The doors flew open and Vic skidded in through the beanery doors.
"Houston, we have a problem" panted Vic
"What now" asked Jack as he stood up with his bowl and headed to the sink.
"Herrera is here" said Vic still trying desperately to catch her breath
The whole room went still
"Wait, wait; what do you mean Herrera is here" wondered Ben, " those two" he started
Maya grimaced as she walked over to hand Vic a bottle of water and asked " Has anyone seen Sullivan?" , "Do you think we should warn him?"
"I know they are getting divorced and all that but they are combustible." announced Travis
"I used to think it was tension, like when Sullivan first came to the Station but damn. They look ready to jump one another" replied Vic
"Who is jumping who? " Enquired Robert as he walked the door.
"Do you have super hearing or something" whispered Vic
"19 – Line up," shouted Beckett from his office
"So no one is going to tell me? Okaaaayyy then?" Robert sighed as he shrugged his shoulders as he left for the barn
As 19 lined up in the barn ; Aquino walked in with the rest of 23. At least that explained why Andy was here.
Vic peaked to see if Sullivan appeared surprised to his soon to be ex-wife, but he showed nothing. He barely shows emotions anyway she thought to herself.
"Since we all have to work this holiday, we thought that it would be best if we were in one station. Since 19 is bigger we are all here for the next four days so get comfortable people." Said Aquino
"Each pair" continued Beckett "will contain a member of 19 and 23 and we will rotate tomorrow"
The entire room looked at each the tension was thick and no one dare to believe that they were crazy enough to stick the volatile divorcing couple in the same building; let alone in as a pair during this shift.
"Maddox and Warren – Aid car"
"Montgomery and Barnes; Engine"
"Bishop & Duval – Ladder"
"Hughes & Mayhorn – Engine "
"Shit" spat Vic
"Ruiz & Sullivan – Ladder"
And Herrera on Desk
Although 19 tried hard to show it, no one could believe that Andy had been sentenced to Desk duty over the holidays Andy made no effort to argue, she simply turned around and walked out to sit at the front desk.
Maya and Vic rushed into the foyer and stood in front of Andy at the desk. Her hair was the same and her skin seemed to be glowing and she has a small smile on her lips.
"Herrera has swagger" proclaimed Vic
"What?" Andy retorted
"You have swagger, mama knows when someone has swagger. I have a sense for it" sang Vic as she thrust her hips. Dancing to her own song.
Andy looked up and noticed Sullivan; immediately her demeanour changed. Maya turned just in time to check what she was looking at and realised that Sullivan was walking up the stairs and slapped Vic across the arm.
Vic carried on singing that Herrera had swagger as the rest of the teams filled the Foyer. 19 carried on as they were used to Vic acting a fool but the firefighters stopped to walk.
Theo walked over Vic, "What is swagger?" he has asked his girlfriend
"Swagger is when you get some" she replied as made a thrusting motion with her hips biting her lower lips. Theo shook his head and made his way upstairs.
"She's looked like that for a while" chimed in Maddox." We thought it was because she was acting Captain"
Aquino and Beckett started walking towards the crew that had gathered around the front desk, wondering what was going on.
"Shoo, everyone go away. I have no swagger; I am just sitting here trying to do my job" snapped Andy
"Hmm, we'll find you later" laughed Maya and Vic as they headed towards the barn to start chores.
During lunch everyone noticed that Herrera and Sullivan gravitated towards opposites end of the table. "Since we're all off, what's everyone's plan for the Holiday's this year?" queried Ben.
Everyone responded with their plans, and most were shocked that Sullivan even had plans. Although he was part of the team it was rare for him to give out any information about himself. Andy was the only one that didn't seem to say anything but they just assumed that her time would be spent with Pru or with the Alvarez's.
During the night, they had a five-alarm call at a Rubber factory,19 and 23 had been placed on Search and Rescue and however the blaze refused to die.
