“No, Betty, please wait.”
“What?” she sounded exasperated, “What could you possibly say right now that will make any of this okay?”
“I love you.”
Jughead couldn’t believe his ears. Was he serious? What the hell?
“No, you don’t. You might be in love with the idea of being with me like I was before with you, but you don’t love me.”
“But I do.”
“Where is any of this coming from? Like what made you wake up this morning and think ‘Hmm, how many relationships can I ruin today?’”
“I’m not trying to ruin anything, I’m trying to make us happen, just like you’ve always wanted, just like it was always supposed to be.”
Jughead wanted to kick the door down, but he settled for clenching his fists even tighter.
“You’re not yourself, so I’m going to go before you say anything else you might regret later. I don’t know if you’re high on jingle-jangle or something right now, but you’re not the Archie I know.”
There was a moment of silence and Jughead wondered if maybe now was a good time to scurry back to the student lounge before he was discovered. Then he heard Betty yell,
“What the hell is wrong with you? I’m with Jughead, get that through your thick skull! Don’t you dare ask me to hide this from him, I’m leaving to tell him right now! Come talk to me after you’ve regained your senses, talked to Veronica and learned that it’s wrong to kiss your best friend’s girlfriend!”
Jughead’s blood boiled as he sprinted back to the student lounge, grabbed his book, and tried his hardest not to murder Archie with his eyes when he ran after Betty who had just entered the lounge.
“Don’t believe whatever she’s about to tell you, Jug, she’s lying,” Archie panted.
“You’ve got to be fucking kidding me. Jug, let’s go, I have to talk to you.” Jughead nodded, ignoring Archie, and the two walked out into the parking lot.
“Listen, I want to be completely honest with you-” Betty started.
“Then let me be completely honest with you first,” Jughead cut her off, “I heard everything. I’m sorry for eavesdropping and I know it was wrong, but he had a weird look on his face and I just had to know what he was telling you and I’m sorry, and I should have trusted you, and can I please go punch him in his stupid face?”
“You heard everything?”
“Yeah.”
“Then I guess you also heard me say-”
“Yes, I heard you reject him, and I hope you know how much that means to me. I know what I said that night at my birthday party hurt you, and I’m so sorry for ever thinking that.”
“Well, yeah, that’s fine, but I meant you heard the other thing.” Betty looked down at her feet. Jughead was confused. And then he got it. She was talking about the L-word.
“Yes, I did.”
“I’m sorry if it scared you away or anything, or if you think I’m moving too fast, and of course you’re under no obligation to say it, and I’m sorry you had to hear it that way, but,” Betty took a deep breath, “I did mean it, I think I l-love you.” Her heart pounded in her chest as she waited to hear his reaction. He smiled.
“I think I love you too, Betty.”
She smiled back at him and they shared a kiss.
“So, are you going to tell Veronica? That he, you know?”
“If he doesn’t, then yeah, but I’m still hoping he’ll come to his senses and tell her himself so they can work it out. Archie’s clearly got some stuff going on, but I know Veronica really likes him and I still want them to be happy. Thank you for being so calm about this, by the way. I kind of expected you to go off on him.”
“Do you want me to? Because I seriously wouldn’t be opposed to the idea I mean, seriously, you don’t kiss someone else’s girlfriend.”
“Yeah, I can’t believe he did that! That’s definitely against the bro-code or whatever.”
“And I can’t believe you just said the words ‘bro-code or whatever,’” Jughead laughed. Betty giggled too but then got back to business.
“But no, please don’t. He’s your best friend, and I’m sure you guys can work it out.”
“We’ll see.”
“I don’t want this to break up our group.”
“Me neither, and thank you for telling me about it.”
“I didn’t,” Betty rolled her eyes, “You already knew.”
“But you would’ve told me, even if I hadn’t overheard.”
“Of course, Jug, I think trust is very important in a successful relationship.”
“I agree.”
They kissed and that was that.
