. Yeah, oxy was like taking the edge off, but... all these pills are so pricey, and... heroin's cheap. So you know, here I am. Shitting myself in Clay Jensen's bathroom.

Tony decided to change his mind.

Tony Padilla: Put your fucking shoes on.

Justin & Tony sneak out to take a walk. At school, Alex & Jessica walk together in the hallway as they talk about how their parents were mad at them for skipping school. They discuss their kiss from yesterday and agree not to talk about it. Alex tells her that he listened to the tapes and asks if Jessica is okay, now knowing what Bryce did to her. Alex suggest that Jessica should consider going to group therapy with other victims of sexual assault. After talking with Alex, Clay realizes the 2 Polaroids were taken at school on account of seeing the chalk machine used to mark the lines on the baseball field in one of the photos, stipulating that the fact they were taken at school would help Hannah's case. As Justin & Tony walk around the block...

Tony Padilla: Yeah, I think we should head back now.

Justin Foley: No. It's so nice out. Some fresh air, some vitamin D.

Tony Padilla: Yeah.

Justin Foley: Some... some... Oh, shit.

Justin begins to throw up on some bushes.

Tony Padilla: Oh, come on. Shit.

Tony sees a jogger passing by them.

Justin Foley: Sorry.

Tony Padilla: Jesus Christ, man. Don't fucking talk to people.

Justin Foley: I was just apologizing to the purple tracksuit lady. It's... Ugh. I don't get this whole secret agent routine.

Tony Padilla: Oh, really, you don't get that there are some people who might not be happy to have you back?

Justin Foley: Jessica wants me back. That's all that fucking matters.

Tony Padilla: Yeah. Yeah.

Justin Foley: Right? That's what she said, right?

Tony Padilla: I didn't talk to her, Clay did.

Justin Foley: He said she wants me here.

Suddenly, rock music starts blaring over some speakers as a car with Liberty flags passes by them.

Tony Padilla: I don't think... I don't think it's that simple. I think she...

Justin Foley: What? What is it?

Tony Padilla: Does that car look familiar?

Justin Foley: Whose is it?

Tony Padilla: I don't know. Obviously, they go to our school. So you got your wish. Everybody's gonna know you're back.

They make their way back to Clay's room as everyone will soon know that Justin is back. Back at Liberty, Clay searches around the school hoping to located the room where the polaroids were taken but no lock. Clay read about Ryan's testimony and questions "Hannah" why she would fall for guys like Justin. She responds with "You can't choose who you fall for." After court was done for the day, Olivia follows Andy to a house where he's living. Olivia discovers that he's living with his girlfriend, Valerie and her daughter much to Olivia's displeasure. Word has now spread around Liberty that Justin has returned. After cheerleading practice, Chlöe tells Jessica she is meeting Bryce's parents and wants to help find her a boyfriend. Jessica snaps at Chlöe and tells her that she doesn't want one. Jessica quits the cheerleading team in the process. Ryan takes it upon his himself to pay Olivia a visit at her house. Ryan knocks on the door as Olivia answers.

Ryan Shaver: Um. Hi.

Olivia Baker: Hi.

Ryan Shaver: I, um... I was friends with Hannah, and I let her down, and I'm sorry. I just wanted to come by and say what they're doing to her is bullshit.

Olivia Baker: Thank you. Can I...? Can I ask you some questions about Hannah's journals?

Ryan Shaver: Oh, um... Yes, of course.

Olivia invites Ryan inside as he makes his way inside.

Olivia Baker: She mentions "The Clubhouse" in 3 different poems. "Something changed after The Clubhouse. I imagined myself for a moment one of the elite, but I never should have gone to The Clubhouse." "...in his lucky letter jacket." That's gotta be Justin, right?

Ryan Shaver: It could be. I don't know. I don't remember anything about a clubhouse.

Olivia Baker: Damn it. Okay. What about "the intruder"? He comes up several times, too. There's a whole poem about him.

Ryan picks a poem and reads it.

Ryan Shaver: "Sometimes the intruder doesn't need to break a window. Sometimes they already have the key."

Olivia Baker: Do you know this one?

Ryan Shaver: No.

Olivia Baker: I think it's about the bullying at the school. The house is on fire, her lungs are filling up with smoke, and the intruder, it's this other Hannah that everyone thought they knew.

Ryan Shaver: Oh, no, that makes sense. Hannah was so talented, but she didn't know it. She wrote out of love, out of need. And I wanted to show her that the rush of people loving your work is just as good as love. So I stole her poem. It was just one poem. But I was wrong. I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.

