"Oh, god, I would never want that." You thought to yourself.
To the other side of you, two other parents desperately tried to hold their kids in place. One of them trying to squirm out of their mom's grasp, while the dad ran toward the other who kept running around and stealing brochures off the display stands.
"Or that." You thought again.
"Kids seem like a pain in the ass."
You pulled yourself out of your thoughts and tugged on Spencer's hand, grabbing his attention. "Okay, so admission is free which is why I'm buying you whatever you want at the gift shop. I have an actual gift for you back at my place – don't worry – but I wanted to give it to you at the end of the day." You rambled on about how you were buying everything today.
Spencer brought you out of your ramble with a soft chuckle, grabbing your attention by unclasping his hand from yours and pulling you into his side by your waist. He kissed the top of your head and whispered, "Thank you, gorgeous."
You beamed at the name.
Gorgeous.
Sure, he'd called you gorgeous before, but it was usually to describe how an outfit looked. He never used it as a nickname. You loved the way it made your body tingle.
With that, the two of you began your path to discover further into the depths of the deceitfully large building.
The two of you moved from room to room for about two hours examining each painting and sculpture carefully and listing off facts to one another.
You'd been there for quite some time already, so you decided it was about time to bring Spencer to the grand exhibit you were dying to show him – and you, yourself, were dying to see in person.
"Close your eyes." You playfully said to him.
"What for?"
"Just do it!"
He chuckled and closed his eyes as you guided him across the hall, receiving strange looks from some passersby.
You finally got to the entrance and whispered, "Open." Spencer slowly opened his eyes, and when he did, all the light in the world could be seen in his corneas.
Before you, was one of the most magnificent pieces you'd ever seen.
Janet Echelman's, 1.8.
Yours and Spencer's eyes beamed at the breathtaking sight above and around you.
A large volumetric form made of knotted and braided fiber was suspended from the ceiling. The programmable lighting system and wind movement made the piece move like a wave, something which Spencer caught onto.
"It looks like a wave... a very colorful wave." He muttered, his voice filled with childlike amazement.
You pulled him to step further into the room. You managed to find a space under the piece and laid down, Spencer following suit. The two of you laid with your hands under your heads staring up to the fiber knots.
"It's inspired by the data recorded on March 11, 2011. In Japan." You whispered. You watched Spencer's brain work for a moment before he whispered back, "The Tohoku earthquake and tsunami. It was so powerful, that it shifted the earth on its axis and shortened the day by 1.8 millionths of a second." Spencer stated. You, of course, already knew this but you loved to hear it come out of Spencer's mouth.
The wind made you colder, even in your overcoat, so you shuffled closer to Spencer. He caught on to your shivering and wrapped his arm around you, pulling you closer to him. He rubbed his hand up and down your arm to create some sort of heat.
The action didn't help much, but you warmed up just by watching Spencer watch the art. That sight was more encapsulating.
The way the light highlighted his button nose and outlined his plump lips and sharp jawline. The way his curls subtly moved with the wind. And especially the way you could see the life in his eyes that so often seemed distant. Those eyes that screamed for peace now rested easy at the sight.
