The door opened and India stuck her head in. "David, you have a patient. Looks like the other child from the crash. I'll handle Max, if it's all the same."

David sighed but left as India walked in, picking up some of the things David had had with him when he came in that he had apparently stuck on the dresser. She walked over to me and helped me sit up to where I was on the edge of the bed.

"Mrs. Taylor, sit for a moment."

"I want to leave."

"I want you to sit." She said, glaring at my mother.

Mom walked over to the chair and sat as India helped me take my sling off.

"I thought I just got a cut?" I said, looking at her.

"You did, but it's deep and cut into the muscle. That's why you're in so much pain. You've also got an infection from the lack of care from the hospital. Because you've been coughing up blood, we haven't been able to look at the wound properly."

"Oh..."

She started unwrapping it.

"Aliens have five different attributes that make them benevolent, malevolent, or barbaric in species. These five attributes are sophistication, intelligence, technology, motive, and body type. Using these five categories we then do a range from 1 to 10 to determine the possibility of them either helping our planet or hurting our planet. The higher the species is on the scale, the more of a threat they pose. Max has informed me that the aliens we are dealing with are called Elbaskins. So far, they have a very high number in all five categories."

"What does this have to do with my son?"

India made a face as she looked at my wound, which she had been unwrapping while she spoke. "I will need to give you another injection for this infection..."

India began to piddle around for a second in one of the cabinets on the other side of the room.

"The high ranking the Elbaskins possess in all attributes means that they would be categorized as either benevolent or malevolent in nature; but as we have seen, it seems they are malevolent. They abducted your son out of nowhere, performed experiments on him to try and further their own race, and messed with his mental faculties to make him comply. Their body type is that of gelatinous creatures and they are able to take on many forms to almost complete detail in order to keep their subject in compliance. They have the technology to make an almost identical clone and be able to use that technology to enable a mental connection and be almost undetectable. All for the sake of their own race.

"I mention all of this because if they can do all of this and if they are doing it for the simple reason of keeping their race alive, what makes you think that they couldn't have done what we have been told? That they sent a clone down to earth, leaving the real subject on the ship light years away with a conscious link to both bodies? It would be very logical of them to do that, because if something happened to the clone, they would still have the source safe and sound on the ship with them. We are not working with little green men in backwoods stories, Mrs. Taylor. These are highly intelligent, sophisticated, technologically advanced gelatinous creatures that have only one motive: preserve their race.

"With that being said, and with you knowing all of this as well, why are you here if you didn't think that what I've just told you was true? If what Mars said was true? Why are you here if you didn't have the smallest doubt that this boy in front of you could be your real son?"

Mom watched me for a moment and then put her hands over her face.

"I don't know... I just don't know..."

"Dad said that it didn't matter..." Mom looked at me as I watched her, trying to stay calm. "He said that it didn't matter how I came back to you that you would always love me. I know who I am but if you think I'm a clone, so what?" I started crying. "I've been stuck on that ship for two years, a year thinking I was safe at home with you. The last thing I remember is being in the shower... I've been dreaming of this day for so long! I'm sick and I'm scared and I just want to go home!" I started coughing and made a face. "Damn it!"

"You're upsetting my patient." India said. "If you're not going to be kind, then leave. We don't need you."

Mom looked at me and then got up, running out of the room.

*******************************

I yanked my arm from India, yelling in pain, but I just wanted to go ahead and die.

"Max."

"Leave me alone for like two minutes!"

"We warned you that things would not go as well as you had hoped."

"I KNOW THAT!"

India grabbed me and pulled me back to a sitting position and pointed her finger in my face.

"Listen here and listen well: I can't cater to you. David is good with people and catering to their needs, but I am not. Bedside manner was never my specialty and I can't change overnight, but you've got to try a little harder to fight this thing than you are. Seriously, you're not doing much of anything to even *try."

I glared angrily at her. "You might study aliens, but you've never been abducted by them, have you?"

"No."

I pushed her away from me. "Then shut the fuck up! How the hell would you know what it feels like to have the things that's happened to me happen? You think you're so smart... You don't know anything! You made everything worse! Get out! GET OUT!!!" I screamed.

India stared at me as I started to cough, blood spattering my hands as my body shook. I started to shake, my body seeming to do it without my consent. India grabbed me and pulled me to her, hugging me. I couldn't stop crying and shaking.

"I know you think that I ruined everything, but I don't think I did. Your mother needed something to work with, something to help her make a decision. I've decided that you are who you say you are. You're the original Max Taylor... I'm going to make your parents believe you too. I'll find a way to give them sure evidence..."

"I just want to be normal... Please..."

It wasn't the person I expected on more than one account, but it felt nice to be held as I cried my eyes out in her shoulder. Mom had been so close and yet she still rejected me... I don't know how much more of this I can take.
