Chapter 21: To Risk One's Life

"Deal!" Law grumbled. 

He realized that Bridgette was strong; he saw the way she fought. And now that he also learned that she was a pirate before she got pregnant with Shanna, there was a little more expectation building up in Law. However, Bridgette's strength was way beyond his expectation. Even with his 'room' he couldn't defeat her. Even without the seastone hammer, Bridgette was much too powerful for him.

"Hahahahaha! Out of stamina already Law?" she asked as she sat on top of him. Law laid in the dirty floor, grumbling vexingly as he hammered his fist into the ground. Bridgette just laughed, seemingly enjoying the boy's fit of anger. "You're still a hundred years too early Law! Hahahahaha!" 

"Grrrrrr....... Damn it!" Law cursed. He grabbed a handful of the grass and tore it from the ground. 

Bridgette got off the young boy, allowing him to crawl back to his feet. Law dusted himself off with a big frown on his face. He seemed to be annoyed with himself. "You're getting stronger. Really. But you rely on your powers too much. You're powers are strong, really strong. Whether you use it for medical purposes or fighting, the Ope Ope Fruit is one of the most powerful devil fruits in the world, but as you already know, its biggest flaw is the incredible amount of stamina it needs."

"Then...what should I do?" Law asked.

"Train your body. Keep practicing and pushing your limits," said Bridgette. Law nodded in determination. 

"Alright! Then let's-"

Before he could finish Bridgette cut him off. "However, no matter how hard you push yourself, your stamina won't become limitless. At some point, you're bound to meet a strong opponent you can't beat. In this world, there is no such thing as strongest, there is only stronger."

"T-Then what's the point?! So you're saying I'll lose either way? Just how long do I have to train to become strong?" Law demanded.

"You don't necessarily have to become incredibly strong Law," Bridgette smiled. Law just looked at her doubtfully, to which the woman chuckled. "I'm not saying you shouldn't become strong Law. You must become as powerful as you can possibly become. But Law, the most important thing isn't your personal strength."

"Then what is it?"

Bridgette smiled at him, eyes softening as she placed a hand on Law's head. "Gather friends Law. Strong, loyal friends who are willing to lend you a hand at times of need. Friends willing to sacrifice their own lives for you. In this world, there's no power stronger than the combined force of a group of friends fighting for the same purpose. And you...you must also be a friend willing to put your life on the line for them."

Bridgette-san.... I made friends, gathered comrades.... I wanted to protect them. I wanted to be strong for them. In the end, you were right. I'm weak on my own. I can't do anything on my own. Every time.... EVERY DAMN TIME! It's always Shanna that saves me. It's always her that risks her life for me. I promise this will be the last time I put her in danger. I promise next time I'll protect her properly.... So please.... "ROOM!"

Finally a blue bubble expanded around the two of them. Law pushed himself up to his knees, flipping Shanna over so she laid on her back. "I won't let you die. I promise. Scalpel!"

Even with one hand Law knew what he was doing. First the fatal injuries. He had to close up the puncture in the heart and the lungs. Without any of his tools he had to fully rely on his devil fruit powers, even though he felt like he could pass out any moment. 

After her heart and lungs were repaired enough to pull her out of danger, Law immediately started on her head injury. He was already worried about that before they challenged Doflamingo. He shouldn't have let Shanna come with him. He shouldn't have said yes to her out of a rush of emotions.
