"We are family, Adam, we are. Just not a good one."
Ruby murmured as she ran back to Beacon. She regretted everything. She regretted asking Blake for his name. She regretted looking for Adam. She regretted meeting him. Everything she has done the past couple of days, she regretted. She wished that she would've never met him so that she wouldn't have to know that her brother was her enemy that she had to defeat one day.
Chapter 5
Ruby cried as she walked back to the school building. She somehow held her tear back there, but now she was at her limit. She could no longer hold back her tears from falling across her face and onto the floor.
Ruby cried for a long time before she could regain enough energy to return to Beacon Academy. She had her hood over, covering her face, about to go back in her bed without letting her team know. However, when she was back in the room, she was greeted by her yellow-haired sister, glaring at Ruby with her arms crossed.
"So... Looks like our little red riding hood has been enjoying her little trips every night, ey?"
"Yang? Why are you awake?"
Ruby asked as she tried her best to sound as calm as she could. But really, how calm can a person look with their face completely covered by a hood at midnight? Especially that she is sniffing? Yang groaned and forcefully tried to see Ruby's face by pulling down her hood.
"Now, that is a question I'd like to ask you. What's up? And wait, were you crying?"
"Ugh, it's-it's nothing, Yang. Really."
"Mmhmm. You've been going outside every night for whatever the reason is, and now today returned with red eyes and nose. And now you want me to believe that nothing's wrong?"
Ruby hesitated. She wasn't sure how Yang would react if she heard what Ruby's been through the past few days. Would she be worried? Would she be angry? Would she-
"Look, Rubes. You're my one and only sister. And you're obviously going through something. I understand that there are some problems that you can't easily tell others, but let me help, would ya?"
Yang said in a soft voice, trying to comfort Ruby. Thanks to Yang's careful comfort, Ruby could feel her eyes tearing up again. Come on, really? Yang always knew how to make Ruby feel comfortable. And sometimes, even touched.
Yang was right. She's been through quite a lot the past few days and wasn't sure if she could handle everything on her own. It really wasn't something she'd enjoy sharing about, but she knew she could at least count on Yang. Since she was one of the very few people who know Ruby's past.
"Okay, I'll tell you everything. But not... here."
Ruby said as she looked at her asleep teammates. Thank God they weren't awake because if they were, things would have surely got out of hand quickly. Yang nodded and quietly left the room with her younger sister. The two of them headed to the kitchen which is usually open for the students to use. It wasn't surprising to find the place empty considering that the time was late.
"Hot chocolate? Coffee?"
"Cream and five sugars please."
"In your hot chocolate?"
"Ew, no. You know I meant coffee."
Yang laughed and soon got herself and Ruby a cup of coffee. They sat at the table at the corer. Ruby sipped her coffee quietly and started to explain what had happened in the past few days.
"So... You know how I'm not... Well, human." Ruby said as she swiped her hair as if she was referring to her cut-out horns. Yang nodded. "And I also told you that I used to have a brother."
"You told me that once a very long time ago. But yea, I remember."
Yang answered as she tried to recall back to the old memories. Yang Ruby sadly telling Yang about her Faunus brother. Although Ruby didn't mention it directly, one would have to be so oblivious to not assume that he would be dead. She definitely remembered that.
"Yea, I haven't told you much about him, but... I used to think that he would be dead. You know, after all those stupid war-like incidents and everything."
"Uh, yea, wait what? You used to think?"
"I used to. I just figured out that he wasn't actually dead. He's alive, and I've met him."
Ruby said quietly and sipped her coffee again. She could feel her mouth drying up with every word she says. She waited quietly as she was preparing herself for how Yang'd react.
It took Yang a few seconds to process the information she has just received. She was dumbfounded, but soon cheered and patted Ruby's shoulder. She looked delighted.
"That's great!"
"Uh, no. It's not."
"What do you mean? You just found your brother who you thought to be dead years ago! It's a family reunion!"
"... Do you also remember what Blake told us a few days ago?"
"The one about this weird aggressive Faunus guy? What was his name, Adam? The bull Fau-wait, don't say..."
"As much as I'd love to not, I have to say. Adam Taurus, the one Blake has informed us about, is my long lost brother."
Silence struck the two. Yang didn't know how to react. Her step-sister's long lost real brother, is one of the most aggressive Faunus known in Remnant? That did not sound like one of the best family reunions.
"And what's worse is, he also knows that I'm alive. He's gonna go and try to find me and... Honestly, I don't even know what he's going to do. He changed so much and now I haven't even got a clue of what on his mind anymore."
"I... I take back my words. That is not great."
"Yup."
Ruby sighed and flopped onto the table. She softly banged her forehead onto the cold table, as if the coldness from the table would help her get rid of the heat.
"Would it be impossible for you to-I don't know-persuade him to be less aggressive...?"
"I tried. And I don't think that'll work. He was chaos itself. He was mad. He isn't how I remember him. It's almost like he's a completely different person."
"So... What can we do now? I honestly think that our team should know about this."
"What-are you nuts?! No! Then I'll have to let them know that I'm in fact a Fanus, tell them about what happened ten years ago, AND tell them that Adam is in fact, my brother!"
"Woah, okay, calm down. But didn't you say that he'll probably come and try to find you? How long do you think that they can go on not knowing?"
"I... I don't know, but not now. I just can't bring myself to do that yet."
"Alright, but just one thing. I'll always be by your side. Okay? If that crazy brother of yours tries to take you away from me, I'll do everything within my power to protect you. I don't care if you and he are blood-related. I don't care that our last names are different. You'll always be my sister no matter what."
"... Thanks, Yang. That means a lot to me. I really mean it."
"Well then, no use of thinking of this now. The time is already late. Should we go back now?"
"Yup."
Ruby and Yang slowly headed back to their dorm room, both hoping that they could keep their peaceful days to keep going. Ruby, who had teary eyes did not notice that Blake opened her eyes slightly when the two returned to the room.