Olivia Baker: Sometimes I fantasize that all the answers are in these torn-out pages.

Ryan Shaver: Oh, I... I don't think so, I... (Chuckles) I imagine those are just false starts or... things she was ashamed to even admit to herself.

Olivia Baker: Why did she keep in contact with Justin?

Ryan Shaver: Loneliness. It can be intense at our age.

Olivia Baker: It's not just at your age.

Ryan leaves Olivia's house wondering what The Clubhouse is. Ryan takes his phone out and goes on a dating app and gets a message from someone. They chat to meet up at Monet's later at night. Unfortunately for Ryan, he was catfished by Tyler, Cyrus, & Chad. Jessica meets with Porter in his office as he asks Jessica about Justin and if she quit cheerleading because he's back in town. He asks her if she knows where he is but doesn't say. Later that night at Bryce's house, Chlöe has dinner with Bryce and his parents, while Bryce's father, Barry Walker, questions Bryce about Chlöe's loyalty, his mother, Nora Walker, questions Chlöe about their relationship. Nora notices bruises on her arm, but Chlöe tells her that they are from cheerleading. While Zach & Alex are in the middle of physical therapy, they talk about Justin's return. Alex tells him that Justin is staying with Clay and that he kissed Jessica and worries he didn't feel aroused after it, and that he hasn't felt aroused since before he shot himself. Sheri arrives to Clay's house as she's welcomed in by Laine. Laine informs Sheri that Clay went to The Crestmont to watch Vertigo with his father. Sheri waits til Clay arrives as Tony sneaks out. As Sheri waits for Clay, she stays downstairs with Laine as she ask Sheri a question about some texts for a case she's working on. At Monet's, Ryan was waiting for his date when he no shows. He looks around and sees Tyler, Cyrus, & Chad sitting at a booth as they are laughing at him and Ryan figures that they set up the profile and knows that no one is coming. However, Tony shows up with Caleb for a date, and invites Ryan to join them. Ryan declines the invitation at first, but then decides to join them. Jessica finally decides to go to a therapy group. When she arrives, she see Nina Jones, who she met days ago, talking to the group as Jessica discovers that she too was also assaulted. After the meeting, Nina approached Jessica as they get acquainted. At the Down's house, Tyler's mom questions Tyler about his new attitude. She explains that a neighbor told her he saw him & Cyrus shooting guns. Tyler lies and says it was just a BB gun. Alex goes on a nude webcam site in an attempt to try and feel aroused. He gives his name as Zach to the model and describes his appearance similar to that of Zach's. However, he is unable to get an erection and gets frustrated. The model, realizing he is underage and too young for the site, disconnects him. Clay finally returns from The Crestmont as he talks to Sheri.

Sheri Holland: I'm sorry. I didn't get your text message.

Clay Jensen: The procedure is if you see the car, you go through the window.

Sheri Holland: Your whole family has the same car. I thought it was you.

Clay Jensen: Mine is smaller.

Sheri Holland: Okay, anyways, I made an excuse to go to your room and use your bathroom, so that Tony could leave, and Justin's been asleep ever since.

Clay Jensen: Well, at least he didn't get discovered.

Sheri Holland: Yeah, um, about that...

Sheri informs Clay that Justin was spotted and now everyone at Liberty knows he's back. Clay goes to his room.

Clay Jensen: When were you gonna tell me someone saw you?

Justin Foley: When were you gonna tell me about Jess? I talked to Tony. She doesn't want me here, does she? She doesn't want me helping Hannah either.

Clay Jensen: It's complicated.

Justin Foley: You lied to me.

Clay Jensen: No, I... It's the truth. Jessica just... doesn't realize it yet.

Justin just scoffs at Clay.

Clay Jensen: She'll change her mind. You have to get sober, and she'll see.

Justin Foley: Fuck that. I'm wasting my time.

Justin begins putting on his shoe.

Clay Jensen: She kept your postcard. It's how we found you.

Justin stops putting on his shoe.

Clay Jensen: She kept it, Justin. "Nancy, I'll always love you. Sid." Why would she keep that?

Justin Foley: I really did love her.

Clay Jensen: So, stay.

Justin decided to stay, for Jessica. Jessica returned home from therapy and decides to return to her bed that night after continually sleeping on her parent's bedroom floor. Mr. Porter decides to visit Justin's mom at Seth's house. Seth shows up and demands he leaves. They get into a fight which ends with Porter getting arrested. Clay wakes up in the middle of the night and finds that Justin has left. Meanwhile at the hospital, Hannah's fingers begins twitching but then stops when a nurse comes in without realizing.
