He just stood and stared. All he wanted to do was comfort her, hold her in his arms, tell her it was alright; tell her he could be there for her. He could be her winner.

But instead, just like always, he had messed up. So he sat on the sidewalk with her, and together, but so, so far apart, they cried.

"Clay! Wake up!" Winnie demanded, shaking the dirty blonde boy.

His mouth gasped for air and he sat up, shrugging her off of him. His forehead was sweating, and his hands shook.

"Are you ok? You were..uh...having a bad dream," Winnie hushed him, helping him lay back down and stroking his cheek tenderly.

He stuttered on his words for a second, letting her comforting touch soothe his alarm.

"I'm sorry. I didn't mean to...hurt you," he replied sleepily. She understood he wasn't just referring to waking her up, but mistakes from the past.

Winnie shushed him, pressing a humble kiss to his sticky palm.

"Don't apologize. It's behind us now. I'm here with you."

Her voice, even in the middle of the night, was like milk and honey. With the combination of her reassuring whispers and her fingers against his face, he quickly went back to sleep without a second thought.

Winnie, however, assured he was asleep before returning to her previous sleeping position. Her mind wandered, confused by the fact that he was still having bad dreams about that night. While she had tried to force it out of her memory, it seems he couldn't avoid it.

She wished, silently, as she drifted back to sleep, that he knew how much she cared for him. Then and now.
