Chapter 27

The next few weeks passed quite uneventfully. I did my Graphic Designing classes ignoring Jake as well as he ignored me. I got a few praises from Montgomery, but whenever she wanted Jake's opinion, he'd always criticise it. Not that I hoped for his praises anyway…kind of.

So…yeah. Life was going okay. Nothing exciting…nothing despairing.

Until that day.

It happened after my Graphics Designing class. I was just about finished switching off my computer when a few words made me perk up my ears.

"Ace is so sweet."

I whipped my head around to the back of the class. Rachel was talking to her friends and they were walking in my direction towards the door.

"He took me out to a movie on Friday and then -"

"Excuse me, are you talking about Ace Richards?"

I didn't realise that I had actually said that until Rachel gave me a weird look.

"Yeah?" she replied hesitantly.

"Ace Richards from Economics? Brown hair? 5'8' tall?" I asked.

"Yeah…why?" Rachel was now looking at me as if I had grown an extra head.

"Well…er…" Oh damn, what the hell do I say now? "Erm…well a friend of mine is his girlfriend." Wow, so smooth, Rebecca.

Rachel however, didn't look the slightest bit shocked or uncomfortable. "Yeah, I know, but he said he's going to break up with her."

With that, she and her posse traipsed off, leaving me quite dumbfounded.

I simply blinked and sat back down on my seat, alone in the class.

Wow.

That was simply all that went through my head.

"He always was a shady character, that Ace dude."

It amazed me how his voice could still make my heart race.

I looked up. Jake was leaning on the teacher's desk with crossed arms, his black hair falling over his eyes. He was wearing dark blue jeans and a white hoodie. I unconsciously made a mental note to myself that he looked good without his goatee…more mature…

I realised he was waiting for me to say something when he raised an eyebrow. I quickly looked away, clearing my throat.

"Well, it's understandable really. It was high time he did something like this. Although, cheating on me came as a bit of a shock. I didn't expect something so drastic from him." I hurriedly closed my mouth to stop my rambling. God, I sounded like a psychologist.

Jake frowned, looking confused. "You sound a bit…indifferent."

What, you expected me to break down or something? I shrugged. "So?"

"Didn't you…love him?"

"No." Not like I loved you…

I didn't know why I was having this conversation with him. A part of me just wanted to walk out of here, but my feet were rooted to the ground.

"Jake you – oh Miss Smith, do you need something?"

I put on a smile on my face as I turned towards Professor Montgomery. "No, ma'am. I'm just leaving now."

"Ah, okay," she said and turned towards Jake. "Jake, where did you park your car?"

"I'm coming, Janet. Just a minute, please," said Jake, running an agitated hand through his hair.

Ah, on a first name basis. Dating? Hell yeah. Living together? Most probably – an annoying voice ticked off an imaginary list in my head.

Montgomery raised an eyebrow at him but left without saying anything, leaving me alone with Jake once more.

"Rebecca, we didn't get a chance to properly talk…"

I was halfway to the door and stopped when I heard him.

"Can we…meet up somewhere and talk this out?"

My hand tightened on the strap of my bag on my shoulder. Talk what out? We've both moved on. Him with better luck than me.

"There's nothing to talk about," I whispered and walked away.

"Hey sweetie, where were you on Friday?"

Ace threw me a startled look but quickly covered it with a frown.

"Erm...hanging with the guys…why?"

"Oh, nothing, I was just wondering," I said, giving him a cheerful smile and then calling the waiter to take our orders. "Hey, today's my treat, okay?"

Ace chuckled. "What's the occasion?" he asked. "Chocolate sundae please," he added to the waiter.

"Strawberry milkshake, thank you," I said to the waiter and turned towards Ace. "Oh, just because we've been so good together, don't you think?"

"Ah…erm…okay," he said awkwardly, wiping his forehead.

"I mean, really, two years you know? Wow. We rarely fought and got along so well," I continued.

"Yeah…wow."

"In fact, you know Rachel? Just the other day, she was telling me how lucky I am to have a loving boyfriend like you."

Ace's face paled considerably. "You know."

I nodded. "Yep."

Ace opened and closed his mouth several times in shock. "I - I'm sorry."

"It's okay. I'm happy that you've found someone. I hope you're happy with her."

"You – You're not mad at me?" he spluttered.

"No, silly," I said, patting his hand.

Ace heaved a sigh of relief. "Thank God. I was freaking afraid you'd never forgive me."

"Oh, I forgive you alright," I said, getting up when I saw the waiter heading our way. "But, just remember one thing sweetie…"

When the waiter came to our table, I took the chocolate sundae from him and turned the bowl upside down on Ace's head. His mouth hung open as the cold, brown liquid dripped slowly down his head and onto his lap. Everyone at the coffee shop was looking at me in shock.

I leaned towards Ace. "I never forget," I finished. "Happy Anniversary, sweetie," I added cheerfully, and then, placing cash on the table and taking my milkshake with me, I skipped out of the café with a huge smile on my face.

Strawberry milkshake had never tasted this good.