After hours of fighting the inferno and missteps and bad calls from the Battalion Chief; there was a call to let the fire destroy the building. Everyone almost sighed with relief. All firefighters were evacuating the building when Jack noticed that he hadn't seen Andy in a while. He was sure that she had been next to him when they were leaving the building.
"Ben, you seen Andy?" he shouted
"Nope, not since we told to abandon the building"
As they turned around, they saw that there was the form of a firefighter laying in the wreck.
"Get a gurney over here stat" Ben yelled at Travis. Jack was already sprinting towards the form and as he realised it was Andy.
As they picked her up, she made no movements. Each member of 19 crowded around their friend to make sure that she was okay.
She was out cold. Warren and Maddox loaded her into the aid car and sped away whilst the rest of the team finished clearing. Robert tried hard not to think of all the things that could be wrong with Andy. As soon as they were done all engines headed towards Grey Sloan; with what they had just experienced with the loss of Dean. Everyone was on edge.
As they entered Grey Sloan, Ben was standing with his hands on his waist and Maddox was lounging on the chair provided with his feet on the table in the waiting room when they arrived.
"What's the news, Ben" asked Maya
"Not sure, yet they took her in but they won't tell me anything"
"Surely, they could tell you, aren't you a doctor?" asked Barnes. "I'm a doctor but I'm not her doctor and neither am I her next of kin" replied Ben
Bailey came out towards the group all gingerly waiting to hear news of their friend. This was the third time they had sat in this waiting room, waiting for news of one of their own. It broke Bailey's heart to see the soberness amongst them.
"Okay, I can't go into specifics but what I can tell you is that she is going to be okay however she will definitely need a couple of tests and to stay in for monitoring" stated Bailey.
"But what is wrong with her?" asked Vic
"I'm sorry, I can't say" earnestly replied Bailey "But I will need to know who Herrera's next of kin is as I have some forms here" as she turned towards the captain.
Aquino looked uncomfortable for a second before stating "Sullivan", "Her paperwork says Sullivan".
The whole room froze and all of a sudden, the atmosphere became thick: Sullivan had gone to the canteen to grab coffees and food for everyone with Ruiz and hadn't been there for the announcement. Everyone started talking at once all trying to figure out who had to tell him. No one wanted to the one to speak on it. As Ruiz and Sullivan leisurely walked back towards the group and Robert realised that everyone was staring at him and that it was unnaturally quiet.
Bailey was walking towards him "Sullivan, can I talk to you a minute" she requested. Robert looked up and the team were still looking at him. He handed the baked goods and coffees to Travis who was the nearest one to him and followed Bailey to a corner.
"I understand that things are difficult between you and Andy but you are named as her Next of Kin. We need you to sign off on her tests"
"Sure" he replied
"And I also need you to know that she is pregnant. This procedure won't affect the baby but there is always a chance that these things could go wrong."
"Okay" he replied slowly as he signed on the dotted lines. He really did not know what to say but when Bailey had requested to speak to him, a pregnancy announcement was not what he had been expecting. He looked up and everyone was trying hard not to look at him, even Beckett.
Hours later, Dr Grey walked out and called him over "She's awake and asking to speak to you"
The entire waiting room stared at him and waited to see what he would do. He stood up and straightened his shoulders, standing tall and followed Meredith Grey. The entire walk towards Andy's room he was playing out all the worst-case scenarios that he could imagine. No walk had ever left so long.
Robert tentatively walked into the room; he really wasn't sure what to expect. The fear was eating at him but he smiled when Andy reached out her hands out to him, smiled and she pulled Robert down towards him and put her forehead on his.
"We're having a baby" she whispered softly
"I know" he chuckled
She pulled him into a hug " I asked that Dr Grey give us a minute, because I need to say something"." I want this baby because it is all the good parts of you and me. I don't expect ...."
Andy didn't get to finish her speech as he kissed her gently and wrapped his arms even tighter around his wife.
"Merry Christmas, baby"
The entire crew stood outside looking astounded as they peered into the blinds watching Andy and Sullivan.
Looks like there wouldn't be a divorce after all.
