Luo Meng dragged her with him to the back of the Palace Receiving Room where all things delivered to the palace were left in until the department responsible for the merchandise collected.

“Did a maid bully you?” He pushed her against the wall and she winced harshly in pain.

So he was right after all, she was hurt. “Tell me the sinner and I will bring hell to that person for you, Dao.”

Tears tried to leak from her eyes as she shook her head. “I have been sent by my mistress, let me go.” Her eyes were swollen and heavy. She had been crying for him again, presumably.

What was so special about him that she did not want to let it go? He was not worth that much for her to be this distraught for weeks.

Luo Meng slouched down and ran his hand along each part of her leg but got no reaction from her. Her legs seemed to be all right. What could it be, then? Maybe he was overthinking.

“My apologies. I thought too much and disturbed you.” He stepped away from her and nodded so she could get to wherever she was going.

They had a moment of staring, regretting over what they could have been and what they were missing. First-love heartbreak always hurt the most.

It was painful to walk away, he had done it several times as she watched. Thus, on this day he would rather watch her go. He altered the sword that slung on his back as he stared at her back.

Dao’s uniform always hung beautifully on her small body. She was magnificent on every part of her and he had seen her dressed and naked to be the relevant judge of it.

His cheeks grew hot when he saw smudges of blood on her buttocks area. These womanly things, how was a man to mention it?

“Dao… wait….”

She stopped and questionably glanced.

“Your uniform… I think you aunty is visiting now...” Again, his hand grazed through his hair shyly.

“I know.” She looked down and turned to go.

“Are you going to walk like that? Let me give you my coat to wrap yourself.”

“I have tried bandaging myself and it hasn’t worked. I do not care anymore.”

Luo Meng shrugged off his jacket and then went over to bundle her. “You know you could be punished for being careless to walk around like this. The palace is strict and you are being reckless.”

He tied his coat around her waist which had Dao grimace and bending in pain.

“Do you experience stomach pains. One of my guards has a wife with the same problem.” He tightened the coat around her.

“Stop, stop!” She hit him repeatedly. “It hurts, it hurts…”

Luo Meng paused as his mind put everything together and made sense of the situation. He felt chilly winter air knock him in the stomach.

'The bandaging… The blood… The limping...'

“You were punished?” He spun her and unabashedly lay his hands on her buttocks. This made her bark, collapsing against the wall in agony.

“Someone beat you. Who did it?”

Dao shook her head stubbornly, her body shaking as she whimpered.

“It is Li Lian, isn’t it?”

“Leave me alone, Luo Meng.” Her hoarse voice choked on tears.

“It is her, isn’t it? You are bleeding like a slaughtered cow and she still had you work!”

“It was my decision to work, she said I could rest.”

“You are bleeding, what did the physician give you?”

She froze.

“She did not take you to a physician?”

“I must feel the pain for three days to remember it.” It was the punishment quote in the palace books that taught on servant punishment.

“That is what she said?” Luo Meng yelled in disbelief. On this day Li Lian would know who Luo Meng really was. She was going to pay even though it would cost his head being on the platter.

“Come with me, Dao. I will tell His Majesty of her injustices toward you and ask that he give you to me.”

“You are not aware of why she beat me,” she protested.

“Does it matter? Beating you is a crime!”

“She is my mistress! She is allowed to discipline me, Luo Meng. And for what I did, other mistresses would have made me drink poisoned wine for death.”

Luo Meng threw his coat on the dusty ground angrily. “Nothing justifies beating you!”

“She knows I slept with a man.” Dao refuted.

“Only that? Then she is mad! His Majesty knows you were the woman I was with and he did not dare punish you. My punishment was barely anything beastly like this. If His Majesty was lenient, why couldn’t she? Is she above the son of heaven now?”

Luo Meng vehemently unsheathed his sword. “I will confront her today!”

Dao wrapped her hands around him. "Luo Meng, no, she cannot find out. She can't know it was you. Please!"

"My sweet Dao." He breathed to calm himself down. "Marry me. I can't see this happen to us anymore. Or let's run away, whatever."

Her body went stock-still before pulling away. "When I begged to run away, you called me a clueless little girl. You even dared sleep with me and dumped me right after, telling me we were a mistake."

"I didn't mean that, you know I didn't."

Fiery eyes looked at him as she backed away. "I have been hurt too much to be with you."

"Dao…"

"You hurt me," she snapped.

He was too stunned by her words to come with a reply.

That satisfied her because she spun from him and limped away.

To see her leave like that, he realized that watching the person you love walk away is most hurtful than being the person who walks away. And on her he had walked away more than twice.
