Chapter 27: Parents

Quote of the Day: “The one who pleases his parents has verily pleased Allah (SWT) and the one who has angered his parents has verily angered Allah (SWT).”

“Paradise lies at the feet of your mother.”

“When she is a daughter she opens the door of Jannah for her father.”

SubhanAllah.

I write to you all, as a daughter of both a mother and father. There are some people out there, who don’t even have one parent. If you have both your parents, no matter what—you have been blessed.

Do you know how many people envy you, how their heart aches because they do not have the gift of two parents?

Some people don’t realize this. And never will.

To them a parent is someone who is embarrassing. Who is foreign, a stain on their “perfect” image of fitting in to the standard that society has placed as normal.

Shame on them.

I can speak for personal experience, when I say that your parents love you. And would give up everything for you. So deep is the love of a parent and child.

Right now, thank Allah a hundred times over for blessing you, with two parents, if you have been so fortunate.

It was narrated that Abu Hurayrah (RA) said: “A man came to the Messenger of Allah (SAW) and said, “O Messenger, who among the people is most deserving of my good company?”

He said, “Your Mother.”

The man then asked, “Then who?”

The Messenger again said, “Your mother.”

The man then asked again, “Then who?”

The Messenger repeated, “Your mother.”

The man asked one more time, “Then who?”

The Messenger finally said, “Your father.”

“My mom had only one eye. I hated her. She was such an embarrassment. As a lunch lady, she cooked for students and teachers to support my family. There was this one day during elementary school where my mom came to say hello to me. I was so embarrassed.

How could she do this to me?

I ignored her, threw a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my classmates said to me, "Ew, your mom only has one eye!"

I wanted to bury myself.

I also wanted my mom to just disappear. I confronted her that day and said, “If you’re only going to make me a laughing stock, why don’t you just die?”

My mom didn't respond. I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said; to me all that mattered was that my mother had embarrassed me. And I was enraged with my humiliation. I was oblivious to her feelings. I wanted to get out of that house, and have nothing to do with her. So I studied really hard and got a chance to go abroad to study. Then, I got married, bought a house of my own and I had kids of my own. I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts.

Then one day, my mother came to visit me. She hadn't seen me in years and she hadn’t even met her grandchildren. When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I yelled at her for coming uninvited. I screamed at her, “How dare you come to my house and scare my children! Get out of here!”
