The School for the Gifted: Betrayal (Book Two) - Prologue

Start from the beginning

“However, I refuse to sit here and be bamboozled and taken as a fool.” She spat out. “By people I trusted, people that I thought would take care of gifted beings such as themselves. Professor Cornelius, you have failed me. You have not done what I expected you to do, you have not taken care of Gifted academy and you have not done your job as head master of the only Gifted school in the world. I am incredibly disappointed in you.”

“I am sorry Queen Isadora, I didn’t –

“In fact you did.” She shook her head silencing him. “Isaac please step forward.”

Isaac swallowed hard, his face remaining completely composed as he stepped forward.

“Did you or didn’t you try to warn the Professor of the very serious situation in cromin that was Premeditated.” Queen Isadora said.

Isaac stood very still, his mentor staring at him with a cold glance but not as cold as the back that he had stabbed him in. Isaac stared at him, his face remaining still but his heart thumping loudly as his palms grew sweaty. He remembered the words he had said, the harsh things he spoke of his mother, and that was enough to convince him to tell the truth. “Yes, I warned the professor.”

“And, did he believe you, Isaac?” She asked him. “Tell the council what you told me.”

“Giselle was almost kidnapped by Malcolm Efra in which he told her of his premedated plan. Giselle spoke to me of it, I later told the professor but he denied that it could be true. He stated that I was a liar, a fraud.” Isaac said confidently.

The council spoke among themselves in shock. Giselle glanced at Sir Nicholas Riley who had moved away from the professor in disgust. He stared at him, his eyes hot with fury. How could he have done such a thing? How could he let gifted academy go at stake?

Several guards stepped forward causing a chill to pass through the room. Queen Isadora continued her speech. “Professor Cornelius, I hereby sentence you to twenty years in prison and discharge you from being head master of Gifted Academy. You will no longer be in charge of the school and have been released from any duties at the academy.”

The guards continued to cuff him, tears coming into his eyes. “What about my daughter? Can’t I see my daughter?”

“Your daughter is granted visiting rights once a month.” She replied.

“You cant do this!” He yelled as he was dragged out of the hall. “This isn’t fair! I gave my life to that school, I gave my life!!!”

He was cut off as soon as the door slammed close. Giselle could hear his voice in the hall shouting, shrieking for justice. She swallowed the air in her lungs, hoping that she’d be able to breathe.

“As for Isaac and Giselle, each of you are sentenced to one year detention and community service.”

Sir Nicholad Riley stepped forward almost instantly. “That isn’t fair. They save your world and that’s how you repay them?”

“Nicholas,” She sighed. “You disappear for decades and reappear thinking that you make the regulations?”

“No, not at all your majesty.” He shook his head. “But keep in mind that they deserve respect for their amount of sacrifice. They did everything in their power to make sure things went well and to save fellow Zeptorians. Prosecuting them and punishing them isn’t justice.”

“If it wasn’t for their secrets and lies this all could have been prevented.” She replied.

“If it wasn’t for her, the Gifted world wouldn’t have been saved.” He said, pointing at Giselle without hesitation. Her heart summersulted almost flying out of her chest.

“If it wasn’t for her, lives wouldn’t have been lost.” And just like that Giselle’s heart stopped. Instantly she thought of Zach, the boy gone bad that she had to kill. Her friend. She bit down on her tongue, her face going warm. She didn’t mean to. She didn’t mean to hurt anyone.

A silence passed over the hall, no one speaking a word. Nicholas Riley stared at the queen bitterly trying to do everything in his power to help his daughter and save her from any punishment. It was the least he could do, he was gone for so many years.

“I’m sorry Nicholas, I truly am. But any illegal act will not go unpunished.” The queen said. “Now, Isaac and Giselle…” She paused staring at the both of them. “I thank you and commend you for your bravery. Both of you have so much courage, and I am so grateful for your sacraface and labor to Zeptoria. However, you both broke the law…”

            They both nodded.

“However, I respect Nicholas Riley. Giselle, I see how much you are just like him.” She smiled. “Just like him you must break the rules to do a duty, an act of bravery, no matter how dangerous the task.” She continued. “I will let the both of you off with a warning and two weeks of detention, including your friends. Please do not take my kindness as weakness.”

Giselle and Isaac glanced at each other before nodding and muttering a quick ‘Thank you’.

“As for you, Sabina Ignus.” She continued. “You must wonder why you’re here. I hereby subject you to Head Mistress of Gifted Academy, if you accept.”

Sabina nodded quickly. “Of course, I would love to. Thank you so much, it is an honor.”

“The delight is mine.” Queen Isadora said. “Each of you are dismissed. Gifted Students must resume classes at once, thank you for your time. All of you may resume your usual activities and return to the campus. As for Nicholas, you may do as you wish. We all know you’re a free spirit.”

Without responding he glanced at Giselle, his eyes locking with hers. Giselle averted her gaze nervously, her heart pounding in her chest a mile per minute. She glanced at the floor, the fire in her veins fuming in so many emotions. Confusion, anger, happiness, and sadness. Why did he defend her? Why did he suddenly care?

Almost instantly, her sadness was put aside by one simple touch. Isaac grabbed her hand gently before glancing at her, a face full of composure and eyes that were filled with only one emotion: Calmness. Just like that, Giselles heart stilled and the tears forming in her eyes seized. Isaac was safe. Isaac was here. And, he would help her sooth all this pain now more than ever.
