Nova Burke

I STOOD IN front of the Ocean Springs University gates, bag slung on my shoulder and ID card in hand. I tapped the card on the scanner, walking through the gate. In the distance, I hear a voice call out my name.

"Nova! Over here!" Amelia, my best friend shouts. I smiled, walking towards her.

She grabbed my arm, dragging me towards the familiar glass doors of the Fresh from the Bean coffee shop. She walks up to the counter, ordering our usual drinks. I find an empty table, sitting down, opening my bag, and taking out my laptop. A few minutes later, Amelia sits in front of me, placing my cold brew on the table.

"Did you finish that essay Mr. Lee assigned?" Amelia asked, sipping her iced coffee.

"Yeah, I sent it last night." I stirred my coffee with my straw, sipping it slowly.

"Lucky you, I still have to write 2 paragraphs." Lia sighed, taking her laptop out of her bag.

I hummed in response, typing a few words. We sat in silence, typing our unfinished assignments. I check the time. 9:08am. Shit, I'm going to be late to my 9:15 class. I chug the rest of my cold brew down, slamming my laptop shut and shoving it into my bag. I mumble a goodbye to Lia, exiting Fresh from the Bean.

Speed walking to the lecture hall, where my only class of the day was held. Settling down in a seat in the second row. Taking my laptop out of my bag. I looked at my watch. 9:14am. One minute left.

The rest of the students sat down as the clock struck 9:15. Professor Johnson stood up, beginning his two-hour lecture on Polymers.

I looked at my watch. 11:15am. I put my notebook and pencil case back in my bag, as Professor Johnson dismissed the class. I got up and out of the classroom, my stomach growling quietly. Walking back to my car in peace, thinking of what I should eat for lunch. Taking my phone out of my pocket, I texted Lia.

Hey, heading home. Where are you?

Lia replies almost instantly.

Home already, I'm coming over tonight, ok?

I replied with an ok, shoving my phone into my pocket. What felt like a brick wall walked into me, spilling soda on my jacket. Wait, it wasn't a wall, it was a guy, a very buff and tattooed guy.

"Jesus Christ dude! Watch where you're going!" I yelled at the mystery guy, taking some tissues out of my bag and wiping the sugary liquid off of my jacket.

"Me? You were the one who bumped into me!" He yelled back.

"I did not! You were the one who bumped into me." I snapped at him, jabbing my finger into his chest.

"Whatever." He mumbled, walking past me, without any apology. "Asshole." I grumbled, continuing my walk back to my car.

As I reached my car, I fumbled with my keys, unlocking my car, and getting inside. I huffed, peeling my sticky jacket off and throwing it onto the passenger side seat. I reached into the back seat, looking for my hoodie. I grabbed it, sliding it over my head. I turned the car on, and headed back home.
