8: Cedric Diggory

"Professor we-"

"I know neither of you are at fault, Miss Black," she said, her expression hardening again. "Goodnight you two. Try your best not to get into any more trouble."

We grinned. "We'll try but we can't guarantee anything," I replied grimly and turned away to give the password.

Immediately I wanted to turn back around. The Weasley twins came up and grabbed the two of us in tight hugs. "How'd you do it Harry?" It seemed as if half the common room was asking him that question and also asking me if I thought I was the true Hogwarts champion. I rolled my eyes and pointed my wand at a few of them. I led Harry towards the stairs to go to the dormitories.

"Hey, hey, what'd you guys do to get picked? How'd he get his name in? Why are there five champions?" One tiny third year had cornered us and I pointed my wand at him. "Three seconds to back away," I warned, hoping I wouldn't have to follow through.

"But -"

"One," I began, my palms getting clammy.

"I -" he tried again, eyes wide with fear.

"Two," I continued, motioning for him to go away. He took the hint as I opened my mouth to say three. I dropped my wand and sighed in relief. "Harry, go on upstairs," I told him, patting him on the back. "I'll see you in the morning."

"Thanks," he replied and scurried away. I hurried upstairs and got ready for bed. I heard my dormmates coming up the stairs, calling my name so I turned and jumped into bed. I hastily pulled the curtains closed just as they came into the room.

"Black?" Angie called softly, moving closer to my bed. "Oh, she's already asleep. I was just gonna congratulate her," she said, sounding a bit disappointed as she moved across the room.

I stayed there for a while, awake long after my dormmates had fallen asleep. I dreaded tomorrow morning. I dreaded the whispers that would follow Harry and I. Something didn't sit right about this. Not one tiny bit.

FIRST TASK

Harry and I walked down to meet with the other champions in silence. Both of us were so nervous we didn't really know what to say or do. We'd both been owling Dad (Sirius) and I'd owled my cousin Tonks several times (who I've been staying with since Dad was sent to Azkaban). Despite both of them wanting to help, they hadn't found a way to help us past the dragons.

However, Harry and I knew a way. When I go out, I'm going to try and transfigure myself into something smaller to avoid the dragon, get the egg, and get out of the way. Hermione, Harry, the twins, and myself had all taken to the library to help me figure out the best way to successfully transfigure myself for the task.

We stepped inside the tent, ignoring the glares of Madam Maxine and Karkaroff. Cedric smiled politely and started pacing again. Come to think of it, Fleur and Krum were pacing too. So it wasn't just us that were stressed about this.

Ludo Bagman and Barty Crouch entered the tent, one looking extremely happy and the other extremely miserable. Bagman ran through what would be happening and how we were to pick our dragons.

Fleur reached in and pulled out a tiny dragon with the number three on it. She gave a nervous sigh and returned to her Headmistress. Krum was next, pulling out a dragon with the number 2, followed by Cedric who got number 1. I hesitantly reached in and pulled out the number five. My heart sank and Harry drew the fourth one, the last option in the bag.

Bagman gave a whole speech that I didn't listen to and the task began.

Harry and I kept each other from going completely insane while we waited for our turn. But as soon as Harry left, I had no one but myself. The thought terrified me. I thought of Tonks and how she was always so brave. Also of how she could change herself into anything she wanted...
