Ram (pronounced Rahm)-First son of Dasharath and only son of Kaushalya, husband of Sita, brother of Lakshman, Shatrughan, and Bharat, mortal reincarnation of Lord Vishnu, born upon the Earth to kill off the evil demon Ravan and reestablish the power of the gods over the demons. He is exiled for fourteen years by his sad and unwilling father. Eternal and stout follower of dharma, or righteousness, and loves Lakshman (like a brother) more than anyone.
Sita (pronounced Seehta)-The Wife of Ram, adopted daughter of Janak and Sunaina, sister of Urmila, cousin of Shrutakirti and Mandavi, mortal reincarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. She follows her husband dutifully when he is exiled. Ram starts a war to win her hand back from the evil demon Ravan who has kidnapped her.
Ravan(pronounced Rahvun)-Evil Demon who kidnaps Sita. SPOILER ALERT!!! Will eventually face death at the hands of Ram, though I figured everyone expected that.
Lakshman-Third eldest son of Dasharath and first son of Sumitra, husband of Urmila, brother to Ram, and Bharat and twin brother to Shatrughan. Mortal reincarnation of Seshnag, Vishnu's loyal (king of the serpents) servant. He will accompany his brother and sister-in-law into their exile, and ensure their safety and survival, sadly leaving behind his wife. Ram is always first in his mind. I include waaaaay too much of him in this story, since he is my favorite character.
Bharat-Second eldest son of Dasharath and only son of Kaikeyi, husband of Mandavi, brother of Ram, Lakshman, and Shatrughan. Out of pure devotion to his brother, when he is offered the crown by his scheming mother who exiled Ram for fourteen years, he refuses.
Shatrughan-Youngest son of Dasharath and second son of Sumitra, husband of Shrutakirti, brother of Ram and Bharat and twin brother of Lakshman. When Bharat refuses the throne, since Lakshman has followed his brother into the forest, it is up to Shatrughan to rule the kingdom for fourteen years in the place of Ram.
Dasharath-Husband of Kaushalya, Kaikeyi, and Sumitra. Father of Ram, Bharat, Lakshman, and Shatrughan. Once, he gave Kaikeyi two boons when she saved his life. She took them, and he was forced to make Bharat king, and exile Ram for fourteen years. Separation from his firstborn son killed him.
Kaushalya-Wife of Dasharath, chief queen of Kosala. Mother of Ram, Step-Mother of Bharat, Lakshman, and Shatrughan. She is the chief and first married queen of Dasharath, though not the favorite, and loves her son more than anything.
Kaikeyi-Wife of Dasharath, queen of Kosala. Mother of Bharat, Step-Mother of Ram, Lakshman, and Shatrughan. She once saved Dasharath's life, thus becoming his favorite wife. He gave her two wishes, and she wished for them much later, when Ram was about to be crowned. She wished that Bharat be crowned king and Ram be exiled for fourteen years.
Sumitra-Wife of Dasharath, queen of Kosala. Mother of Lakshman and Shatrughan (the twins), Step-Mother of Ram and Bharat. She is not the chief, nor the favorite queen, but harbors no bitterness. She is known for her wiseness and understanding. Lakshman refuses to disobey any of her commands.
Urmila-Birth daughter of Janak and Sunaina, wife of Lakshman, adopted sister of Sita. She is devoted like anything to her sister, and soon enough, her husband. She and her husband sadly part when he has to protect her sister and her brother-in-law, but she stays dutifully behind, and welcomes him back joyfully when he returns fourteen years later.
Mandavi-Elder Birth daughter of Kushadwaj (Janak's younger brother) and Chandrabhanga, wife of Bharat, sister of Shrutakirti. Yeah, not much to say about her.
Shrutakirti-Birth daughter of Kushadwaj and Chandrabhanga, wife of Shatrughan, younger sister of Mandavi. She is always devoted to her husband, and believes in him like not many people do. She supports him as he is forced to take up kingship.
